Excellent video, and helped us save a ton of money compared to the WDH and sway control that Camping World was trying to sell us with huge installation fees! I love contributors like you who make RUclips so valuable to us borderline DIY types who just need a little encouragement and illustration to get the job done ourselves!
Thanks! Glad you liked it, and are going to be saving money in the process. That's why I show things like this. The WDH and this are really not hard to install and only require basic tools. The sway kit is a bit more difficult since holes need to be drilled, but still pretty easy. Good luck, G.
Thanks for a good, straight forward video. I pick up my new to me 24ft camper next Wednesday and I'm looking at this very hitch and sway bar. The previous owner already installed on of these on the camper, so I'm thankful for that.
Saw that HF sold the weight distribution set in another video and then ran up on yours and damn glad I did. Saved me a bunch of money and headache. Was debating on should or shouldn't I get a weight distr. Set and if I should use a sway bar. Glad I found your video Sir.
Rusty Williams Thanks Rusty! I reviewed distribution and the sway kit separately since they are two different HF products. I say use both. This kit does work. It groans like a whale when turning, but it's a small price to pay for control. Plus it lets people know your coming...lol. Good luck! G.
Thanks for not wasting time and footage with the drilling process. My question is: It seems that this kit will limit the maximum jacknife angle of the trailer, right ?
Thanks Roy! It can to a degree, but I can't say for sure what that degree is. I can say it's not that major since I've done some pretty tight stuff with no problems. If you get into a tight situation where you're really jackknifing to the max- you can remove it ahead of time if it gets in the way. Hope this helps, G.
Wow, this is what I needed! My little TT came with that little ball already mounted on tongue. I drove it down the highway for a short trip and found the sway problem with semi's. No problem with oncoming semis though. For this price, I'll give this a shot, and looks like I have it already half mounted. Just need the receiver hitch part done. Thanks much!
No problem Kim! Yes, you're half way there since the ball is already on the trailer. Give it a try. It should help with sway. If you still have problems- look into a weight distribution hitch to go along with this. I have a video posted on the HF distribution hitch. Good luck, G.
I used a similar device to stop a caravan swaying. It was a round clutch on a straight bar that slid through a keeper thus allowing the caravan to turn. It was adjustable and made towing very easy indeed. I would highly recommend a device like this to anyone towing a high-sided trailer. Best Wishes, Brendan.

thanks for video!! would you know if this will help prevent sway for smaller trailers? I have a small 5 x 9ft trailer with small tires that sway when i have my ATV in the back? or is this for bigger trailers/campers
Thanks William! It might help, but I would check how your loaded first before getting one. It almost sounds like you might possibly have a tongue weight problem. Too little tongue weight, and it might cause the trailer to whip around. Too much tongue weight, and it might push the rear of the tow vehicle around. I would move the ATV forwards, or backwards to try to get it loaded correctly. I'm no pro, and don't know what your setup looks like, but that's where I would start. Good luck, G.
Thank you for this well put together video. I also watched the distribution hitch video which was equally helpful. I will be sure to check those chains before I leave the store. Thanks again
Picked it up today. The chains were correct. I also noticed that the nuts holding the chains to the spring bars are crimped nuts so Teflon nuts are not needed.
I bought two due to trailer weight. The comment about the big screws are accurate as they are really poor. I couldn’t find the self tapping boots so I bought a tap and die set. This cost more than both my bars but I now have another nice tool set. Going on first road trip wither tomorrow but they should be fine. Find an empty parking lot and see how tight you can turn so not to rip the bolts out.
I saw a review on another brand (remarkedly similar in appearance) where the You Tuber said he decided to use a slightly larger drill bit for those "self tapping" screws because they required so much torque. I would be tempted to do what you did, or drill all the way through and buy longer bolts with nuts.
That's cool Pat. I would be hesitant to use a larger hole for to use the fasteners that came with the unit. They would be more prone to pulling out. I think your idea would be best if you can drill all the way through the frame and use longer bolts and nuts. If you do choose that route, make sure you don't get into the harness with the bit if it runs down that side of the frame. Good luck either way you go, G.
I just bought one from HF today! Just under $26.00 with 20% off coupon. Hope to install it this week on my 19 foot Aljo TT. I hope it takes care of my sway issues.
That's cool! Hope it helps. If not, look into their weight distribution hitch if you don't already have one. Between the two, you should be able to take care of it. I have a review posted on it as well. Good luck, G.
I can't say for sure Mike. I held up bits alongside the screw so the threads were proud of the bit size. It was probably around 5/16", but don't quote me on that. The ones I used were 3/8" 16 pitch that included the self taping feature. You can use a standard 3/8" 16 pitch bolt, but would need to tap them manually. There are tap drill size charts for threading online. Hope this helps and Good luck, G.
Thanks for the reply. I bought the same bolts you did and had a miserable time yesterday getting them threaded into the 5/16” hole I drilled. I’ll try again today and use a tap/dye to run my own threads if I fail again
@@mikerambunctious6135 No problem Mike! Tapping the hole might just be the ticket you need, especially if your frame rail is quite thick. Let me know how it turns out, G.
+gonepriused No problem! If you also installed the sway control kit, you might have to remove it if you ever need to jack knife or it might contact the trailer frame. But for easy backing situations, you probably won't need to. Good luck, G.
I have a utility trailer 12’ long that I run from Wisconsin to Colorado 2-3 times a year. Trailer tracks fine, I always worry about blowing a tire and having a wild ride. Think this would be cheap insurance

