all these years later and the jury is still out as to how much of this fantastic collaboration was improvised. two extremely peak outside artists perfecting their craft. a+ album for sure
thats what happens when you're a bit baked and you find a band like this. Partly makes me want to give up music and get a job delivering milk, and partly makes me feel glad to be alive.
I was at this show. This project called themselves "Octis" and they opened for The Advantage and Hella. I wasn't sure how I felt about Octis, but the rest of the show was amazing. Spencer and Zach worked their asses off that night.
pure insanity. this isn't that they can both just play as fast as possible, it's that they both can play as fast as possible and actually stay together and completely change structures of the song for 10 entire minutes.
I think I have heard of him; that he is a big fan of Christian Vander of Magma. You should check him out, and some other drummers like Chris Cutler, Milford Graves, Andrew Cyrille, Drumbo (with Captain Beefheart and others). All amazing, and very unpredictable. Drummers should be able to keep time, but don't have to.
Kevin, Andrew Cyrille's best work was when he was drummer for Cecil Taylor--this was from roughly 1966-1975. He also put out an amazing solo drum record in 1970 or so on the Actuel/Byg record label called "What About?" Other great drummers are Jon Hiseman (esp. early Colosseum), Robert Wyatt, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Ed Blackwell (played with Ornette Coleman).
@rajtherat I also saw him last Tuesday at Death By Audio. These two guys are pretty much my two favorite musicians right now. If you pay close enough attention it's obvious that these two are really jamming, they are really playing off of each other and working together. It is improvised, but it's not just random noise.
Yeah it was interesting for me because I spent a large portion of the video wondering if it was improv or not haha, I mean, at least the synchronized accented attacks when Mick plays the 6th string seem to be sort of arranged...I agree they are insane musicians but that reaction time would be impossible hahah I still have my doubts though, it's mindblowing
freaking sweet video, i couldnt recognize the song from Shred Earthship and at 1st i thought it was off the Volume 2 sessions, but after reading around i found out that this was completely improvised....left me w/out words
all those poeple talkin shit on hella, should listen more colesely, they never lose time the drummer alaways get his notes clean and so does the guitarrist, i mean nowadays youre considered a great guitarriost and agreat drummer if youre a rusty repolica of malmsteen or gene hoglan, this guys are bringin something new to the table did anegded smenfold did thta, i dont think so
@BTMandy1 i was just messin with you. your right- when i play like that im beet afterward.. but i have lost a lot of endurance since i started 13 years ago. i use to play super crazy and now im more laid back- still funky but...u know
That is a fair point. I wasn't taking into account the fact that it's a low quality recording. My friend is obsessive with Hill, so like I said, I'll give it a listen and I'll get back to you, but I'm really not getting my hopes up for it. Also just found out he did a gig with Patton. Nice.
I don't understand why people call Zach Hill a "hack." Even if you don't think this kind of music takes no talent to play, hes already proved himself perfectly able to play in your standard 4/4 steady tempo rock stuff, and he can play it better then most drummers. He can play the normal stuff, and the completely insane stuff that pushes the limits.
i wonder if people watching this understand that this is a written song and he will play it again exactly the same way if that is what he wishes. i like music that is too complicated for me to understand
"OMGITSALLJUSTRANDOMNOISENOTALENT!!!!" Well, thats kind of the point of noise-rock and noise-metal, minus the "no talent" part. Why can't people except that many people, such as me, enjoy this kind of music? And yes, it is music. Its art. Sound is music.
What would be the point of "defending" music or convincing someone to listen to particular music? You like a song or you don't. You listen or you don't. It would seem an odd pursuit to attempt to debate someone into appreciating a particular piece of music. I like this, so I listen. Does it need to be more complicated than that?
it's obviously composed. he hits the crashes in time with barr's big (relatively) sustained low notes, again and again. and eye contact doesn't seem to be happening at all. two contemporary greats, firing on all cylinders.
music is whatever someone plays. if it has a beginning and has an ending, it is music. this is the way music works. it is simpler to say you don't like. modern music is always difficult to except. a one time rock music was thought to be "fucking garbage". i'm not trying to rag on you my friend. if you play music, then i feel you should have an open mind. music is bigger than a note or an amp. if not, then relax and listen to some pantera.
@cgheezey1 i dont think what zach hill is doing is completely random shit...using his right foot that fast while doing all that other shit requires a crazy amount of coordination. I saw him last tuesday and he broke is low tuned tom so he had to move his foot extra fast...it was pretty insane lol
Lol.... sort of. I'd say that you either believe there is something "to get" (and get it) or you think its a bunch of balogna. When I saw this live, it was fun to watch... but it grew monotonous after a while.
Barr and Hill are amazing to me. Add bass player that fits, go a little more melodic could reach more people. Reaction think feel do. Oh I do play a little bass..
as much as singerdave2001 is wrong, at the same time he does bring good points. I think the reason Hella got its claim to fame is due to the fact that Hella actually is melodic, where as this just sounds like a lot of noise, but we all truly know this is talented out of our fucking minds. But yeah, This isn't listening music, this is thinking music. I can't really make it through this video without cringing.
ps. not hatin on these guys, they are both brilliant, just to the un-trained ear it sounds like noise, they do play the genra of "noise rock" haha, what can u expect?
i like zach hill actually he's my favorite drummer nowadays, but i really don't like this kind of think in team sleep he does an amazing work very beautiful drumming, but there are a lot of points of view peace :D
The thing that makes listening to this twice as impressive is knowing that this song is composed and not improvised.
all these years later and the jury is still out as to how much of this fantastic collaboration was improvised. two extremely peak outside artists perfecting their craft. a+ album for sure
If highly evolved humans came back thousands of years to our time to play a metal show, this is what they would play.
thats what happens when you're a bit baked and you find a band like this. Partly makes me want to give up music and get a job delivering milk, and partly makes me feel glad to be alive.

