      Some of the most liberal estimates place patient zero's infection back to August of 2019. However I do think those estimates are too early. If that were true you'd have to then explain how the individuals of the whole world wouldn't notice that people were getting sick and family members dying from a strange illness until official reports of a new virus coming out of China nearly a half year later. I don't think people (as a generalization) are that stupid.
      Pushing that back to late October 2019 makes more sense and better lines up with those hush hush reports out of China regarding city wide lockdowns in mid November 2019 that still obviously came too late.

    Fun fact, the first scientific paper to include data on SARS-COV-2 (still called nCov19 back then) was about a computer model of coronaviruses trying to predict which mutations make them more likely to jump species and spread among humans. The researchers were just finishing up the paper using data from SARS, MERS, ect. when the outbreak in China became public and the sequence was released, so they just ran the new nCov19 through their program and added it in.
    Lots of folks knew a novel coronavirus pandemic was going to happen sooner or later. Sucks that it was sooner. Hopefully next time we'll actually respond better.

    Especially in relation to herd immunity, the important thing about the measles vaccine is that it doesn't just prevent disease, it prevents spread. The covid vaccines seemed, at least for a few months after vaccination, to reduce spread of pre-omicron variants by about a factor of 3, but if your basic reproduction number is bigger than 3, that's never going to get you to herd immunity, even if immunity didn't wane and the virus didn't mutate.

      Pretty sure it's the same condition as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome aka Myalgic Encephalitis which I've got but from a different virus - it's likely an autoimmune condition. I've had significant improvement treating my symptoms with Low Dose Naltrexone (4.5mg per night). Maybe 40% better. I'm now trying Aripiprazole (also low dose, at .25mg per morning) though it's too early to tell how it's working. There have been good early clinical trial results for both, I believe.
      Both drugs act similarly on the dopamine system to help regulate the immune system, but only at low doses - normal doses (10x as much or more) have different, on the label effects. I went off LDN for more than a month and started noticing worsening symptoms recently so I took the chance to try LDA a week ago. My next experiment may be whether the two low dose drugs together are helpful or just cancel out the effect by pushing over the low dose threshold on their effects on the dopamine system.

    There are other very important factors that you should mention. First, though sometimes viruses shift to more virulent less deadly variants, that is not always true. What is true is that the successful variants succeed, and that doesn’t mean less deadly necessarily. Second, though this virus has some repair mechanisms it still mutates wildly. There have already been proposals to name almost 100 subvariants of omicron. Those proposals were rejected. They do reflect the huge variation in Omicron strains. Third, the BA.2 strain now dominant in Denmark is quite different from the wildely circulating BA.1 strains and may well end up forming a back to back wave with BA.1. Fourth, SARS-CoV-2 has moved into other species. One variant moved into mice (anthroponoses) and then returned to humans (zoonoses). That is Omicron. And the omicron strains can and do infect rodents. Delta and previous strains have moved into weasels, mink and other mustelids. They also moved into deer and other ungulates. Cows, sheep, goats and horses are ungulates. SARS-CoV-2 is widespread in deer. They also moved into cats and related felines. All of these represent problems of their own. And they all are reservoirs that may and likely will reseed variants into the human population. SARS-CoV-2 is not going away. And other more deadly versions may arise at any time from other animals. We missed our opportunity to end the pandemic early in 2020. It will now be with us for the long haul. Fifth, omicron invades cells through a different mechanism from delta. It is because of this that upper respiratory infection symptoms are more prevalent. That may be giving the immune system several days head start in building antibodies before lung involvement sets in, reducing the severity of the lung issues; which have been the major killer. But clotting issues appear to be more important as evidenced by greater impacts to children. Also, the spread of the disease is rapid (R0 likely over 100 with no protection in a naive population), and the time to symptoms is shorter, combined with a longer time to death (~3 weeks). Humans are impatient. And as a result this led to a mistaken assessment that the disease is much less severe (mild). It is still severe. Sixth, South Africa reports data as it arrives and -back posts- data to when it occurred. As a result, the incidence and death curves rose after people mostly quit paying attention to them, wrongly assessing the severity based on the early data. Seventh, the clotting issues that the disease causes are severe when they occur. Eighth, though the vaccines are ill targeted to this variant, and they do not adequately prevent disease, they do greatly reduce its severity. And that too leads to a miss impression about the severity of these variants. Ninth, human immunity to RNA viruses wanes quickly - by design. This is because our bodies choose to forget rapidly mutating virus strains in favor of building new immunity to conserve precious energy and resources. Defenses against things that no longer exist isn’t much use and it is a large burden. Because of this we will require frequently updated vaccines and we will probably need new shots every three to four months. Tenth, this is nothing like the flu. The flu each year starts when birds carrying new variants migrate south spreading these through the air. It’s spread is aided by our moving indoors. SARS-CoV-2 is a much more transmissible virus spread human to human. And it is far more dangerous and deadly than all but severe pandemic flus. And much more …

