Back again because I am finally going to start my install soon for our trip. My dad was from Canada and your accent sounded so familiar when I was a kid.
I've been looking for the replacement of antenna (same as your old one) for the same reason of installing a solar panel. Watching your video make the process much easier for me. Thanks for sharing.
I've been thinking about doing something with the antenna; thanks for this. If I could get the hockey games when we are on the road, I would be a happy camper!
Heck yea! Bay watch! Lol. Nice install, Ray. I just did this on a buddy’s camper cause a tree limb decided it wanted the old antenna. Not quite sure why trees watch TV though. Haha.
Wow - thanks for doing all the stuff i want to and show me how to do it!!! I've installed a digital thermostat and transfer box using your videos. Also, we have a 2010 Keystone Sprinter which is a bumper pull, but laid out almost exactly like yours. I look forward to future videos.
I installed one last spring. Works great. Had to replace it later on the summer as it hooked a telephone wire going out my driveway. Long story but I am waiting foe a cheque from the telephone co.as of Wed gone that it is settled. I hope
i appreciate your showing how you removed the old antenna mount. I tried doing the same on my RV months ago but gave up thinking that even though I had removed all the screws there must have been some other hardware holding the thing down. But now I see its just the adhesive and I should have tried getting under the mount like you did.
I have a built in antenna in our Casita travel trailer, but I’m thinking of getting an antenna intended for stick built homes. I think I can get a lot more stations, especially with a telescoping pole. Of course there are antenna size constraints.
I hope you have better luck with yours than I did with mine, Ray. Several years ago I replaced my batwing antenna with a KING Jack model and was very happy with it...at least initially. Then while driving down the interstate the upper portion broke off (and got stuck in the luggage rack). From what I could tell the plastic joint between the upper and lower part experienced a catastrophic failure. After that happened I had a Winegard Rayzar Automatic installed and have been using it since then.
@@LoveYourRV The separation could’ve happened due to multiple causes…a bird strike, for example…but I’ll never really know what happened. What I do know is that I stopped at a rest area on a sunny day, looked up and thought “hey, that’s weird, it looks like the TV antenna is gone.”, then went up on the roof and found the upper half of the antenna wedged in the roof rack at the rear end of the trailer. The Winegard Rayzar has had its own set of problems (the antenna kept getting stuck until I applied some silicone grease to help it turn easier) but hey, it works. I might replace it with the new 5G-compatible Air 360+ that is set to come out soon, though I’m in no hurry 😉.
When I cleaned off all the old stuff from my roof (hit the low bridge), I went with an omni-directional antenna. It works pretty good, but I think those that can be dialed in would be better. Honestly, if you are near a source, either works well. They are both line-of-sight, I believe, so the difference is probably minimal.
I did mine a few years ago, I like the signal meter, I think the old got a better signal .Mine had metal under the fiberglass roof, had to drill hole about 1/2 inch bigger.
From the brief glimpse, it looks like the board are laid out the same. Are the close enough that you could you swap the new board into the old housing and retain both the matching color plate and 12v port?
Could do, but I think I'm going to buy a plate that has a 12V port and a couple USB ports and install it beside this plate where they have the cable in/out for a sat box, which I don't need. Cheers, Ray
Hi ray I did the king jack replacement head I lost my bat wing going down the road the pins with the c clip I guess they came loose it flew off the roof a fella behind me said it nearly hit his truck anyway it does work better now lol
I know that boot came off where the cable comes down through the roof from my TV antenna and was getting water in. Got up there and filled it full of sealer. I must have some weird antenna. It works better down and the amplifier off. Even experimented with external rabbit ears. Not as good as what I was using, but still got some channels. I noticed how thin that antenna wire was on yours. Not much shielding, I would expect more. I'm guessing it works fine? I think that show was Night rider.
I think since its such a short piece of coax it doesn't matter much the thickness. In the TV info panel is said Baywatch but maybe they got it wrong. Cheers, Ray