it's not stupid at all. these are two incredibly talented, sophisticated musicians who, in my opinion, are leagues ahead of slayer and their ilk.
This is amazing; I have never heard Mick Barr or the drummer before. I will keep on checking them out. This is very organized.
pure insanity. this isn't that they can both just play as fast as possible, it's that they both can play as fast as possible and actually stay together and completely change structures of the song for 10 entire minutes.

This video is awesome.

Haha. I certainly would, I'm listening to it right now. I love it.
pure awesome x infinity = this
Its cool that nobody likes this. I wouldnt expect the average person to be able to decipher a wall of sound.
I like it.
This is the most intense and insane thing I've ever seen.
Amazing. The stick flying out his hand at 5:36
this is so awesome!
I don't remember counting and comparing notes. But for all intensive purposes, it is virtually the same.
@BTMandy1 i was just messin with you. your right- when i play like that im beet afterward.. but i have lost a lot of endurance since i started 13 years ago. i use to play super crazy and now im more laid back- still funky but...u know

At least compared to Drone, most people can't comment this going, "this is easy, anyone could do this"
utter destruction... wish I could have been there
this shit is mad avant-garde. that's a good thing though
I don't understand why people call Zach Hill a "hack." @rajtherat mick barr defines shredding
Confusion is sex, remember.
I absolutleeey loooooooooooove this!
shred earthship is the shit! go buy it!
i wonder if people watching this understand that this is a written song and he will play it again exactly the same way if that is what he wishes. i like music that is too complicated for me to understand
My arms and fingers are tired just from watching this
The drummer plays in Hella. Check them out!
And people say Psyopus sounds random. It's a good thing.
love the destroyed cymbal
therapy
amen
"OMGITSALLJUSTRANDOMNOISENOTALENT!!!!"
Well, thats kind of the point of noise-rock and noise-metal, minus the "no talent" part. Why can't people except that many people, such as me, enjoy this kind of music? And yes, it is music. Its art. Sound is music.
i don't think i'll continue playing drums...
Hah! Glad you stuck with it lol! You are a beast!
Needs Weasel Walters on bass. You can argue but but you'll be wrong...
Well said.
Yeah! I heard em' all except Andrew Cyrille. Who does he play with?
Hey, I made up this song in 89. He stole it from me!!!! Copyright infringement!!!!
What would be the point of "defending" music or convincing someone to listen to particular music? You like a song or you don't. You listen or you don't. It would seem an odd pursuit to attempt to debate someone into appreciating a particular piece of music.

