Beautiful aircraft. I was privileged to go up in it a few years ago. Definitely a life long memory. So glad I did! Especially after seeing it flying over my area I live in for years. I could hear it coming from miles away and would always stop what I was doing and go watch it come over. The sound is amazing. Couldn't imagine being a German during WW2 and hearing a thousand of those coming! The ground must have shook
I could not imagine what that would have been like to experience. It had to be absolutely terrifying. I am glad that you took the opportunity to go up because there really is nothing like it and having that first hand experience just to have a little taste of what those 19 year old kids were going through. Even at 1500 it was cold, I could not imagine what it would have been like at 30,000. True heroes. She is a beautiful aircraft.
@@NickFliesMedia I've read and watched everything about the B17 and it was the first thing I thought about climbing in was all the guys who flew in these planes. Both the survivors and the men lost. It was truly a big reason we won. And there is a pretty good chance that you won't be able to fly in one of these aircraft very much longer due to their age. Again it was a life long memory
I did my instrument rating at YIP. Our hangar was in the same building as the museums hangar (right next door) at the time. I got several "follow the B-17" (or B-25/C-47) taxi clearances. I learned pretty quick, to keep a good distance!!! Y/L had been a regular in the skies around my house...typically at least once a week, throughout the summer. She was definitely missed this year. We have seen the 25 a little more than before though. Now...not to brag or anything... I was working at my local airport on a day that Y/L came in to do some filming. I was tasked with taking the film crew out by the runway. I thought that would be awesome...then the boss came on the radio, said they had an empty seat, if I wanted it! "Feet don't fail me now"!!! Started out in the radio room...roamed around during the flight, and had the nose to myself for 3 low approaches and landing! I didn't pay a dime and was actually getting paid at the time!!! I also got a free ride on Yankee Warrior, because I was working the day they came in to sell rides. This summer, when the Vietnam memorial was in town, the museum brought out a Huey. Every flight went right over my house at about 150-200'. Every 20 mins or so, for 4 days! Dad, being a retired Huey pilot...I got him over there and they comped us both. The crew was GREAT, with helping Dad on (Parkinsons, can't walk). I haven't seen so many salutes in years!!!
That is an amazing story! Thank your dad for his service. Parkinsons is rough to go through. I am glad he was able to go up and get that experience as well.
Yeah I saw that. MT got a great video of it. I was planning on going but came down with some kind of bug and didn't end up doing anything all weekend. It is such a shame that they sold her and she is gone now. While I understand the reasons why the museum sold her, I kind of wonder if they sold the Golden Goose to keep the egg. I wish they were more transparent about it. They really could have made an event out of seeing her one more time before shes gone. I hope the new owner takes good care of her. It sounds like she is going to New Zealand for a full restoration before returning to CA. I really wonder what kind of restoration she really needs though because inside it was really clean and you could tell that she was in good hands. I know Yankee Lady and Sentimental Journey have long been considered the most well restored B-17s out there so I really wonder what it will have, other than fully working turrets and likely a new livery and nose art.
They kept them down pretty much the entire time except for when we were in flight. They closed the doors before starting the takeoff roll and then opened them immediately after turning off the runway after landing. I would not know for sure but I wonder if it has to do with heat.
I am glad you got to see it! Not retiring, but sold to a new owner and on its way for a full restoration and then well see. The rumored owner does fly his aircraft, but I wonder how much the B-17 will fly, or if anyone will ever get to ride on it again.
@@NickFliesMedia I had been hoping to get a flight in a B-17 at some point as it is my favorite WW2 aircraft. I grew up on the movie and TV show "Twelve O'Clock High" and the TV show was filmed not far from where I lived, so I saw the B-17s in flight numerous times. Now that I finally have the ability to take the flight, there are no more B-17s left offering such flights. I definitely hope that the new owners will again offer this at some point in the future.
This was at Erie-Ottawa Airport at Port Clinton, OH next to the Liberty Aviation Museum. They have a beautiful, air worthy B-25 on display that I wish they would have pulled outside while the 17 was in town that weekend but Georgie's Gal was inside getting some work done.
Very unecessary background music..really does not fit the video...the engine sound is all that's needed....music was very annoying...edit and remove it...please.
I tried to keep just the engine noise but I ended up needing something to cover it because the microphone picked up all of the conversations that were going on, some were pretty private as well as a weird buzz and wind noise. Plus you could hear all of the cuts which were pretty distracting. I tried to keep the music as quiet as I could but still give it a bit of a cinematic feeling and then amplified the start up noises from the external shots that I took from the flight before me. I would love to get a chance to go up on another flight someday and take some of the more professional mics and really pick up those sounds. The in flight videos was taken on my old iPhone 11, which didn't have the best quality microphone or image quality. I have an idea of getting a wider lens and using a good mic for the inflight video and maybe paring it with a GoPro to get some flight deck shots but I would have to get another chance and permission from the crew. Honestly this time, I was afraid to ask. If I could do it again, I would have asked to suction cup my GoPro to a window and let it record the entire flight.
Thanks for the feedback but in this case the background music was subtle AND necessary because I used it to cover up the private conversations going on in the background of everyone enjoying their flight, plus the wind and engine noises inside that the microphone I was using distorted . I kept the beautiful noises of the engines, cleaned up the start up noise, breaks and other ambient sounds that made a ride on a B-17 magical. If I ever get another chance, I would love to take some professional mics and mic up the inside of the aircraft to really capture that sound, but I didn't take my better equipment up because I wanted to enjoy the ride and just captured what I could with my phone. If I ever get another chance someday, I'll focus on making a better video.
In 2004 i got to fly on the B -17 the 909 i will never forget that sweet beautiful bird. RIP 909vand it's 7 lost souls.
RIP 909. I am glad you got to go for a ride on it. It was a regular visitor here. We sure miss seeing her.

i'd hear it coming and run outside looking for it . i'm just east of milan
Me tooo i always reconized that B-17 sound.
@@NickFliesMedia, Amen to that there is no more beautiful plane ever built .

I was there that day! Couldn't afford a ride but I loved watching her from the ground!
It was so awesome to see all the people there that day! She was beautiful. Hopefully you will get another chance someday!
Will miss the sound of her engines and that unmistakable red tail. Climbed aboard and explored her many years ago at the museum.

Shouldnt the bomb bay doors be closed for take off?