I would have replaced the "self tapping bolts" with proper through bolts with nuts and locking hardware. A typical frame piece you would "tap" into isn't thick enough to support one full thread. One good pot hole and you will strip the bolts right out of your frame.
Funny, i didnt see the installation process, just a beginning preparation, and final result end. Nothing in between, or how its supposed to go on. Rear ball installation or front attachment process. I m lost between buying the mount screws and what it should look like once installed. Whats the process in between?
Funny, because I pretty much covered everything other than saying to reference the manual for the welding position of the ball plate if you don't have a WD hitch. I did not show drilling holes, bolting the backing plate and ball on the frame, how to install the ball, or install the sway bar and clips. I did give the measurements on where to install the ball and said what I did past that showing the end result. If you need to see someone drill holes, install clips and a ball- don't get one. Or pay someone to install it. G.
After watching both videos I would like to take some test drives with you to feel the before and after difference (Haha). Nice setup. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mac! I haven't even tested it out yet- but believe it will help out greatly. The hitch is longer than what I had so now my whip is too short to reach the plug socket. I'm wiring up an extension as I type...lol. G.
I doubt I will get a response seeing how old this is but do you recall the pilot hole bit size you used for these self threading bolts? also have you had any issues with them backing out since this install? thanks
I do keep up with all of my videos Mike, but no- I don't remember the pilot size for the bolts I used. But, if you know the size of your bolts- a quick search will reveal the size you need to drill. And no, they have not backed out since being installed. Hope this helps, G.

I bought two of these, I don't see how you can mount this on the other side (drivers side) it cannot mount to the ball that would be on the a frame, there is no way to turn it around
To mount the one on the left side, loosen up the adjuster lever, pull it apart, and flip/turn one piece 180 degrees and put it back together. That will allow you to mount it in the proper configuration for the drivers side. Hope this helps, G.

They both work well together and work great man! I'm completely satisfied. I did have to get larger chains for the distro hitch and make the shim since I wasn't satisfied with the slop. The sway control works great as well. It did start groaning like a whale when turning. I'm learning that's just the nature of them. I have not cleaned it, which is supposed to help quieten it down. But, I can live with the noise over being pushed all over the road. The distro hitch levels out the tow vehichle well and it also helps with bouncing up and down when going over bumps/etc. It settles down really fast. Having them, or being without, is like night and day for me! I don't know if you've seen my video on the distro hitch, but take a look if you like. If do pick them up, be sure to use the 25% off coupons! Good luck, G. ruclips.net/video/DoGXlBMowM8/видео.html