That's odd, I would expect a directional antenna with a focused beam and mounted higher on the roof to do better. Maybe there is an issue with the antenna power or signal wiring in your RV. RV manufactures aren't know for quality work. ;)
Will be looking forward to the long term test. To be honest, I've read more negatives than positives on this antenna when compared to the old style batwing.
I've heard both good and bad at about equal amounts. I think basically all the RV TV antennas are all about the same. To improve upon them you have to get more of a residential type array. They are larger and people usually mount them on a tall pole. I often see them in long-term RV parks and that tells me folks have tried the RV antennas and found them not as good. So basically it's a trade-off between portability and best signal. This little antenna should do what I want which is to bring in some OTR TV now and again. The pros are it won't shade my solar panels and I don't need to remember to crank it down before traveling.
Oh my gosh I can not believe you posted this. I was camping the last five days and I my bat wing broke so I may replace it also. Another question is have you ever thought to use eterna bond tape in place of the self leveling caulk on the roof.
I didn't notice much difference, about the same I got before in this driveway, but this is the first place I've tried it in. Weather also makes a difference, so will have to use it for a while to get a feel for any difference.
Hi Ray. Replacing my antenna is something I have to do come spring. I have a similar style to your old one except it is a fixed antenna and doesn’t turn. Have you guys started counting down the days yet?
@@LoveYourRV ray, haven't had a chance to install the antenna yet. Rain, snow, cold, so when the weather gets better I will let you know when I get it done. Dennis
Have you ever noticed driving by a large antenna and it was in the very lowest part of the valley on the ground under a mound of leaves? Height is everything for VHF and UHF freq. because these bands work on a line of sight transmission path. If path is blocked by a building or a larger object (like a hood of a vehicle yes I have seen people mount antennas under the hood of a vehicle) the signal degrades. This is one of those times that newer isn't better. Height is everything and on top of that they have changed the spectrum frequency since these new fancy antennae were designed and unless these units have been updated they don't receive the newer spectrum. The batwing antennae are just too dumb to not receive. Strength meters and not worrying about forgetting about retracting it when moving are nice, but these are much more susceptible to being blocked by something as short as an a/c shroud.
On my old OEM 2010 batwing I had to add on a extra set of elements when things went digital. It was a small sized add-on array - amzn.to/3jVqxOL I think that's why they can now use the smaller size TV antenna due to the new digital frequencies using smaller antenna elements. I'm not sure how much a few feet of extra height makes. In this location it didn't make much difference. I'm already surrounded by houses. Cheers, Ray
Here is a link to the manual that explains the connections - www.rvupgradestore.com/v/vspfiles/assets/pdf/OA8500%20Manual.pdf The antenna on the roof has 2 connections. One goes to the signal level meter and the other goes down to the cable outlet with the power button. The outlet with the power button has 4 connections. Antenna in, Cable in, out to the TV, and an output for a second TV. Cheers, Ray

Looks like it may provide some extra support for keeping the tarp off my roof for winter. 🤣

I get more channels using a flat inside antenna than I do with the King Jack directional. No tear down required, just plugged directly into the tv.

What happened to part2 of the macerator? Did I miss it?
Been waiting for my brother in-law to finish up the connection port to the house, should be ready in a day or two

Is it better, equal to,or worse than the batwing? And, most importantly, Happy Birthday Ray!
Not totally sure yet, will have to test in a few other locations I've been to before, so far at this location its about the same. Thanks. :)

@@LoveYourRV thank you Ray. Im curious how well it works compared to your old Wineguard.
So far it's about the same but I've only checked at this one location so time will tell.
Hi Ray does this antenna come with mounting plate or do you hAve to get it separately?
Its a separate, optional item for people that already have an existing antenna mount that they need the extra area to cover.
Ok thanks
how many channels did you get with the old antenna
In that location around 8 or 10
How does the power compare between the Winegard and King Jack? More channels with one vs the other or better signal?
Nevermind, I read the first comment and got my answer.
👍 Thanks :-)
