Hey mate…..love love your video. Keep up the great work. Question for you though….aren’t you afraid of types of snakes in your garden? I don’t mind them, but walking or placing your hands into the garden.
Love this! When spring comes, I hope to grow half of the things as cool as what you have grown. I was successful with some grocery store finds but not so much with others like sugar cane and turmeric.
So nice to listen to you! As a psychologist, I really enjoyed your advice to seek help when in need. Thanks for the farming/gardening tips, which I can use in my own farm.
Kia ora Kalem. Ka mau te wehi e hoa. Well done you! How awesome is that gourd lamp. Another nice gourd project is creating Taonga Puoro known as Hue. Taonga Puoro is Maori for musical instruments and Hue is the Maori word for gourd. The dried gourd can be cleaned as you did and then simply saw the top off at the best point to make an instrument sounded by blowing over the hole at the correct angle. Some Hue give an amazingly super deep bass sound and a collection of the right sized Hue can make up a little orchestra. Some tiny Hue are played by blowing over the hole using one nostril while holding the other nostril closed with a finger. The seeds that were removed or tiny pebbles can be put into the Hue to make a shaker. There's an excellent book by Brian Flintoff - 'Taongo Puoro' with more information. By the way, Asian Dogwoods or Cornus kousa have a delicious tropical tasting custard fleshed fruit.
Hello Kalem, I would like to suggest a different kind of video. I thought of a video where you talk to us about the animals you live with. Just kind of who they are and what their routines are.
That was awesome! If you want a bit of variation, try drilling ALMOST through but leaving a thin layer so the light glows and is soft, rather than shining bright. I bought several of these from an incredible artist in Lithuania and this is the first time I actually saw how he does it. HIs designs are very intricate and there's almost as many diffused holes as there are ones he drilled all the way through. Gourds done like this crate such an incredibly magical atmosphere at night. Well done!
@@TheKiwiGrower If you try it, keep the drilled through holes the same size you did here but the partial drill throughs were slightly larger and looks like he had 3 different sizes. I can email you the info to look at what he did if you're interested.
What a beautiful lamp! I love the eucalyptus design and the shadows it throws. I also enjoyed the quick clips from your adorable turkeys and beautiful green garden.
Thunder Gourds! Just heard of em and they are so neat! Can make self s gonna try since here in ky we grew gourds this year and have a lot. They make them out of metal to but they tend be pricey.
I would also paint the inside with white/silver paint for more light. Gold paint will be good too but it will make much warmer light. Ps very nice chanel 👍
Love it, a beautiful piece of art! How about the obvious one, a nice portable water bottle next? Would also be great to see a video sharing your knowledge on how you grow your seedlings one day, as they always look very healthy. I struggle here in NZ using all the main seed raising mixes. Eg how much water - how often, how to harden etc, and Ive tried all the different seed providers too! Eg kings Grow yours, Seths and the standard ones too.
Great idea! Good to hear from you again. I need to share since I've watched your first video sometime ago, I am trying to grow anything home 😆 Literally dig some seeds from my food and trying to raise them. I have a potato plant on my balcony.
Thanks to you, I will be growing bottle gourds next year and possibly dipper gourd as well. I liked the addition of the bamboo Grove in the background. A suggestion for a next video would be a project with your bamboo!
Loving the creative approach with your produce, not only cooking but art too now. The first thing I thought when I saw those gourds was slicing them in rings, so many possibilities for abstract art, sculpture, windchimes or even puzzles and toys. What about painting with natural pigments? I did it once with carrots and beet, it totally rotted, but I bet you could make it work and use exotic natural pigments.
Hi Kalem, thanks for this fascinating video on creating a lamp out of a Bottle Gourd. It was a very creative design that you built that really came to life when it was lite up with the electric bulb. I was wondering how it was all going to come together but I think it came out really great. One thing that really amazes me is that the Bottle Gourd dries out so much on the skin and the seeds as well. Most Gourds would rot and decay and turn to mush and that dries so hard and keeps it's shape. It seems like there was a little smoke escaping from the holes in the darkness so you probably could just keep it on for a short period of time.
Hi Ben, yeah it’s pretty cool that they basically turn to wood. That wasn’t smoke by the way, it was steam from an aromatherapy vaporiser. I just wanted to showcase the lamp with the vapor lighting up cause it looked cool :)
@@TheKiwiGrower Ok, makes sense, glad it was steam from the vaporizer instead of smoke. I was a little confused by the mist as you mentioned the bulb runs cooler.
I use to buy the small gourds in fall put a whole in bottom and set it for decoration then just let them dry completely then let my kids play with them for rattles
Hey Kalem, great to see you in a new video! Fair play to You for speaking about the hardest battle of them all which is mental health issues👏 Glad that you were able to find a right place to get support and therapy❤ And that lamp, wow! It a piece of art, love the eucaliptus design, it creates this magical atmosphere. I got a dried bottle gourd grown by my close one as a gift and for the last few years it was waiting to be used in some creative project. I was planning to make a bird feeder out of it but looking at your project Im thinking the bird feeder might actually turn out to be a lamp after all😂 All the best Kalem, hope to see another video from You soon❤
An entire collection of lamps would be cool. What about using one of the more symmetrical gourds as the base of the lamp? You would then add a shade, or possibly use a second guard for the shade… as always, an excellent video!

