  • Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologised to families who say their children have been harmed by social media, during a fiery hearing in the US Senate.
Mr Zuckerberg - who runs Instagram and Facebook - said "no one should go through" what they had.
He was questioned along with the bosses of TikTok, Snap, X and Discord for almost four hours by senators from both parties.
Lawmakers wanted to know what they are doing to protect children online.

Parents also need to take responsibility for not monitoring their children activities on the internet. They have tools on phones and tablets to block what your child can access. Also parents should go check the history to make sure the child is being safe when searching online

When something bad happens to their kids, parents always blame someone "outside". True that social media is ruining society...but is also true that lazy parents are letting the tablet and the phone do the parenting. They use the easy way to make the kids behave. Kids are not supposed to spend hours staring at a screen, unsupervised to make it worse. So, the ones to blame are actually the parents that were too lazy to do their damn job.

Social Responsibility is the key issue here. I don’t think Meta platforms intentions are to hurt young children. The very nature of social media is addictive and fast paced. A young mind needs to be fed information slowly and accurately because there is so much they haven’t learned about the world. Children are hyperactive and curious because they have a desire to learn more about the world, their environment needs to slow down for them, not speed up. Quite frankly young children should not be allowed on these platforms, but that is the responsibility of their guardians. I think META should have feed limits on kids accounts and automatic timed lockouts with a reminder to stretch or spend time doing something else. The objective should be to help them, not exploit them for marketing.

'Social media'? It is a publication and the owner has editorial responsibilities.
If the publisher does not have sufficient editorial control of their publication then they are irresponsible to the point of being legally wreckless.
However parents have the responsibility to manage their childrens net viewing habits.
Parents who do not do that are negligent and irresponsible parents. It is a parents legal responsibility to take sufficient care of their children.
