    You know, your practical advice for flute students and how you discuss practicing and taking care, you should seek a PhD in Flute Pedagogy - and write books. Because you know, I learn a lot from your videos... not just for myself, but how to help friends and students! Thank youuuu. I looking forward to read anything you write in flute pedagogy and 'transpose' to piano pedagogy, really!!

    I am a clarinetist and I learn so much not only about practicing, but so much more about myself and growing my self confidence as a musician and for my own personal growth. Thank you Joanna ♡ I have gone through this for so long, especially now noticing this even more the older I get and the more busy I get. I used to feel like a failure because I wasn't practicing every single day for 5 hours a day, but I love how I am not the only one. I've started doing this like since i only have an attention span for maybe 20-35 minutes and keep a journal of my times. It goes up and down, but ultimately I can only practice an hour every other day (and I mean EVERY 👏 OTHER 👏 DAY!!!). ALSO, I like your brushing teeth analogy as well :). I think I am both, event and time orientated. It really just depends on the day or situation. Long story short, Thank you for showing that I am not alone in this.

    I am definitely more event based! I know if I have a recital coming up, I’ll practice a lot. If It’s summer, then I need to make myself goals or else I won’t practice.

    Oh my goodness!!! I needed this so much. I have such an awful time with actually practicing because I don’t want to have to sit down for an hour because I always felt that I needed to practice for an hour or else it wouldn’t be worth it. This makes so much sense to me and I think I’ll bring it up to my teacher. I’m an oboist by the way. Well...I also play the flute but don’t tell my teacher lol. I really appreciate your content and I hope you enjoy what you do. Thank you!!

    This . . . explains so much. After watching this video I now have something to identify as, an event orientated person! My attention span runs to two extremes in which I either can't focus on anything or I become so focused that nothing can distract me from what I have focused on. There is no in-between, but more often than not I find my thoughts jumping and screaming while I try to focus on something unless it interests me or I can connect it to other things and really think about it and dissect it. This makes practicing for long periods of time extremely hard at times as my only desire in practicing is to improve and learn, without caring about a time limit. Which really is the worst possible combination when you're a self taught flutist.
    This video also helps me understand how my best friend will willingly practice around six hours a day on each of his instruments. Sometimes in intervals and switching days and other times (and most often) multiple ones a day. (Thank the Lord he only plays three)
    In short this video has helped me understand where I need to go forward with my practicing habits from here on out and why some of my friends feel the need to practice for such an ungodly amount of time. . . and what I need to do stop such self destructive practicing habits. (his fingers bleed. his skin peels, he literally has to wrap them in bandages and he still does this! He doesn't even play string instruments! Its two woodwinds and the piano!)
    So yeah . . . Thanks! ^_^

    My brain works differently ( growing up with Autism, I’ve always had to work twice as hard as everyone else) and I know that for me, I can’t practice 8 hours a day because my attention span is short and I have a lot of tension in my right hand. I know that using a metronome will help me with my technique and problems with my rhythm but sometimes I still have trouble following the metronome. I know that now that I’m starting my masters I have to use the metronome a lot more. I try to practice no more than 3-4 hours a day😃❤️🎼

    Hi there, new subscriber here. I’m really enjoying your channel! I’ve played flute since elementary school, and while I didn’t major in music, I did play in college as well. Since graduating, I’ve been wanting to get back into flute and find a performing group to join. I’m really diving back into practicing and finding that while my breath stamina is basically zero, I am having FUN. This video was really helpful for planning my practice time during the work week.

    Neurological studies also indicate that processing deepens if you learn contents that contrast each other.
    So, let's put it simple: You have 3 hours a day, 1 Etude and Technique regiment and 3 repertoire pieces.
    In the end, It will be more effecient to practice all 4 segments each day, rather than alternating them between the days.

    I like to practice in mini sessions. Like, four half hour sessions a day. I do a mini warmup and then dive into whatever I wanna focus on.

  • @loztheviolinist
    @loztheviolinist 6 лет назад +2

    Hi Joanna. For my flute practice sessions I usually aim for an hour or an hour and half with 30 minutes of practice followed by a 30 minute break. I split each 30 minutes into sections - first 30 minutes is usually warm up with harmonics on C followed by scales and arpeggios, the second 30 minutes is either working on exam pieces and/ or technique using Trevor Wye, and the third 30 minutes is working on a piece of my choice. I do work as well, so I can only practice on my days off. But, since I’ve been using this method to practice quite a few people have noticed a difference in my tone. I also keep a practice journal, as well as writing it down in my planner xx

      Blue Diamonds Forever Girl! I love your plan so much! I may have to borrow it from you ♡ I also work, plus I am moving so yeah, my practicing is whenever I don't feel like I am going to pass out from exhaustion. But this is a great idea!