    • @atrumluminarium
      @atrumluminarium 2 года назад +4

      Also, if we assume 2 variants identical in infectivity but one is more severe, the more severe one will eventually die out due to the fact that more people unable to leave their bed means less people are available to contact healthy people and transmit it. So a variant would need a significant boost in infectivity to make up for an increase in severity

    Looks like the Omicron variant has 7 spike protein mutations. Which is like... insane. Normally mutations happen maybe 1 or 2 at a time, and aren't always more helpful, but like. all 7 of them or something seem to increase its ability to hook on to our cells and make it easier for us to get it.

    I love that you included the Danish report, although it isn't peer reviewed yet. Believe it or not, but when the Danes found out that they were researching the effects of all the testing, they bashed the researchers for only doing it now (aka, they wanted research to be done before the data had been collected) and the vast majority of all commenters said that they just wanted all the testing to stop, despite the tests never having costed anything here in Denmark. You just schedule a time and meet up for a PCR test that by now takes 5 seconds and you're off again. The commenters still thought that to be annoying and I'm still absolutely dumbfounded how taking a mere 5 seconds out of your day to remain secure and safe, is too much to ask for. Especially when we still don't know whether this virus will mutate into something far deadlier, whilst also being far more contagious. I'll be saving this video to send to those Danes who still can't see the purpose with testing. Science isn't trying to scare anyone into thinking they're gonna die. That's the media. Science just tries to warn people and plead them to follow simple rules, as we won't get out of this mess faster, by allowing the virus to spread quicker by ignoring all guidelines.

I felt completely awful last Thursday. Like I got hit in the face with the flu. Body aches and headache and earache and eyes hurt and cough and overall awful. A week later I mostly just have lingering sniffles. My middle child also got a fever. She felt bad a couple days before recovering. My eldest child felt slightly under the weather for a day. My husband was positive but asymptomatic. And my youngest child didn't seem sick at all either. I'm thankful that we're recovering well. I really tried to avoid covid since I have some pre-existing conditions and was worried how it would effect me. I did have a j&j vaccine. But haven't been able to figure out where to get a booster. Also, the short incubation period and high transmission means that contact tracing has become a wild goose chase. 5:31 “…it’s different than, say, measles, where vaccination is effective at preventing disease in most people.”
    Can you do a show on herd immunity, sterilizing immunity in vaccines, etc.? It’s a very confusing topic.
    The scientists over at TWIV, for example, say that the only vaccine that might confer _actual_ sterilizing immunity is the one for HPV. Dr Brianne Barker, for example, says that, although vaccinated individuals are “immune” to, say, chicken pox, they actually _get_ the infection but the body’s immune response snuffs it out so quickly that the individual never knows they’ve been infected. Probably the scientists at TWIV, including Dr Barker, would help you with the basic framework.

    • @BlueFrenzy
      @BlueFrenzy 2 года назад +7

      The problem is that "sterilizing" is just an arbitrary immunity threshold that virologist use to catalog the vaccines. There's not such a thing as a "sterilizing" vaccine in what you imagine to be sterilizing. All the vaccines work the same way. Even for the measels vaccine.

      @@BlueFrenzy Thank you! Yeah, that’s why a show about it would be good. And if there really isn’t such a thing as a “sterilizing” vaccine, then what is herd immunity about? • @BlueFrenzy
      @BlueFrenzy 2 года назад +3

      @@jeff__w Herd immunity is more like a mathematical concept (that's why in real life is a bit more complicated than just reaching a threshold of immunes). Imagine the following: You have a virus that infects 2 people per infected on average. That means 2 people will infect 4. Those will infect 8, 16, 32... etc... It grows exponentially. Now imagine that half of the population is immune. It means that one person will spread the virus to 2 people, but on average, one of them will be immune. So one person will infect another. That one, another one... it grows linearly. So the herd immunity is basically the point where, because there's enough immune people that the virus cannot grow exponentially into a pandemic. Even if you get one infected person it's very unlikely this person will infect more than one, making it relatively easy to stop the chain. The famous 60% of immunity refers to the calculation of how many people needs to be immune in order to make an ilness with a spread rate of 2.5 to stop infecting more than 1 person on average.
      But there's a few caveats here. First, you don't really know the spread rate. It may be 2.5 as well as it may be 6. It changes over time depending on the conditions. Also, it assumes that the society is homogeneous and that the chances of finding an immune person is the same for everyone, but the society is heterogeneus and we forced a more heterogeneous society by vaccinating certain groups first. Lastly, even if you have a spread rate of 1 per infected, it works marvelous when you have no infected people (since if you add 1 infected to the group, it can on average infect 1 person). But if you have hundreds of thousands of infected people, they will, on average, infect another hundred thousand people. That's why some virologists recommends to consider herd immunity not only when you reach the theshold value, but also when the infection is out of the group.
      Complicated stuff, and probably someone with more knowledge will correct me here in some points.

