I always questioned that part honestly.The entire point of the chapter with Red Son is how hard it is.Wukong got beat up really bad by a kid,drowned and almost had a breakdown.True fire of Samadhi is just built different,the only fire that can burn him.The only possible answer is the immortality that he got later in the journey makes him somewhat immune to it.