    • @loztheviolinist
      @loztheviolinist 6 лет назад

      Curly and Unconventional Feel free to use it. I don’t always do the full hour and 30 minutes, sometimes I just do an hour depending on what needs work. I started out with this practice method late last year, as I was unexpectedly asked to take part in my first Christmas concert (never thought I was good enough). I would also suggest that you invest in a notebook and/ or planner to keep track of what you have practiced on that day. I’ve gone from going around circles to a structured routine, and it’s worked out great for me so far. For planners, please may I suggest a company called Personal Planner; only because I love everything about that company and you can personalise the planner both inside and out to what you like and what month you would like it to start. Good luck with your new practice routine and I hope it works out for you. You can always tweek it around your way of learning and what you practicing. You can do longer than 30 minute sessions, if it suits you and if you have the stamina to do it ( I haven’t got that stamina just yet) xx

    I‘m also stuffed up & I have a 4h rehearsal & a 1h concert coming up today. I’m quite similar in regards to practice. I can only concentrate on one phrase for a short time, but I can get through a full 4h rehearsal because we’re never practicing the same phrase for more than 5mins. All in all, this week I‘ll have done 11h of singing :D

    I'm kinda like what you're describing but on good days I have a really long attention span but on other days I can't focus on anything. Sometimes I have trouble practicing when I can't focus on one thing for a couple days in a row

  • @bellaperennis9072
    @bellaperennis9072 6 лет назад

    For me it's teally important to start with some pieces I already know well and like, without any warm up. My teacher always wants me to do like 20min of warm up first, but I just feel like I need to blow off some steam first. After I've played for some time I can then work on whichever tricky technique or section for 45min or longer.

    Since I self taught on piccolo before flute I practice a minimum of an hour when I've got time. I love to work with the harder things first then go easy. I'm totally backwards in thinking. Lol. My first instrument is the clarinet and I do the same as well.

    Hi! I know this question is a topic that is quite out of scope but I badly need enlightenment. So here's my story: I am already on my 12th grade this coming school year and by next year I will be in College and I would like to try entering a conservatory of music. Problem is, I don't know if I should choose being a flute major or a violin major. I self taught myself the flute last year but just more than a month ago I took violin lessons which is continuous up to now. I was planning by next month if I stop taking violin lessons and start taking formal flute lessons for the first time? I actually don't know. I know this question is answerable by my own desire but I just want to technically ask anyone who has his/her own opinion to what instrument will I excel and audition for in college? FLUTE (which I am self taught only but started last year which I assume i'm more experienced than the violin but I guess I suck playing because I was not able to take formal flute lessons and if ever I stop taking violin lessons, I will start taking formal flute lessons to audition for music) or VIOLIN (which I just started studying with formal lessons just more than a month ago) Guys I really need enlightenment 'cause I'm really stucked in a dilemma I can't really answer from yesterday and aside from that, I'm afraid my parents will feel upset if I lighly abandon the violin because we've invested money for it already and maybe they will think I'm thinking inconsistently, aside from it, it seems like I will be cramming due to a short time left before making a big decision that will change my life. I mean, there are only less than a year left. Your replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Thanks for video, it comes at a good time. I have limited amount of time to practice because of work. Often it is very frustrating when I can't make enough progress before I meet my teacher in the next lesson. I guess I tend to dig myself in a hole this way. I am the event driven type you mentioned, but I also like to set aggressive targets :p Frankly, I am not too sure what to do about this.

    Can you make another Self Taught video on tone, tone color and how to improve it, I’m self taught myself and there isn’t that much resources online that I can refer to, love your videos by the way huge fan of your work.

    • @goJesusandStarcraft
      @goJesusandStarcraft 6 лет назад

      There are actually LOTS of resources online to learn flute.
      If you haven't already: buy Trevor Wye's omnibus books. They are absolutely fundamental to developing your sound, and they come with CDs that have recording of various excerpts and tone colours, so that you can listen and learn. Other important books to pick up as you advance are Marcel Moyse "de la sonorite" and Michel Debost "The Simple Flute".
      There are lots of flutists on RUclips to learn from. James Galway's and Emmanuel Pahud's masterclasses. Ian Mullin on singing while playing. Brad Garner, Nina Perlove, Gary Schocker, Jennifer Cluff, etc. Each of these flutists have excellent advice on tone as well as other aspects such as how to hold the flute, etc.