Two guys have a seizure on their instruments..brilliant.
LMAO...finally someone with a sense of humor!
it's obviously composed. he hits the crashes in time with barr's big (relatively) sustained low notes, again and again. and eye contact doesn't seem to be happening at all. two contemporary greats, firing on all cylinders.
what the fuck is this crazy cymbal wizardry at 3:03
@rajtherat and what do call what zach hill is doing?
Right on.
music is whatever someone plays. if it has a beginning and has an ending, it is music. this is the way music works. it is simpler to say you don't like. modern music is always difficult to except. a one time rock music was thought to be "fucking garbage". i'm not trying to rag on you my friend. if you play music, then i feel you should have an open mind. music is bigger than a note or an amp. if not, then relax and listen to some pantera.
Yeah, I have the album.
I'm so confused. And I'm the one who analyzes Blotted Science in my free time.
Sticks & Strings - drumHeads aNd Nails!!
Im going to music trader right now.
What's the album's title?
Could you honestly remember if he played the exact same notes a second time? Is there even an official recorded version?
Still fuckin insane
2:44 he stikes a few chords. What more could you ask for?
Stop thinking so much about it and start feeling.
Is it music or noise ?
It's like... A train. Trying to outdo... another train.
I thought the ginger guy in the audience's head was a kick drum pillow
this is like watching a video of 5 year olds playing music that is sped up
@MrSabbath66 listen to the jimmy agren band....that is a perfect example of how something so technical can be groovy as hell!
agreed.
FOREVER ALONE
fuckin awesome
Shred Earthship
correct
Ah, so is this nerve mathematics? There's no song called "Shred Earthship".
Dark Sea Clouds/Shaking Basketweaver is probably the sickest song ever.
Some musicians inspire me to practice more and be better. Zach Hill just makes me want to quit.
i wonder if he could play some Jazz Waltz?
Preemptive: Yes, technically it is music. I know, i listen to weirder stuff, but usually not with the actual intent to listen.
FUCKIN AWESOME
What song is this?
@ Tristanlom Noisy music :D
lmfao , love how you can see another guy with his crappy camera (who provides the other, lower quality recording of this show on youtube)
these guys know how to rip shreds :D fanspastic !
Is it me or does Zach look like Murderface from Metalocalypse in this video?
Creo que mi definición de música debe cambiar.
@cgheezey1 i dont think what zach hill is doing is completely random shit...using his right foot that fast while doing all that other shit requires a crazy amount of coordination. I saw him last tuesday and he broke is low tuned tom so he had to move his foot extra fast...it was pretty insane lol

Guitar/shred chops, that shit is wicked. But I'd rather listen to feedback than ENDURE listening to this.
Yeah, but can they play fast? :-D
wait isint that what its all about get it straight
Are you sure? Where did you get these facts? Do you know zach?
cool :D
Yeah, They must use Viagra to keep it up so long!
Is this Royal Blood?
It makes me feel like turd butt.
you can't make that shit up!
Im sorry, i as under the impression those two men on stage with instruments were going to music.
Не ну тут Миша Барр таки по-пажилому отжигает с отбитым барабаннером, зачётный дует!
да чувачок
Haha, good old Shred Earthship. This band requires drugs or speeding down the highway at 110mph to understand. Or both.
Well soooorry...
Barr and Hill are amazing to me. Add bass player that fits, go a little more melodic could reach more people. Reaction think feel do. Oh I do play a little bass..
haha this is pretty cool but i like his pairing with carson more
as much as singerdave2001 is wrong, at the same time he does bring good points. Ladies and gentlemen...talent has left the building!
What building? Your house?
ps. not hatin on these guys,
they are both brilliant,
just to the un-trained ear it sounds like noise,
they do play the genra of "noise rock" haha,
what can u expect?
i like zach hill actually he's my favorite drummer nowadays, but i really don't like this kind of think in team sleep he does an amazing work very beautiful drumming, but there are a lot of points of view peace :D
