I remember back in the day when I was watching Ukri's videos like 'how the f*** can he play so well'. To point out that me and Ukri are born in the same year, I was being a bit of jealous for that he was so talented. But I also always found the motivation and inspiration from Ukri's videos when I thought to myself that 'well he is born on January and I'm born in October so I still have time to catch him!' Obviously I haven't caught his level but thanks Ukri for motivating me even though you didn't know that you were (and still are) motivating me! 🤙😄
Also, great job Olex! Very professionally made interview with great questions and all! Keep it up 🙏

Thanks, Jimi, for taking the time to check out the video and share your thoughts, appreciate it! Ukri might answer to that better but in my humble opinion, results in any activity are the consequences of time and effort combined. 10 000 hours rule is real, It takes time and effort to achieve certain level and often times it also is a result of passion. In Ukri's case, I am sure it was a strong passion, dedication, countless hours rehearsing, sacrificing leasure at times and determination. Everything has its price. It's also about the choices we make. Glad you found this interview insightful for yourself! Keep on rocking 💪

About the children's music part. There's a song called "Varrella Virran" and I remember we've sang that during preschool up until middle school (finnish school system is very different from others I think). Which has a lot of dark and melancholy lyrics. For one the last verse ends with "Pääkallo löytyy valkoinen, varrella virran" which roughly translates to "Skull found white, along the stream" or something like that. Here's a quick google translate of the lyrics:
When you get depressed in the city, you want it to be fresh in the wind
Just set off, and we were found along the stream
Dear, now we are camping. Off clothes are taken off.
There is water warm, to swim but. Along the stream.
Along the stream, along the stream
There is water warm, to swim but
    Along the stream
At night the strange feeling then woke up, you made us do
I went to the beach again, along the stream
I saw the fish dead when I was standing on the beach
The reasons I pondered in my mind, along the stream
Along the stream, along the stream
    The fish died then
    Along the stream
Then I got to the doctor, and that’s what our doctor said
It's stupid that we left, along the stream
There, even the trees turn yellow, and now it’s only July
The reason the plant is, nothing else, along the way
Along the stream, along the stream
There, even the trees turn yellow
    Along the stream
After all I die, the ducks don't make it out of their nests
The land collapses into green water, along the stream
I imagine tomorrow, I beaver can see no
The skull can be found white, along the stream
Along the stream, along the stream
The skull is found in white
    Along the stream
Along the stream, along the stream
The skull is found in white
    Along the stream

Thank you for taking the time to watch the interview and sharing your observations, my friend! It is indeed interesting to analyse the effect of these songs (I bet there are many) on children's' mind. Sounds pretty dark indeed. I wonder why it is like that. Appreciate your comment!

    • @HerskaBk

I'm a finnish musicologist with some experience in education and have to clear this misconception up. The song in question is a translation of Albert Hammond's "Down By The River", a song with a conservationist lyrical theme that Kirka's interpretation "Varrella Virran" is pretty faithful to (as is the case with a lot of 70s-80s finnish popular music translations). It is not, though, children's music per se, though it was often featured in basic education's music textbooks at the time I was growing up.
Another common example of "depressing finnish children's music" is an excerpt from the christmas song "Hei tonttu-ukot hyppikää" ("Prance now, christmas elves" or smth along those lines) that reads "A life is short / and even that dark and fraught in misery". Superficially it does seem exemplary of the phenomenon, but the overarching theme and mood of the song suggest the message of enjoying good moments in the midst of the troubles of life.
Tropes of depression, violence, substance abuse and reclusiveness perpetuate finnish culture in a cycle of ironic repetition, but I think the cliché is slowly starting to wear off from mainstream popular culture. For obvious reasons these themes aren't present in children's media any more than other countries, though.

@@HerskaBk Thank you so much for taking the time for sharing your expertise, my friend! This is interesting observation, no doubt! How do you think why these themes were present in those songs in the first place? Does folklore music provide any clues to these questions? Appreciate your contribution!

    • @ThePefger
      @ThePefger 3 года назад +1

@@HerskaBk Yes, this makes sense. But I do remember singing this song at the age of 7-10 from a music book. I'm glad someone has more insight on the origin of the song etc. So thank you for that!

That is an excellent question. I have some guesses as to what might have contributed to the stereotypical melancholy of Finnish culture.
      WAR:
History is not my area of expertise so forgive me for being very vague here, but the origins of Finland's nation have been a bit troublesome and have no doubt contributed to the cultural atmosphere. Finland's independence were granted by something of a coincidence and good timing with the fall of the Russian empire after WW1. Russia's motives for granting the independence were based on furthering the social revolution, and internal tensions inside the newly independent Finland nation blossomed in a violent civil war in the south between socialists and the bourgeoisie.
The trauma of war divided the people to those with a socialist background and the victors of the civil war. Unrest and violence between Finnish communists and the right wing continued for decades, until WW2 came about and the USSR's claims on Finnish land got the nation involved in another series of wars that collectively resulted in some land loss, though the nation's independence was preserved. So the early independence was fraught with violence and unrest with a part of the population participating in multiple wars in a single lifetime. One can only imagine what kind of role models these war-broken men were for their children and how it affected the psyche of the following generation as well.
So the wars are obviously a very traumatic and mythologized part of the nation's past. Even after our own armed conflicts came to an end, the constant fear of living next to USSR during the cold war and atomic era is still present in the collective consciousness. After the fall of the USSR the Finland was launched into a depression as our economy was hugely dependent on exports to the east. Which brings us to another important theme,
      THE ECONOMY:
You are born in the 1930s into a lower-stratum Finnish family. What kind of professions are available to you? To my understanding, typical options would be agriculture or forestry work in addition to which one would hunt and fish to provide. In some areas mining and tar burning are options, but generally we're talking physical labor that is heavily restricted by the weather conditions. For example, during periods at the beginning and at the end of winter lakes and rivers freeze to a point that prevent travel by boat but don't support walking on ice. Additionally, the frost in the ground would thaw and refreeze, making roads untraverseable. In preparation for this period, one would have to have food and supplies ready as work and travel become impossible. Famines were common, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the country with poorer infrastructure and harsher weather conditions.
Additionally, the nation is isolated by the baltic sea and language barriers bewteen the other nordic countries. Of course, to the east there was the USSR, to which relations were suspicious at best. I'd argue the economical and geographical isolation plays a part in a feeling of being alone in the world that is present in Finnish culture.
      THE WEATHER:
In addition to the economical restrictions of shorter seasons for agriculture and travel, the long winters and prolonged darkness is an obvious factor in the obsession with melancholy in Finnish culture. On the other hand, the untouched nature and harsh conditions are also a source of beauty and pride. I think in a lot of nordic people there is a sense of masculine pride in surviving in unforgiving conditions.
The inspiration artists draw from nature needs little explanation, but I think the mental toll of it all is a fairly underdiscussed issue. At the end of the day the harsh weather is above all a burden, and I'd argue that bundled with the expectations of Lutheran work ethic and stereotypical masculinity it contributes to the imagery of depression and melancholy in Finnish culture.
This turned out to be an essay, and still obviously many themes are left undiscussed but I'd rather not speculate more on topics out of my area of expertise. These are just some observations from a cultural viewpoint and are to be taken with a grain of salt. I am sorry to be unable to offer any discussion on the relations of Finnish folklore and Lutheran-Christian religiosity as I know very little of ethnography and theology. I suspect, though, that the old Finnish folklore are more of a source of fantasy and inspiration i.e. in some metal music than it is a relevant source of the melancholy of Finnish culture. For that I think the traumas of war and the plight of material life in the north offer better explanations.
