Your hormones are fuuuuuuucked after giving birth, you're not getting any sleep, you're constantly drained/hungry/thirsty from breast feeding... She didn’t assault his mother, she defended herself. The mother hit her first. And yes it was „only“ the stomach, but she hit her! Plus she has a newborn, so she probably didn’t feel good physically anyways, and he didn’t say it she had a c-section or not. I'm sure they don't want to believe the brother would do something this hurtful, but my guess is that he just didn't think it through and got a little lazy or wanted to keep the prank going at first. I'm sure he realized he fucked up when family found up and so he came up with the bullshit story that OP did it. However, I feel like it's unrealistic to think he was initially being evil. I think he thought it was a fun prank, but knew it would be too hurtful to sister, so he did it behind her back, then he got lazy and didn't want to do the work of transporting the gnomes back when the fun part was over, or he wanted to keep the prank going, then there was no going back once family found out because he fucked up and didn't take care of things sooner. He should have come clean then, but his dumb prank fucked over his sister who has a dead SO with some kind of dark story, so it was easier to blame OP than take responsibility, because after all, it's not HIS fault OP threw them away. I looked up the last story out of curiosity to see if there had been any updates since recording: OP clarified that his mom BACKHANDED his wife's stomach and that the hit was LOUD ENOUGH FOR HIM TO HEAR ACROSS THE ROOM. This wasn't some playful little bop, as evidenced by her being doubled over in pain afterwards, and he still has the gall to say the mom "didn't hit her that hard". Not to mention other commenters on the post mentioning how stretched out and thin the abdominal muscles get during pregnancy, and that there's a chance the mother may have been wearing rings during the slap and may not be that small of a woman herself, and how the wife was doubled over in pain after but was still forced to walk around to pack for herself and the baby and then out to find the two of them somewhere to stay.
In short, OP really doesn't deserve another chance. His whole "redemption" is him going "but here's why my trauma brain made me do this" and not really considering what his wife went through or her own trauma.

Right, he absolutely does not deserve another chance. I didn't think it was fair to keep saying that the wife assaulted her mother-in-law, when she simply responded to having been assaulted. It's absolutely awful for him to think he was justified at all. I don't like it when people take the stance of, "violence is never the answer," so hard as to not understand self-defense properly, or the fight response from adrenaline after having been assaulted.

"Husband has allowed his mother to verbally abuse me and kicked me out of our home after she escalated to physical abuse and I tried to defend myself," sounds like more than reasonable grounds for divorce. 1:27:30 after giving birth your belly is sensitive. And its especially sensitive if you have a C-section. If this wife had to have a C-section i 100% understand why she took the nuclear option. If the MIL slapped her belly hard it could have caused a lot of pain. And then just the comment "you could afford to skip a meal" she just gave birth and is breast feeding, she actually can not afford to skip a meal. She needs that nutrition to 1. heal from pregnancy and 2. be able to make milk. If your not eating and drinking enough it directly effects your milk production. This MIL is unhinged. The obese niece could have afforded to skip a meal by MIL logic. There is definitely an emotional incest situation here and MIL views the DIL as competition.

For the last story, I just gotta say, his wife did not "assault" his mother. His mother assaulted his wife, and his wife responded, probably without even thinking. The adrenaline likely sent her into a fight response. She was hit hard. I don't care that the man saw his mom get punched. He saw his wife get assaulted first. If you are being physically hurt with violence, sometimes violence is how to protect yourself unfortunately. But I don't think it's even that deep. It's not like she took time to think about throwing that punch; it just happened in response to what was done to her. The fact that he didn't stand up for his wife in that moment speaks volumes about his character, and his wife saw that.
I don't know, I just don't like how much talk there was about how shocking it would be to see your spouse assault your mom, when that's really not what happened, and is a statement that ignores all of the facts of the situation.
As far as the husband being sorry, he better be. He needs intense therapy if he at his big age is still using his childhood as an excuse to allow his mom to behave badly and not to protect his wife and newborn baby. He kicked them out with no regard to where they would go or if they would be okay. He only wanted to take care of his emotional needs. He needs so much therapy.

Someone in the comments brought this up and I’d like to riff on it - the husband in the last story’s response shows a lot of unresolved trauma that could be addressed with therapy. That said, his trauma response came BEFORE his dad instincts kicked in to protect his baby. As the wife, I can imagine that even if OP owns up to his mistake and shows remorse, it’s likely still hard to accept the fact that he would do that to her and their child, regardless of the reason.

I have given her much grace because blending families is hard and kids can be brutal, but when I returned home when we lost her dad (my step dad of 22yrs), I realized that she is still the same bullly she’s always been, and there was no need to extend any further grace. People who seem to think the first story can't be real clearly don't know the statistic about a person being most vulnerable and at risk of physical & mental harm at the hands of a partner during pregnancy. It's a literal crime statistic, the whole deal of the pregnancy causing weight gain and men suddenly finding their partners 'unattractive' and also upset when their wives/girlfriends/etc. aren't as sexually available as they were previously. The fact that this guy is so fixated on the weight gain and calling his wife "couch potato" and saying she's letting herself go might not be in dangerous territory yet but those are as glaring red flags as you can get. I honestly hope that woman got away from OP, he sounds like a nightmare and would definitely not be providing even the most basic support to her as soon as their child was born.

