Well, I was 17 in the 70s and it coulda been worse. We had a lot more mom 'n pop music stores, as well as bookstores and stereo shops, which is what we prided ourselves in. Always looking for the new component. We obviously didn't have PCs, et al., in those days but believe me, we would've figured it out.
The sound of the Rhodes reflects a fairly particular set of real feelings, and to me it's 'beauty of quiet moments' much of the time-- a pensive, reflective sound which has joy and melancholy in the same breath. It can do other things but that's the part of it we hear in stuff like this video. The '60s into the '80s had a lot of optimism and depression and the Rhodes can speak vividly of these things.
The warmth of this gem is simply incredible. Paired with that high end chime and a soulful player who can make this thing sing and you've got a masterpiece. ✨

I must have heard people playing Rhodes so many times but so few people could play it this gentle, jazzy, mysterious way. And this video made me realize THIS was the instrument. I bought myself a Mark I for my 30th birthday. Thank you so much for this video!
The class of that instrument, and your capacity for playing it, are evenly matched. Or as it says in the bible... "Equally Yoked". Very smooth playing and the crown jewel of keyboard instruments.
As a keys player, i didn't realize how much i need one of these in my studio right now. Wow, i thought the MK II was the Holy Grail but goodness... Speechless. Calling my dealer now. Thank you for opening my eyes and ears. I have chills. Salute!
Idk, Fender makes 20 versions of the Telecaster, 30 Stratocasters, countless reissued amps but they can’t bother reissuing perhaps their greatest instrument ever? Samples just don’t sound like the real thing and the Rhodes sounds incredible. 👍👍🪗
True, but it’s also possible they no longer own the rights to manufacture it again and don’t feel cutting a new deal is cost-effective. It’s probably cheaper to just license the sampler sound to Roland or Yamaha and let them integrate it into their keyboards.
Fender doesn't own the rights anymore, they sold to Roland in the 80s, and Harold Rhodes got the company back in the mid-90s I think? They made the mark 7 in 2010ish, didn't do much after that. I know Vintage Vibe makes a Rhodes-style electromechanical tine piano, but I think they might be the only game in town at this point.

Gorgeous! Bob James' theme from Taxi is the quintessential Rhodes tune for me
Now I wanna buy a Rhodes and a J3PO
You know you can get the same sound (& more) with Spectrasonic's Keyscape, even cheaper?
is J3PO included?
@@rahard Hmmmm, never heard of that one, what is it?
@@knuteskild that's the guy who owns this youtube channel (the one playing the rhodes). it's juts a joke. ha ha ha.
@@rahard Mohæhæææ! You got me there, hilarious!! :-) (If you (we) could get Keyscape, with him, that would be the purchase of the century...)
That video pushed me to buy my Rhodes really. Not only this of course. I've known a track by Vangelis called Reve for many years but had no idea what the instrument was. I must have heard people playing Rhodes so many times but so few people could play it this gentle, jazzy, mysterious way. And this video made me realize THIS was the instrument. I bought myself a Mark I for my 30th birthday. Thank you so much for this video!
Que lindo cuanta nostalgia por ese intrumento tan maravilloso y mas cuando esta bien tocado con tremendo concepto exitos
This is my favorite keyboard sound ever. It cant never be replaced or totally duplicated
what a journey, this is such an impressive instrument
Like wading through the clouds on a mildly sunny day with some breeze.
The class of that instrument, and your capacity for playing it, are evenly matched. Or as it says in the bible... "Equally Yoked".
Very smooth playing and the crown jewel of keyboard instruments.
Exactly this. These videos make me want to buy a rhodes (or at least keyscape lol) but with my current abilities I could never make it sound this good
As a keys player, i didn't realize how much i need one of these in my studio right now. Wow, i thought the MK II was the Holy Grail but goodness... Speechless. Calling my dealer now. Thank you for opening my eyes and ears. I have chills. Salute!
Lovely and my favorite instrument... I'm sure it was George Duke (RIP) playing the Rhodes MK1 that was the trigger for me to love this sound.
Reminds me of so many film and TV show soundtracks from the 70s. Just beautiful and definitely takes you back to those times.
Really great sound vibes!!!!!!
Beautiful! Those old Rhodes make a classic sound.
There is a company that builds something very similar , problem is the price.
what about that rhodes 7? i am sure there is that video from NAMM '10 appearing on the side somewhere. pretty hot, ngl.
You should check out Vintage Vibe's 73 piano.
Fender doesn't own the rights anymore, they sold to Roland in the 80s, and Harold Rhodes got the company back in the mid-90s I think? They made the mark 7 in 2010ish, didn't do much after that. I know Vintage Vibe makes a Rhodes-style electromechanical tine piano, but I think they might be the only game in town at this point.
beautiful, nostalgic and very heart warming, sends me back to my childhood. thanks man
it's a loooooong way before the digital guys reach that quality of sound !
This is one of my favorite videos on youtube
this video is now for some reason one of my only coping mechanisms against sh..(self harm). So thank you for your amazing work on this music, and thank you for uploading. This really calms me down, and i truly appriceate that some thing for once can do the wonders this video does. So thank you again. And just know that you're helping a suffering soul out here. Keep it up.
I’ve dealt with self-harm too brother; praying for you 🙏
@@CollinMacQuarrie thank you:)
Me too right now. Hope you will be fine soon
I think what sets people like this apart from the average musically gifted person is not the technique (I can just about play this now after transcribing) but the creativity and musical intelligence deployed “off the cuff”. Just brilliant.
So this is the instrument that has the epic timbre.
My favourite instrument and beautifully played. It brings one back to a more peaceful time.