I have one question, if making the Virus endemic isn't a positive Option in their opinion, how do we get out of this permanent Pandemie state? The solution just can't be, that we shut everything down once Dezember comes around. Doesn't there have to be a point where I becomes part of the normal flu season? As you pointed out, the flu also kills people every year, but that is a risk we as a society have accepted, like the dangers of cars? I would love to hear a different solution, if you have one.

Is it worth shutting down society and putting a lot of peolple in degraded quality of life indefinetly just to save a few lives. My opinion is people are going to die anyway. In our mad obssions to prevent every COVID death it is criminal to put a lot of people, esspecially youth and children, into extremely degraded quality of life indefinetly that for a lot of people life is no longer worth living. Yes, we need to come up with more creative solutions but we also need to get rid of our monomania of just preventing deaths and look at what is an acceptable balance between taking mesasures to prevent deaths and ensuring some basic essntial functions of a civilized society are allowed to continue.

      I think it's important to take a step or two back and look at all the facts and the way things are or have been transitioning. We know that children arent heavily impacted by covid and also recent tests shows that vaccinating children does little for them. We also know that people with existing health issues, overweight or old age are the most severe or high risk persons. I would suggest then in this case that a care plan to look after the most vulnerable while not locking down whole nations or imprisoning people would be the best approach. Yes while everyone can be a carrier, it would be better to educate everyone surrounding this so that extra measures and safe guards are taken. For example, mask wearing and distancing when meeting with older or vulnerable family members, focus vaccinating on those vulnerable groups as a priority, having all types of hospital and medical treatment available (example hydroxychloroquine) instead of doing what Australia has done and made hydroxychloroquine prescription an offence or against the law. "vaccinating those groups as a priority" could mean bumping down the younger, healthy people so that vulnerable people dont have to wait to be vaccinated.
      The virus does not treat everyone the same so we cannot impose the same rules for all.

    • @williamkeys5701

      I think that the point is that if the disease becomes endemic. We have another version of the flu, which in normal years kills around 60-70K Americans floating around. That is undesirable. It will also require regular boosters just like the flu shot which adds further economic costs.
      However, with the number of people who refuse to get vaccinated I think that this is the most likely scenario. I don't foresee shutting down the country every year but could see more masking and social distancing recommendations coming from health departments as various waves of the virus hit. We are at the place where we need to learn how to live with it because it's obvious that it's not going away and it's also obvious that the political climate isn't going to allow for shutting down of schools and businesses and "lockdowns" any longer.

    My child brought it home from Primary School and me and my wife were triple vaccinated and we caught it along with 2 of our other children so far. Just one of them hasn’t caught it yet and I’m not sure why.

    Just now getting over omicron. Had all but one symptom 😭. I couldn’t get an appointment anywhere after driving through three towns. The walk in had a five hour wait. It’s gonna be hard staying away from this variant- good luck.
    Also got vaccinated a year ago. Also also, my toddler was the only one who didn’t get sick out of all of my extended family.

      No booster... The booster is very important for Omicron if you don't have it you have the same chance of getting Omicron as someone unvaxxed

    WOuldnt more resistance to the virus increase the chances of mutations? I'm just thinking of an instance where cattle has been injected against something spread by ticks (sorry, cant recall what it was, but it was in South Africa), and over the years they have had to change the shot because the disease became more and more resistant and sometimes more dangerous too. Sort of.. catastrophe stimulates evolution, so why wouldnt that be the same in the virus world. Or am i skew here?

    Thanks for the information. As countries are gearing up for a 2nd booster, there's been talk of experts downplaying its effectiveness or in some cases saying frequent doses could interfere with the body's natural immune system for the worse. This is still early, but is there any concrete evidence to deter people from getting a 2nd booster?

    • @th3d3wd3r

      Do you happen to know what mechanism is potentially causing the vaccine to interfere with the natural immune system in a negative way?

    • @adityamozumdar383

      2nd booster is only effective until the 3rd one comes out. Then they will say the 2nd was useless and get your 3rd immediately. And it goes on..

      Mithridatism is the practice of protecting oneself against a poison by gradually self-administering non-lethal amounts. The word is derived from Mithridates VI, the King of Pontus, who so feared being poisoned that he regularly ingested small doses, aiming to develop immunity.