I think with the last story, it’s a super shitty situation with trauma on both ends, but I think the husband is worth another chance IF he decides to cut off his mom. I totally understand if the wife decides to follow through with divorce though.

Okay for the last story. The mother having been abused in her previous marriage does not give her the excuse to be abusive in turn. OP seems to have been a little too enabling of her behavior because of it and he really dropped the ball. He failed his wife big time by kicking her out when she was already in a vulnerable place, I get that he has his own trauma but that doesn't mean ignoring someone else's. Even if he's honestly remorseful, that's like the least he can do, his wife is not obligated to trying to stay or making it work when he managed to break all her trust so thoroughly.

Story 4 I have absolutely no sympathy for her one even if she hadn't treated her sister badly in the past. If you live in a glass house, do not throw stones. That sister has no room to talk 2. You're living with your sister rent free. Do not bite the hand that feeds you.
And lastly, you're just making yourself. Look bad to do that. Because you're just showing how well your sister did while pointing out the fact that you didn't do well.

Story 5: this cracked me up because I’ve been through it, minus the violence 😂 my in laws were visiting and we ordered food from my favourite restaurant. When we got home, I had an endometriosis flare up so was in bed and couldn’t eat dinner. Mil was fussing over me, trying to put a cold wet wash cloth between my legs and everything…I had to get my husband to remove her from our bedroom. Anyway, I woke up the following day and was about to take my dinner left over from last night to work for lunch. She had given it to my brother in law to take home for his girlfriend who wasn’t even at the dinner! It was my food, that I paid for! And she gave it to someone who wasn’t even involved! The girlfriend later told me that she couldn’t eat it because it was too spicy for her so she threw it away! Literally furious! Not at the girlfriend, at mil!

As someone who is brown and not living in the US i have a few things that always make me so confused about the whole "don't wear white" "don't upstage the bride" on weddings there.
Like here, everyone puts on their best dress for a wedding which is usually our own choice of color etc unless their is a specific request (or if all cousins/ friends are planning a theme etc) the bride's dress is always (at least almost always) way heavier in embroidery and the jewelry (also bride specific pieces which only brides wear culturally on their wedding day) and again most of the brides have flowers in their hair and the shawl part of the dress (again embroidered) covers their head a little so like no one is gonna mistake anyone else for the bride even with many many people wearing similar color as the entry of the bride, the ceremonies everything already puts a huge spot-light on the bride and the groom.
yes, we also do still have people who re-wear their own wedding dresses (styled differently and with lighter jewelry) and i don't think it is possible to upstage the bride at an indian/ desi wedding (even if the bride chooses a simpler dress) just because of the way desi weddings are designed, like by the time the bride has time to walk around meeting people everyone has seen her on the "stage" (or where ever the ceremonies are taking place) part of the wedding and know.
Now, have i seen some ill-intentioned people trying to dress up over the top and steal the show? yes. But they almost always fail to do so (which i also think even in the US people can only ill-intentionally try to up-stage the bride and fail) get looked at as if they are crazy. We actually get elders almost telling people off for looking too simple as they think we should dress up to show our happiness and support for the couple.
but like what i know about western weddings... the bride still walks down the aisle and has everyone looking at her... maybe at the reception there could be confusion? and i am all for not doing things that are culturally not considered very nice (wearing white for example) i just don't understand how we get to hear so many stories of dressing being an issue. like, what was op supposed to do in the first story? she got the dress approved by the bride and the groom.

What isn’t talked about enough is the “mean girl” culture that exists in the US, particularly with young women. Think the generation that grew up watching teen dramas on tv, movies like Mean Girls, reality tv shows where women fight a lot. It’s an unspoken spite for her looking beautiful or attention-grabbing at her wedding, jealousy, but also I think a little bit of racism… To me, the whole reason she got “attention” was something normal, people interact with each other at weddings and compliment each other, because it’s normal to put effort into looking nice. What some people take to another level is the idea that “the bride has to be the most beautiful in the room” which, in many reddit stories, comes out in stories of brides asking their bridesmaids to dye their hair “normal” color from something rainbow, removing piercings, heck there was even one bride who didn’t want the groom’s cousin who was a wheelchair-user to attend the wedding because of “attention” reasons. It’s all based on jealousy and it’s surprisingly normal and, in a way, cultural. To see more examples, just look up “bridezilla reddit stories” here on youtube 😅

There's nothing to understand. A white dress is to this culture what bride specific jewelry is to yours. Using one as a guest is saying I don't consider this a wedding, I don't respect the bride, not only I don't care about your celebration, I openly go against your wishes for the day. It's always ill-intended. The couple has the right to set the dress code that makes them feel more special. If a guest goes against that, whether or not they aim for confusion, whether or not they achieve that, it's disrespectful
Nobody is saying that OP upstaged the bride, she checked twice, amicably, that her dress was okay for the dress code. That is what she was supposed to do

    • @albertaair
      @albertaair 6 месяцев назад +2

As a North American, I find the whole thing a bit silly. You're right--NO ONE is upstaging the bride no matter what they wear. Nobody who's at the wedding is confused about who the bride is. It's a silly rule, and usually the people who make a huge fuss about it are either insecure or controlling or something...

