I am a S&W, Colt, Remmington, Glock certified armorer and I can personally tell you that S&W's quality control issues started when they went after MIM's parts & pieces on a whole scale manner, like they did. They have fallen into the trap that they believe they are invincible and the best out there and nothing is wrong with their current designs. They are wrong.

From my understanding, the QC seems to vary from line to line. Their service pistols like the M&P9's, M&P45's, M&P15's, etc., are fine. But their revolvers and their newer models have been having a lot of problems. Is that your assessment?

I own the following S&W pews.
    -M&P 2.0 9MM zero problems
-M&P Sport II 5.56 zero problems

In my opinion, S&W offers an excellent selection and high quality firearms for a very reasonable price.

My last 3 S&W revolvers all had to go back for issues. Misaligned barrel on one, and no rifling in the barrels of the other two. One was actually a smooth bore. Based on our very small sample size, they are at a 50% acceptable quality rate

I am a graduate of S&W Firearms Instructor as well as Armorers school for Law Enforcement in the 80s. My son purchased a S&W 500 this year and had it shipped to local dealer. It was supposed to be a product of the premium hand assembled individual fitted process. What a boat anchor. It was his dream gun of his last deployment. Dreams were disappointed especially when the front sight broke on the second round of discharge. He grew up handling my service weapons that I had worked on and his dreams as well as mine were dashed when he picked up the "CUSTOM SHOP" boat anchor. They have taken a really good designed weapon and ruined it with the changes in design and lost the professional gunsmithing attributes.

I purcahsed a S&W EZ Performance Center on Friday. Took it home, dry fired the trigger a few times and it would not reset. Took it back to the store the next day and it had to be sent back to S&W for repair. I purchased this firearm as a potential EDC for my wife. I concur with you, S&W has some QC issues.

👍👍Thanks Dan. I Own several s&w semi autos and revolvers and I have to say I’ve never had an issue with any of them. I know different people have different experiences with all the gun manufacturers but s&w has always been great for me and my wife. We both carry a s&w semi auto everyday and we’ve never had any problems . But like I said at the beginning different people have different experiences. I will say the M&P line is my favorite line of pistols.

      I've been an S&W fan since I was 14 and bought a M27. An SD9VE was terrible.
When the Shields came out, I saved up and bought a 45 Shield. Hated it. After the second catastrophic failure, which was common enough there are You Tube videos about it, I took a bath and traded it on a Glock 30SF. I became a Glock queer.

I already got the SD9 2.0, I also have the first Gen. The 2.0 is better and since the mags are interchangeable I don’t have to buy any extras. I literally just picked it up from my FFL yesterday took it out at 10am this morning put 300 rounds thru it no issues at all. I got it from KYGUNCO for $299. Perfect Car/Truck gun. It’s accurate enough to do the job it’s intended for. I also picked up the new Spec BTW. Awesome gun in case you were wondering. But I personally have never had an issue with S&W. Their customer service has always been excellent for me. But yeah the gun is absolutely worth it.

With the exception of the M&P 10mm out of the seven S&Ws I bought over the past 2 year have been great. The 10mm had tons of issues but S&W was really good about it and I sent it in and got it back in 7 weeks and works perfect now. As long as that trigger lock is on the revolvers, I will not buy one... they should never have been put on those tools to begin with. The new 2.0 version delutes and confuses folks with the other offerings from S&W imo... as well as profit margins with a separate production line. They have plenty of budget offerings such as Shield, Shield EZ... Intro S&W M&P 2.0's are available on sale regularly at really reasonable prices. But, I always say, "choices are a good thing."

I think any savvy gun buyer who purchases via the internet would be foolish to pass on the CZ p10-C at it's current discounted price right now. I would pick that over almost every budget polymer 9mm going. That being said, I do want the new updated S&W SD, but not until next year when the price will inevitability go down or when S&W does their yearly rebates right around November.

