16:49 The man besides him is the true disney legend. Mad respect for Howard! Disney always had "I want" songs since Snow White but only after The Little Mermaid and "Part of Your World" that it has been the formula ever since, thanks to Howard Ashman. The little mermaid, beauty and the beast and Aladdin's songs was written by Howard Ashman. Alan Menken is the one who composed the music. It's a shame that you're explaining about disney renaissance but you dont even mention Howard. Sadly that just few of disney fans that recognized and talked about him. He was literally the reason why disney is still exist now. Howard Ashman is a legendary lyricist who made Disney rises from its downfall and started the renaissance era of Disney, who recently returned from his huge career in musical broadway theater world that time. He is the one who directing Jodi Benson to sing Part of Your World. We all know that the original Part of Your World will always be the best "I Want" song in the entire disney universe. Not just because the nostalgia vibe but also Jodi Benson was really well and carefully directed by Howard Ashman, that even her breaths, stress and pause on each syllable are really well and gently cared for. When he directed Jodi, he always said "don't focus to the song, now you're telling a story". Howard wasn't focusing of the song and what makes the song sounds good or what makes it a song but how it tells a story. That's why there are many imperfections in the song, because it's the main part of it. An important part of maintaining that type of reserved passion is also that Part of Your World does not change key. In the worlds of pop music and musical theater finishing off with a key change is a helpful tool for bringing songs to a heightened emotional level and when covering Part of Your World, some people have done exactly that but I don't really think that a key change is necessary because that wasn't the intent of the songwriters. Howard said that intensity is better than enormous in this song. Howard said that intensity is better than enormous in this song. In fact I think that's staying in the same key the whole time is what makes it work so well having it push and pull and eventually bring Ariel back down to where she started tells a story effectively it even ends with the same motif it began with showing the audience the life that she wants but then going back to the life that she has. You can know that Howard Ashman was a great lyricist that he can even tell a story from a song. He also made the song dynamically switching from singing to talking and vice versa but the transition between them is still unnoticeable. And it didn't happen once, literally he directed every songs in those 3 films. If you really search on youtube, there are many videos that show behind the scene of the songs making. Like in beauty and the beast, he directed Paige O'Hara the same way too. Just search "Howard Ashman demo" on youtube, you can see how may songs he sung really containts much emotion than current disney songs.
Also this is how Jodi's said to him
    ruclips.net/video/itaEZeJoqK0/видео.html
Hard to believe that this beautiful song, Part of Your World, was almost cut from the movie. Jeffrey Katzenberg hated it and thought that it not only slowed down the movie but was boring. Howard fought hard to convince Katzenberg that this song belonged in the movie. And I'm glad he did. Disney renaissance is mostly known by their songs. Before the little mermaid project, Howard gathered the whole disney crew for a meeting. He tell about broadway history to all the crew and they all were impressed at him. Fun fact: Howard did much more than write the songs on this movie, he also brought on board Jodi Benson, directed her during this song, changed an English butler crab named Clarence to be a Jamaican crab named Sebastian, wrote the dialog in the scene where Triton gives Ariel her legs, and also produced the movie with John Musker.
After The Little Mermaid released and became a biggest success in box office, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken was going to make movie called Aladdin. They've come up with several of ideas and musical numbers but Jeffrey Katzenberg then dragging them to a new project, Beauty and The Beast. Unfortunately, Ashman passed away 6 month before beauty and the beast was released and that movie was dedicated to him that even in the credit scene you can see that they gaved him credit to honor him because of how important he was. After beauty and the beast released, Jeffrey then took away all of Ashman's idea and script, almost 99% of them. But sadly some of the songs were removed in the final film
He is the one who bring the new element broadway musical to the movie. This is the bright spot where everyone started to watching to animated movies again, previously no one was at all interested in animated movies. That's why every single disney movie now has a song in it. Disney keep using this formula until now (but not as effective as in the renaissance) because it's Howard's legacy. You can tell how they respect Ashman that even in Beauty and The Beast credit scene, there's a statement to honor him
    "To our friend, Howard,
who gave a mermaid her voice
    and a beast his soul,
    we will be forever grateful."
    Howard Ashman
    1950-1991
No wonder why The Little Mermaid be the first disney animated classic who get an oscar nomination. Also Beauty and the Beast is Disney's 30th animated motion picture, a dedication to Howard Ashman before he had passed away and the only classic movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Picture.
He was the one who brought “I Want” song to another level! I Want song is literally every disney movies now. "In almost every musical ever written... the leading lady usually sits down on something... and sings about what she wants in life, and the audience falls in love with her and roots for her to get for the rest of the night." - Howard Ashman.
He and his partner, Alan Menken, is the greatest duo that anyone have ever recognized in animated movie history. Also gain respect to Alan Menken, The little mermaid is actually his first score yet he can bring the magic with that scores. You can said that Part of Your World orchestra in the opening scene is the best choir you have ever seen and heard.
Have you ever heard about the quote
"There are three kinds of pianists: Jewish pianists, homosexual pianists, and bad pianists."
    -Vladimir Horowitz
That quote actually referring to Ashman because he was Jewish and gay but still doesnt changed the fact that he really put his care and love the the movies
It's hard not to hear the parallels to his own life. To be a gay man in that day and age (and to be literally dying of AIDS) and to wrestle with that kind of longing, that kind of loneliness, that kind of confusion, that kind of self-hatred... The message comes loud and clear even when it's not sung by a mermaid. Tremendous achievement, brilliant man. RIP.
I can't imagine how much more greater and better Disney would have been doing today if this great man was still alive. It hurts to actually wonder.