You are very talented sir and i really enjoy watching your videos. If you wanted to you could make those lamps and sell them, they are very beautiful. ❤ 🙏
Mate , Gourd me i was thinking that lamp would be plastic and metalic if brought at a big box store that work of art you made is worth more!! the obvious you can make bowling pins, they would make a great stair post, to even just making natural bottles i wonder they store Wine, Gin and Whiskey in barrells for many years i wonder in a small way you could age the drink in these gourd bottles the skys the limit.
Wow, that is so beautiful. I am shocked at how beautiful the lamp turned out. You are very creative and talented. Have you ever made birdhouses or wind chimes with gourds?
That is so cool! Thanks for another great video Kalem! Regarding to the bottle gourds, I got inspired by your last video and growing some from seed at the moment! I'm about to plant them outside this weekend, and was wondering, from your experience, how much sun do they require? Did they get much in the food forest? Just trying to decide where to put them.
Hey, they tend to love as much sun as you can give them! Usually if they don't have enough they'll find their way to a sunnier area with their vines haha

Welcome back! Awesome bottle gourd idea! Maybe I'll give you credit when I do this. 😁 The lights are "gourdgeous".
😂
Gourdeous! And that moment with the goat was precious! I pray that you overcome whatever challenges you're going through.
Wow! the reveal was epic!!!
Now I want to grow my own gourds even more! thanks for sharing
That's a great result. Aboriginal dot art vibes. It's always a treat when you drop a new video 🙏
The lamp looks amazing.
An idea to put the LED light that changes colour in the lamp, for added effect.
Thanks, that would be really cool too :)
Lowe’s sells some RGB LED light bulbs! ;)
Nice work mate. Really love the content - it has 100% inspired me to grow more random things in my garden. :)
That really exceeded my expectations, well done. I wish I had enough property to grow a food forest.
That turned out so beautiful - and I'm sure you'll appreciate it so much more knowing that it came from your very own garden! Cool as.
You can make Tāonga Puoro (traditional Māori instruments) from your gourds (hue) too.
Beautiful

So beautiful creative work, beautiful lampshade
Just the other day I was rewatching your bottle gourd video and deciding I might try and grow some myself in my garden I am setting up
That's so beautiful. I'm impress about that gourd came from your garden. I enjoyed your other video about growing loofahs.
I really enjoyed this and the light turned out fantastic!
the lamp reveal is soo beautiful!!
Beautiful...the light looks like jewels
A stunning project!

Look up Odie’s oil. It’s non toxic and little goes a long way. Love love love Odie’s oil
Thankyou for sharing your experiences and experiments! They are very inspiring.
A wonderful lamp and the best craft project I have seen in ages, brilliant!
Thank you!
Wow awesome idea! Keep up the great work
Love it. Looking that good I'd go crazy making more.
OMG WOW it's incredible!
Nice! It turned out so well! I'm inspired to grown gourds too, although I don't know how well that would work here in Sweden.
What a wonderful project!!!! 👏

That is absolutely gorgeous ❤. Where abouts in NZ are you Kalem?
Thank you :). I’m in north Waikato
Have you created a planting calendar for all the unusual plants you have shown on your channel?
Oh gourd !
Wow. Nice work man! That lamp is very cool ♡
What a beautiful lamp! I wonder if we can grow in Canada or if’s available once all dried? I’d love to make something nice!
This is incredible❤❤
Awesome light
This is genius, I am sure you can create dinner bowls from the same materials.
I can't find gourds in this shape in my country. They usually just elongated and fat coz they're grown for food.