  • @tinalee6517
    @tinalee6517 6 лет назад +1

    Nearly two years of flute learning and my tone still matters😐kinda frustrating

    • @goJesusandStarcraft
      @goJesusandStarcraft 6 лет назад +2

      Tone will always matter. Being frustrated that you're "still" having problems with your tone is not the right attitude to have. Think about it this way - even the flute prodigies who played since they were children, who have grown up and attend the elite music schools like Eastman or Julliard spend time on their tone, in fact they actually probably spend MORE time on their tone. The quality of sound that you produce as a flutist is one of the fundamental cornerstones of flute playing. Improving your sound is a lifelong journey, and so you need to have the correct mindset if you want to avoid burning out.
      Yes, I totally understand that having bad tone is frustrating. But I encourage you to keep a couple things in mind: 1. Being able to recognize the problem already puts you way ahead of so many other conceited students who rush into advanced pieces without realizing that they sound terrible.
      2. As you practice tone, your ears will probably become more discerning faster than your tone improves. This means that even if your tone really is getting better, because you're practicing, your ears will begin to hear more problems that need to be fixed. To prevent getting discouraged, you have to maintain the mindset of enjoying fixing the problems in your tone, because you have to understand that being able to hear the problem in your tone is already half the battle, and that fixing problems is a good thing, not a bad thing.
      3. Understand that your lip muscles get tired, and that the physical factor of fatigue is real. I used to have a very brute-force approach to tone practice. I would try to grind through 45 minutes to up to 2 straight hours of various tone exercises like long tones, etc. The fact is that, especially if you haven't practiced in a day or two, that you can only realistically maintain an ideal embouchure for about 15 to 35 minutes. After that, you will feel that your tone is getting worse even though you're practicing more. That's because your embouchure muscles are tired and need a break. If you force yourself to keep practicing when your embouchure muscles are tired, then you will end up reinforcing bad habits that lead to bad tone.
      4. If you're playing in a band, orchestra, or ESPECIALLY a marching band, then your natural instinct will be to play louder so that you can hear yourself better. However, playing loud all the time is extremely counterproductive because in band/ensemble/orchestral settings, there is no way that you'll be able to hear all the nuances of your sound. Playing louder only reinforces habits that result in bad tone. Instead, try as hard as you can to train your ears to filter out other sounds. And, I guess as a side point: by any means possible, try to avoid joining a marching band, which will *severely* inhibit your development as a musician and will cause you to develop lots of tension in your shoulders, neck, and wrists. Marching band is a great athletic activity that, if done right, strengthens your abs and hip flexors and improves your flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular ability. However, it is not good for your musicianship. When I quit marching band, my marching band director specifically told me that I was "a star on the field" and that I was one of the best marchers - but I quit anyways because I knew that marching band was inhibiting my growth as a musician.
      5. Understand that long term improvement takes a long time, but it also lasts a long time. When I was in high school, I'd get stressed every day because I wanted to sound good immediately. I wanted to sound like Denis Bouriakov after a day. That just doesn't happen. However, looking back, all the emphasis I put on tone work has helped me to have a great sound. Even though I quit flute after high school and haven't played seriously in a couple years, I can pick up my flute and within an hour, have 80 or 90% of my tone back. Even though I haven't played in a while, the long term foundational work is still with me, and within an hour I can be playing excerpts like Widor's 3rd movement, which requires lots of color in the tone. So this is an encouragement, that even though you feel like you're the same from day to day, half a year or a year from now, you will have built in lots of foundation that allows you to play at a much higher base level than someone who skips the foundational tone work.
      Sorry for the long post, but I hope this helps. Flute competitions in high school were extremely stressful for me, so I don't want you to get unnecessary stress or depression. Try to maintain a positive outlook on playing the flute. Being able to make music shouldn't be stressful, but should be a privilege that we musicians get to enjoy.

    Maybe event/task-oriented? I like to think that I have gotten one actual thing/task down, and then I can spend my off-time (like while I'm in bed but before I fall asleep) mentally doing it over and over and getting an even better grip on it.
    BTW ... I bought a Baroque flute. :-) I seem to be allergic to keys and am moving further and further away from them as time goes on. It doesn't sound as clear or loud as my 19th century flute, but ... NO KEYS! It's so cool! The older I get, the more I fall for simpler and simpler technology.

    I messed up. I sent my two flutes to the shop and now I don’t have anything to play. I have a crappy student model flute but it only plays a couple of notes, so I can’t really play that. Sometimes I pick it up just to finger along and remind my fingers to do something once in a while.