Every time I watch The Rescuers Down Under, my mom reminds me that my brother and I used to watch it every single day when we were little, so often that she can still recognize the sound of the film from the other side of the house. I have no recollection of doing this, but I can see why, with its gorgeous animation and talking animal characters, that it would appeal to a very young child.

Leaving Lilo and Stich, the Franchise, to Die, was one of the
      biggest Mistakes they ever made.

The lyricist Howard Ashman and his music partner Menken were a huge part of the music quality that I believe drove the beginnings of renaissance. They were from broadway, famously having written the music for Little Shop of Horrors. Ashman wrote all the lyrics for Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast and Aladdin. After he sadly died from AIDS in 1991, the lyrical quality of the music in later films suffered. Menken’s contribution still held up a high standard but there was an edge that was missing, which is why those first 3 films stand apart.

I wouldn't necessarily say "The Emperor's New Groove" ended the Disney Renaissance. "Tarzan" is generally considered the last renaissance movie, and it breaks form by not having any characters sing. RUclipsr Sideways argued that this is why the renaissance ended.
The first post-renaissance (or experimental) movies were "Fantasia 2000" and "Dinosaur." "Emperor's New Groove" was only the third in this series of films, so I wouldn't place any real blame on it for the end of the renaissance.

13:28-13:42 - And Couldn't agreed with you more ever since Wreck-It Ralph and ESPECIALLY Frozen, Disney has been shoehorning the Plot-Twist villain trope in EVERY Animated film these days where it just becomes repetitive, and overdone and you can thank Pixar's influence (mainly John Lasseter) for making Disney Animation Studios utilizing this in their films these last 6 years. Sometimes it works (e.g. King Candy) other times it becomes TOO obvious and cliched (e.g. Hans, Callaghan). 😑
I'm Hopeful, that future Disney animated films from Walt Disney Animation Studios will bring back the classic Disney villain from the Renaissance era, cause we haven't had a classic Disney villain since Dr. Facilier and Mother Gothel.
Thank you so much. Hope you do one on the post-renaissance and the Disney Revival era soon. #DisneyRenaissance

I firmly believe that Howard Ashman and Alan Menken were just as responsible for Mermaid’s success than anyone else. Ashman, in particular, pushed very hard for his songs to be pushed to the forefront. He wasn’t just the songwriter. He was very involved in the creative process. Let’s face it, The Little Mermaid would be nothing without its songs. It’s so sad that Ashman passed away before he could see Beauty and the Beast to its completion. I wonder what the Renaissance would have sounded like had he lived. Still, we have Alan Menken who is an absolute treasure and has created some of the most iconic melodies put to screen. Goodness, they were a great duo. RIP, Howard Ashman 💕💕💕

I enjoyed this but you forgot to mention the great Howard Ashman and how important he was in setting the tone at the beginning of the Renaissance.
He was the original lyricist, book writer and partner of Alan Mencken for Little Shop of Horrors, both Broadway musical and movie. When they came to work for Disney he rescued the floundering (pun intended) production of Little Mermaid and become a driving creative force for pairing of animation and broadway style musical. He led story meetings and brought in voice actors with broadway vocal abilities who were also great character actors. He’s the one who chose to model Ursula after the drag queen Divine. He instilled many of the common tropes like the “I want” songs which became iconic in so many movies. He worked on Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and contributed to Aladdin before he died tragically young from AIDS.
I also believe that he was responsible for bringing back to life the dying embers of the musical as a popular genre which had been in its own dark ages.

