All the best to the little ones! 🦜 Our film crew experiences firsthand how beautiful these birds are in their natural habitat and we truly hope that the parrots can be returned to their home soon! These smugglers feel proud of themselves for scoring against the government and do not know or care that the consequences of their thoughtless action can produce disastrous results. Instead of "producing" cheap pets, humans should help conserve birdlife. These little fellows are not only important for local ecosystems they also make our planet more colorful!
Not to mention the trauma to the ones that do survive; being highly intelligent, social animals, parrots can suffer from ptsd after being ripped away from their homes like that. It's heart breaking .
It’s important to not blanket statement blame all smugglers though. It’s an awful business and incredibly exploitative on wildlife, but lots of people forget how exploitative it is on people too. Some smugglers are trying to desperately find a way to feed their families, and they may not have the luxury of finding another way to get it. There also needs to be a change in governments and attitudes to help provide a solution to the problem, the best of which would be ecotourism and education. It would mean the parrots are protected, people who need money get a very profitable work opportunity, and hopefully the demand for exotic birds would go down as people realise how awful the business is
Ok but the people in the area are suffering and being taken advantage of, they most likely are desperate for money to feed their families so it's natural that they would do anything they can. It was a couple, not brute smugglers. Did the parrots deserve it? No. Are the smugglers also victims, yeah.
Owning a wild animal should be forbidden all over the world. These birds live in a cage most of their life when adopted by humans. Unless they are well cared for but even then, this should not be allowed. They belong in the wild. They are not here to entertain humans. They often live longer than humans and are frequently abandoned.
My first parrot came to me this way back in the 1960’s. It was not well known in those days where our parrots came from. Back then instead of being returned to the wild those who survived being smuggled were put into quarantine. There they were then dosed with antibiotics to make them safe for importation. If they survived that, the babies were then sold to petshop chain stores. My Nannoo was the last of only two of her clutch that survived. The week before we bought her, her sister had been sold. Unlike a parrot born and breed among humans, bringing this wildling home, alone, to yet another foreign environment, sick from her digestion being nearly stopped by the antibiotics, traumatized her all over again. The terror, of the sound of duck tape coming off a roll (that first bound her as she was being smuggled), of large cages (where the only refuge was stuck in upper corners in quarantine), of strangers or anyone wearing gloves or anything that looked like a lab coat (the uniform of those who all too often gave pain), never left her. The scars on my hands have all mostly disappeared, the blood and tears were worth the soulmates we eventually became. But PLEASE I beg you, if you simply must have a parrot in your life, adopt one from rescue, or buy directly from a breeder. You will spare so many feathered lives and yourself unnecessary grief. Know that hand-raised birds who think from the egg that they themselves are just another kind of human will far more readily accept your family as their flock.
I was a child in the 1970s and we knew about this stuff. The truth be told, it sounds like you were aware of a lot of what went into bringing your fancy pet to your house, too. I think people knew back then, the difference is that people didn't care in the sixties. I have older siblings who grew up then and they told me what it was like.

It's sad because our comfortable lifestyle is making others in less developed countries get desperate to make any money that they are forced to do these things, where we as consumers win but everyone else looses.