I'm a fan of Smith & Wesson, for the most part.
    I have a Gen 1 SD9VE that I love.
I modded it with a Galloway Precision trigger and a Mcarbo spring kit. I also added some Hi Viz fiber optic sights.
I love carrying that gun. It has been 100% reliable.
    I also have a Gen 1 M&P 9 Shield.
I put a Crimson Trace Laserguard on it with some fiber optic sights. I also added a MagGuts +2 conversion to 2 8 round mags. It carries like a dream in a belly band holster. 100% reliable, as well.
The one newer Smith & Wesson I just couldn't get behind was a Model 57 Classic 41 Mag I had. I payed close to $1000 for it. Not worth it in my opinion.
It had the internal firing pin and the pressed on barrel shroud.
I used to have a Model 27 357 Mag back in the 80's that I absolutely loved.
I could kick myself for selling it.
I was hoping this newer Model 57 would fill that void. It didn't. Nice looking gun and all. I ended up selling it. I don't miss it either!
The older models with the pinned barrels and the firing pin on the hammer are way better!
    No stupid Hillary Hole either!
    Great video, as always, Dan!

I've had trouble twice now & had to send back to S&W my PC Shield Plus 4" ported barrel with fiber optic sights. But to be honest, I've sent my P365 back to Sig 3 times, my P365XL to Sig 3 times (twice for dead triggers). I've shot to death my Ruger LC9sPro and a 1st Gen CZ P10C & both gave me new pistols & the new P10C was a 2nd Gen which is a most wonderful pistol. I've sent back my Ruger LCP2 and my Kimber Micro 9 as well. I've also sent back my Springfield Ronin Elite 1911 in 10 mm as the breech face was rough from the factory, but after they resurfaced it, it is now 100%. I've only got 1 Glock, a 10 mm Glock 20 but I was able to rebend the slide stop spring (twice) to get it to function properly. I don't especially care for Glocks, but they seem to be WAY MORE DURABLE. But I shoot thousands of rounds through some of these pistols, and that's why they fail so often.

I went with the GP100, bought a hammer spring kit, and dry fired a lot. The trigger is excellent. I always shoot DA.
Ruger had a thing for 12# revolver triggers. I picked up an LCR-X and the DA trigger was not a 12# trigger. So maybe they have changed their philosophy.

  • @william629
    @william629 9 месяцев назад +2

I admire the SD series for its original trigger. The SD9VE is the first firearm I ever shot at a CPL class, and people thought I was an experienced shooter by the way I was grouping with that pistol. I don't think the trigger pull is too heavy for the average person, but to be fair, I have exceptional hand and finger strength from years of strength training and grappling; however, I think the original SD9VE is an excellent choice for new shooters looking for a self defense option because of the trigger. Like Hrfunk highlighted in his video on the SD9VE, it has the type of trigger that's forgiving in the sense that you're not going to pull the trigger unintentionally due to stress and panic. The trigger is more than manageable, and it makes for a deliberate shot when you're ready to shoot at the intended target. I'll probably swing by a gun range to try out the new SD9 2.0 though, if and when they have it available.

Whether it's the Kel-Tec inspired new product lineup, lousy quality control, or being asleep at the wheel when it comes to their revolver division (I'll never purchase a new S&W revolver with that internal lock and hole, and how are they missing out on a 3" K-frame carry gun?), I sincerely hope they get things together sooner than later. I still love that gun too, and I’ll certainly continue supporting the company. I’m with TFG regarding lack of interest in S&W’s rifles & shotguns of late. It’s a lot of chasing the market, kind of like the kid who only does what the other cool kids are doing. It feels like there might be some internal conflict within the company between the marketing team, the team of engineers, and the obligatory team of lawyers. Interesting. I have bought a number of S&W (all from the M&P line) pistols over the last 3+ years,. Only had problems with one (the bodyguard) and have had no issues with customer service.

I have to agree, I personally love s&w and have had several over the years. Got the new m&p 10mm 2.0 and it wouldn't run a full mag. Looked online and it seems like a lot of people had the same exact issue and when sent in for warranty the literally did nothing. So I tried a few home remedies, same end result. After I started seeing people suggesting $100-$200 in aftermarket parts I just sold it to a pawn shop. Very disappointing, I love the m&p line and I've always wanted a 10mm. Hope this new sd9 will have a better trigger, first edc I bought was a sd40ve. I actually liked it but the trigger was awful.

Almost picked up an SD40, but 40 isn't so popular anymore - great cartridge.
I was very disappointed in the 2.0 10mm - sold it after one trip to the range.
And I agree with all of the issues you bring up. Quality seems to be much lower lately.

Only recent S&W experience is with the Shield Plus. Pistol seems excellent, but one of the 13 round mags was assembled incorrectly - not allowing the follower to fully reach the top of the mag. That was kind of annoying, since it's not hard to assemble correctly, especially from the manufacturer.