***** Yep, was pretty easy. My drill moved a bit on me when drilling the 2nd hole, so the bracket isn't perfectly level, but I can live with that! Thanks for the video - it was helpful. Giggity.
is there a hole where the pin goes through or do I have to have one driller mom trailer already has a ball mounted but I don't think there's a hole for the Carter PIN to go through
Clint, it comes with a plate that would need to be welded to the vehicle hitch. I mention it here in the video ruclips.net/video/-pQ5A9_AaWw/видео.html The manual covers it. You can download the manual from their site to get a better idea as to what would need to be done. Hope this helps. Good luck, G.
ghostses ahhhh gotcha! I had a friend give me the kit and it didn't have any directions with it, just the parts. I saw the small bracket with one hole and the rest was self explanatory except for that. I was thinking I was supposed to drill a big hole and sandwich it between the ball and receiver. But welding it will be so much easier! Ty!

but you didnt go step by step in the process, actually drill, or place the sway control onto the ball, or the ball onto the receiver. i just heard more about the specs of the item, then the product already in place, like 'done'. nothing in 'how its being done'.

Won't the drilled holes eventually rust..causing the sway bar to fail? And doesn't drilling holes possibly reduce the weight that can be hauled?
I don't know, G.

after drilling one hole 1 1/2 hours I found the the trailer tounge solid. I got a neighbor weld the ball on the tounge. If you find you don't hit hollow after 1/4 in, get welded.
Good tip Eddie! Thanks for sharing, G.
Do you recall the size of those self-threading Fastenal screws?
Brent, here's a link to the ones I used. You might have to copy and paste it since it's so long. Hope this helps, G.

now that you installed the harbor frt, distro hitch and sway control how does it work for you.
Good luck, G.

thanks for answering roll on buddy
SHOTGUNJIM1
No problem! G.
Good overview, Matthew McConaughey!
ksteak27 LOL...Thanks! G.
***** Do people tell you you sound like him?? BTW, I installed mine today after watching this video... thanks!!!
ksteak27 That's cool! Did the install go fairly easily?
No, you're the first to say I sound like him. I've had many other comments that I sound like other people, but can only remember one off the top of my head. Cleveland from the Cleveland show...lol. I like yours much better...lol. I'm sure the ladies would agree with me as well...lol. G.
***** Yep, was pretty easy. My drill moved a bit on me when drilling the 2nd hole, so the bracket isn't perfectly level, but I can live with that! Thanks for the video - it was helpful. Giggity.
ksteak27 That's cool. Function before fashion I say. Working's working! Take care, G.
is there a hole where the pin goes through or do I have to have one driller mom trailer already has a ball mounted but I don't think there's a hole for the Carter PIN to go through
Randy, if the ball is the same size, it should work. There is no hole in the balls. The pin slips past the underside of the ball. Good luck, G.
can this be used without using the weight distributing hitch
I may be wrong Kevin, but I don't see why not. Good luck, G>
Yes as long as you can mount the plate for the ball to your hitch
Yes it will help control sway either way.
How do you turn with it
It extends and retracts when turning. Take care, G.
So if you don't have that hitch where do you attach it to truck end?
Clint, it comes with a plate that would need to be welded to the vehicle hitch. I mention it here in the video
ruclips.net/video/-pQ5A9_AaWw/видео.html
The manual covers it.
Ty!
Very good Clint! Glad to assist. Take care, G.
Good job
Thanks Chris! Take care, G.

+ghostses thank you!!!
Motoxryder247
No problem! G.
but you didnt go step by step in the process, actually drill, or place the sway control onto the ball, or the ball onto the receiver. i just heard more about the specs of the item, then the product already in place, like 'done'. nothing in 'how its being done'.
Not teaching basic skills here- just an overview of what it took to install the unit. If that much detail is required for an install- I recommend paying for installation. Good luck, G.
Thanks man.
No problem Mark! Take care, G.
that is like a steering damper for a motorcycle
It is Dave. G.
You said 24 you marked 21
No Dennis, I said 24 and just pointed with my sharpie somewhere around 21 down the tape. I was never seen marking at 21 was I? G.
@@ghostses I ran that back as well as I need to run it at 22. It's marked at 24.
That it was Matt. As for needing to run it at 22", I don't really know what problems might be encountered. I guess you would need to try it out and make sure the travel works properly. Good luck, G.
@@ghostses Thanks.