Not necessarily. I am not american but from the Western world. It is from the Cold War, so everyone who was in the "western" side of the iron curtain, plus what was formerly DDR.
Although I would argue that some other countries who were previously on the side of Soviet Union are now "up to Western standards," even if I personally don't like the fact that we still divide the world like that. 😊

Trauma brain is a hell of a thing. He seeing his mom being punched probably caused flash backs to her being beaten by his father, and as said, protective. Trauma brain doesn't let you think logically at all. He understands his behavior but he also needs to see a professional. If the truama is willing to push out his wife and child. He sounds like a good guy he just needs help

I agree with this, because his actions before that were good, he did it right, but unfortunately that isn’t going to cut it if he can’t put his wife and child over his trauma. He has the option of leaving the house instead of letting his wife get through all her packing and leaving with their child. There was time to process what he was doing and switch over to him going out, if nothing else. I feel bad for him, but he essentially showed this new, emotionally exhausted mother that he can’t support her in her own traumatic moment and she has the right to decide she wants out.
p.s. I actually really hope they could work it out and go to counseling together. She needs some support system outside of him, so that if he does break down again, she has someone to come hold her together while he copes. He is TA, but he looks like he can be redeemable and hopefully step up as a father first and foremost.

@guadalupemontoya5164 exactly, it sounds like he knows his trauma, he knows his triggers, he just doesn't know how to handle it properly. It actually sounded like regression of a child screaming "get away from me" whereas, as an adult we know to remove ourselves if we are triggered. He sounds fully redeemable as long as he gets the help he needs so he can think a little more logically in triggering situation

Damn that last story was intense. I understand needing space but not kicking her out. He should’ve been the one to remove himself, but maybe this also makes me think he’s not ready to be a dad - he’s not thinking about the baby to the degree that he should be, and perhaps that made it even clearer to her that she should leave. I understand also him and her both needing to process what happened… and I’m sure the mom is in shock, too. That punch sounded really intense, but I understand there’s trauma on all sides. I hope they can each find their path to healing, perhaps he and his mom can mend their relationship somehow and each go to therapy, but I do think it’s the best decision to at least separate as a couple and each person heal on their own, and maybe someday some kind of co-parenting situation can be figured out. I hope it’s a learning lesson for her that she deserves better in a future relationship, and for him to see the signs of this behavior and be able to stop this from happening in any future relationships. I do think they can both prevent this from happening again, but for that they’d have to not be in a relationship anymore.

Story 4: as an older sister who is jealous of her little sister, OP is not the asshole. My little sister is prettier, skinnier, more stylish and cooler. I get really jealous that I don’t look as good as she does….. HOWEVER, I recognize that it’s my self-esteem that causes that, not my sister. I always hyper her up and compliment her. I have always defender her and I always will. I recognize that I need to make changes so that I can be happier with myself. I would NEVER bring pictures of her past and make fun of her. Op’s sister needs some therapy and self-awareness. There’s no excuse to treat your sister like that.

I just wanted to say thank you for your self-awareness and decency towards your sister.
My older sister was absolutely venomous to me once I hit a certain age, & unfortunately I had to live with her for years through middle/high school. She was a fucking bully, and openly admitted it was because she envied me for superficial "advantages" I had.
It took a long time to heal the damage she did to my self-confidence. I still have days where I look in the mirror & can hear her body-shaming in my head.
We haven't spoken in a decade, and I don't have any urge to change that.
      All that to say:
You're a great big sister. She's lucky to have you. ❤
You seem like a lovely person, so please also don't get hung up on comparisons for your own good. Be kind to yourself, too. Your light might shine in a different color, but I guarantee it's just as bright.

As someone who has breastfed for well over a year, it makes you INSANELY hungry. its an unfixable type of constant hunger ESPECIALLY IN THE NEWBORN STAGES!!!! She had every right to knock mil on her ass. Not to mention all the other hormones and overstimulation of having a bunch of people in your house and having to feed a baby from your own body. ABSOLUTELY NOTTTT. Husband is the worst, he should marry his mommy.

The first story with the pregnant women and husband on the hike is crazy. Honestly, I'd probably leave my partner if he tried to make we go on a 3 mile hike while I'm pregnant. He also comments about how it's steep in some areas and that's concerning. It's dangerous, if she falls there's a high chance she could lose the baby because they probably aren't near a hospital or would be able to get here to a hospital in time. Exercise is great while your pregnant, my aunt used to talk walks in the afternoon while she was pregnant, but she also had fairly easy pregnancies. All pregnant women are different.