Had a MP 2.0 9 the front tritium fell out on the third shot, customer service handled it, but it was a little tough. First gun was a SW40VE, terrible trigger but it worked great, also had a SD9, definitely better than the SW by a lot. The 2.0 should kill the market in that price range I think. you can already get them for $299, has me interested.

I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion of the current situation with Smith & Wesson revolvers. I used to love and collect their firearms, but haven’t bought one in years as they seemed to have dropped their quality too much. I hate the Hilary hole, it’s a place for sweat and dust to accumulate and mess up the gun. I hate that they quit flash chroming the hammers and triggers on their stainless revolvers, with the blued/color casehardened parts being so easy to rust. If I get another revolver it will be a Colt or a Ruger.

I'm sure there will be folks who will buy the SD9 Version 2.0, providing Smith keeps the price under $300. More than that, I don't think so. I've been very disappointed in Smith revolvers over the past several decades. I had to spend more than $400 to get a "Performance Center" 929JM running the way it should. The last "good" S&W revolver I have was an early 1896 66-2. (You are welcome to shoot that one - it has some history behind it.) However, I do really like my M&P PC 10mm. Out of the box it is everything I expected.

I suspect that every few years some suit at S&W announces, "Hey, let's try to be more like Taurus!" Don't think so? Then, explain the Governor!! A couple years back I bought two copies of the same gun from S&W. Both 1911s, purchased about 3 months apart. Both magazine releases broke during firing and fell out!!! "Good enough seems to be their new motto!

If it turns out to be not any better than my Stoeger STR-9 that was $270 w/3 magazines & 3 back straps, a magazine loader. Stoeger is an unbelievable budget pistol....then I already have a great value priced 9mm Glock clone! I wouldn't need another one!

Awesome video as usual! Once M&P PD trades hit the market I could never understand what the SD9 was for. Over the years I've purchased M&P PD trades from different vendors in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 acp for under $300. For EDC, they are already scratched or have finish wear so I don't have to stress about that and I've fired countless rounds with zero failures.

I bought an sd9 recently. It was used but barely. I was very leery after having to fix a few Sigmas for friends. Broken extractor and broken striker, pretty bad groups as well. I like the 2.0 improvements but I honestly don't have a problem with my sd9 trigger but the new trigger and I assume springs sound great. The new top slide serrations are a very nice touch too. I compare the sd9 to my Glocks. About 500 rnds in and very impressed, especially for the money. As to S&W quality, in 40 plus years I've had 2 brand new Smiths go back for fixes. One K frame and one 3rd gen auto. It happens, especially when you consider everyone else has had their fair share of problems too.

I've only owned one S&W semi auto and it's the M&P 2.0 in 10mm which has been fantastic. The trigger could be improved and I'm considering an upgraded trigger but I like it.
For a cheap 9mm I bought the security 9 and it fits my hand perfectly and has been flawless.
I have an S&W model 520 7 shot 357 with the ti cylinder and I love that thing, can't justify the expense of 627 for one additional round no matter how much I want it.
A Ruger match champ is a good alternative to the Smith if you really hate the lock but the lock on mine has never been engaged so it's just a wasted expense that got past onto me.
It's interesting to me that Rugers price has surpassed Smith.

Bought a bodyguard 380 acp a few years ago…I like double action but that trigger was horrible. Sold it. Bought a new 43c revolver last summer. Trigger and/or cylinder binding. Many light primer strikes. Sent it back to Smith. They deemed it “unrepairable” and replaced it with another copy (which is fine with me) but the whole process took 3 months. The new copy was better but still some light primer strikes WITH CCI Standard ammo. Ended up taking a significant money hit because I sold that one too. Bought a Ruger 8 shot LCR 22lr…love it.
I still dig Smiths- when they’re made right…and being the objective guy I am, I would say this new Smith 9 (if it’s trouble free) could cut into the Taurus 9 market.

Well-said, based on experience, as always. Thanks for the cogent candor. (As a CZ-Colt fanboy, watching Smith through the decades has been entertaining and heart-wrenching.) Glad to hear S&W may have turned a corner. (Any government regulation or requirement isn't needed...allow the free-market to make those decisions.)

It's already $300 here. I'd like to try it cause I don't care for the SD9VE and I'm curious to see if it really is improved. That said, there's a lot of options out there even at that price point these days, so the question I have to ask myself is, do I wanna spend $300 on a new version of a previously disappointing gun, or do I wanna get a SAR, Canik, or Tisas gun, since none of theirs have disappointed me yet.