In a fix, in a bind,
      Call on us anytime,
      We'll appear from nowhere,
      Mighty are we!
I'll always know how to spell "rescue" til the day I die. One of the very first films that I ever saw in the theater was the re-release of "The Rescuers" back in the 1980s. I still think "The Rescuers Down Under" is better than "The Lion King."

      Lilo and Stitch...
Leaving Lilo and Stich, the Franchise, to Die, was one of the
      biggest Mistakes they ever made.
That's an objective fact, which you would know as such if you knew enough about the subject.
But whatever, not being educated about this one thing aint a sin, i guess... or maybe it is, but
      that's not the point.
THE POINT IS: This Franchise hadnt tired itself out, at all. So it should be Revived for Real.

  • @Savannah_Simpson

Seriously NO mention of Howard Ashman. Like at all? He WAS the Disney Renaissance. You guys are usually so on point. He was the one that conceived of The Little Mermaid as a Broadway style musical, came up with many of the tropes that would be popular in the Renaissance movies, and even helped with tweaking some of the scenes ( The original draft of Aladdin was basically HIS story, until they had to do some major rewriting after his death). And that’s all with considering his amazing lyric writing. Without him and Menken. There would absolutely have not been a Disney Renaissance.

I think I've watched the 2 hour behind the scenes of Aladdin more than the movie itself. I love it, and want just the behind the scenes of all the Renaissance films in a collection for easy access. For example: the animators used the Arabic-style lines to draw everything. Jasmine's animator used a school picture of his sister as inspiration and she sewed herself and her kids themed costumes that Halloween, herself as the original Jasmine.

Most of the popular movies since 1977 have been written by one ghostwriter. His birthday is Nov.16, 1976 and he was A child prodigy.
He wrote songs, TV series, movies, books, comics and videogame concepts Ect.
There were four more Harry Potter books planned but certain goals had not been met so the writer postponed them indefinitely.
The first movie, videogame and Fantastic Beasts U.S. release dates are all on Nov.16!
Back to the Future and Harry Potter are also linked in various ways. Yada...yada...yada...

    Disney theory:
What if the new animated movies by Disney coming out are loose reimaginings of each of the Disney Renaissance movies? Hear me out. The most obvious one would be Moana. It's definitely a reimagining of Hercules if this theory is correct. They are both set in mythology, with a demigod character that is extremely strong, and both have the very similar "How far I'll go/Go the Distance" songs (great mashup of the two: ruclips.net/video/7R2DwvuSxdw/видео.html ). Next would be Big Hero 6. This may be a stretch to some but I think it is The Lion King. Both main characters have a close relative who is killed by a seeming accident that ends up actually being plotted by the main villain. They both make a team of friends that aren't used to being heroes in order to take him down at the end. Lastly, Zootopia would probably be Mulan. Both have a strong female lead character who defies social rules in order to pursue the path they want to and fight using their own equally powerful but different skills. I have no idea which one Frozen would be lol. Can y'all think of any others? Do you have any critiques of this theory? Comment and let me know!

I am so glad you made this video!!!!! Thank you for mentioning the importance of Don Bluth and Pre-Disney-Pixar's rolls in this era. I find it ironic that Bluth's last film with Disney was the original "Rescuers," (dark ages) when "Down Under" helped usher in the new era 10ish years later! Loosing big talent, and later gaining new big talent really helped outline the changes of these eras.

Whenever I tell someone what my favorite Disney princess is they always tell me that she’s not a Disney princess!(it’s Nala), I always say she is in the same character slot as the ‘princess’.
It’s kind of like when I tell someone who my favorite Harry Potter character, which is Hedwig, and they always say that Hedwig doesn’t even talk.
