  • What's it like living in California? Well, you have about 8 different regions in the state, and each one is completely different from one another.
Are the stereotypes of California true? Probably. This video uncovers everything you need to know about living in California.
We talk about the sports, weather, cost of living, food, politics and what people in California need to afford to live here. Also covered are some California stereotypes.
In the end, you'll wonder why people like California so much, and understand why people are leaving the Golden State in droves.

Our goal is to combine recent data, fun videos, and thoughts about local culture into bite-sized snacks of shareable information. We call it bite-sized regional infotainment. We try to paint a picture of what’s happening in a region based on “Friday Night Science” - how’d you argue at a bar. To do that, we gather data from around the web to help determine a wide array of factors about where you live, things like safety, desirability, and culture.

My California dream from the 1980s: free college, beautiful girls, surfing, easy-going lifestyle. I wanted to move there, get my degree and a good job, find a beautiful girl and start a family. Maybe own a home in a sleepy coastal town.
My California reality: 1989, age 25 I moved to Imperial Beach, crashed on my brother's couch. He was in the Navy. I got a crappy job in and office in downtown San Diego. My brother was sent out to sea and I lost my place to sleep. I rented a single room in a house full of hippies in Mission Beach. Drugs and crime were everywhere around me. I stayed clean. Found out college wasn't free (Darn!). I applied for student loans. I attended San Diego City College and worked my ass off. I sold my ratty truck from Nebraska and bought a corroded motorcycle so I could park in San Diego. My mother passed away back home. I couldn't afford to fly home to see her before she died. I became depressed. I rode my motorcycle everywhere: up Highway 1 to the red-woods, down Baja, to the Grand Canyon on a hotter-than-hell 4th of July in 1992. There was a prison escapee on the loose in the Grand Canyon, and I got stopped by multiple cops. They caught him. I was super lonely. I wasn't the only one, though. We were all struggling. I was inspired by some of the people I met. I ended up in the ER trying to learn to surf. I got into UCSD. Got a girlfriend. She was beautiful and smart! I was Pre-med. Got into medical school, in Kansas. My GF wanted to stay in California. She later married a very nice woman. I went to their wedding. I went to medical school and became an ER doctor.
California was nothing like I thought it would be. I was there six years. There were some good times, but it was also a very hard life for a poor student from the working class. California gave me what I needed, not what I wanted. The Californians I knew were some of the hardest working people I've ever known. Were the people beautiful? Yes, but not in the way I had dreamed as a kid. Mainly I met good people dealing with a whole load of miserable living conditions. It required hard work just to live in the expensive, crowded areas around San Diego.
Now: 30+ years later, my daughter is about to start college, KU, Pre-law. My wife wants to retire in Florida. I still dream of California from time to time.

I can say some for me too. I'm from Alabama, my first 18 years. Never made friends. Never fit in. Family is just moocher hillbillies. Just the truth. Moved to Michigan in 2015 when I was about mid-18. We moved alot when I was younger, but only because we were broke all the time (but it gave me a slight sense of adventure that I didn't really understand to later take place as a bigger hobby for myself haha)
Everything is more expensive in Michigan, kind of, but the pay is insanely better than Sheffield/Muscle Shoals, AL. I first worked at a diner as a dishwasher. In Michigan, I worked mostly factory jobs which are abundant in MI and a tire shop. I felt like I couldn't handle alot of the problems arising and I hated the snow. So, sometime after I crashed a Trans Am into my brother's neighbor's house and got my license back, I moved back to AL only to find myself working 2 jobs to still keep up the payments on my MI truck, sleeping on my Gramma's couch for 6 months, and driving around my immature, lazy, moocher relatives to the store.
Of course I felt something wasn't right. Yeah, I basically ran away from my problems in MI and put my life on pause by going back to AL. But I did learn that just because it's where I'm from doesn't make it home. And just because I accomplished more somewhere else doesn't make it home, either. So I moved back to MI in June 2020 to take on MI again and things started changing for me mentally. I was raised in AL, but I grew up in Michigan where I learned to deal with my own problems, met some good people, developed social skills, athletic and music skills. I've had 12 vehicles and only one hasn't let me down. That's because it was a mid-life crisis death trap with everything else and in 2019 I even tried to enlist in the infantry (failed the vision test)
But turns out, I didn't need all that. My way of life is just as its always been. I just had to get rid of the toys (addicted to hotwheels), games, sportscars and ego to see it again. In my latest video, it's basically me having a me day and it's just good to be me. (^~^)
I still think about the weather, basketball, fitness scene, car scene, and Mattel when I think about California. Maybe after I pay my truck off (soon)(only debt), I could manage an apartment there. But that's just an idea. My ultimate goal isn't California. My ultimate goal is to be a dad. (I didn't have a dad around, but doesn't mean I can't be one.) Make my own decisions! Right now, I have one person in my life that is so significant, and taking our time, we make some choices together. And I'll stick with that right now.

I lived in the desert part of California for about 9 months some years ago,, and I actually went back to travel the rest of the state last summer. I honestly think the California desert(s) is just my favorite place in general. It’s very pretty if you forget how empty and unpopulated it is. Like I will say that the closest shopping center was almost a two hour drive away from my house but we got to drive though a ton of windmill farms which I thought was pretty cool tbh. Joshua tree and the Mojave desert are really beautiful... and honestly I never would’ve thought I’d get to see a roadrunner in my life but I always saw them drinking out of our pool

I'm originally from Maryland (D.C. area) and lived in Europe too but then grew up in the Phoenix area. I spent a lot of time in L.A., went to UCLA, lived there in my early twenties for four years and then moved back to Phoenix. I had a great time working in TV and film and loved the hills and oceans and topography but the traffic was a joke. The freeways are large winding parking lots for most of the day. The cost of living is way too expensive; rent & real estate costs 2-3 times of what it does 5 hours by car away in the Phoenix area which is a big city (fifth largest in the nation and fastest-growing city -- and county). Quality of life in Phoenix is so nice though it is getting bigger and bigger. Still affordable though and a great place to live. We don't have to worry about earthquakes, round-the-clock traffic, over-the-top taxing and fees, and pay much less for insurance, gasoline and even groceries. The freeways are newer and more efficient and parking is always simple. To compare I'd say Phoenix is set up somewhat like the NW San Fernando Valley. Even much of the exact same items at Costco and Fry's (Kroger) in AZ costs about 20-50% more at Costco or Ralph's (Kroger) in CA. L.A. can be a sweet and fun place to live for the rich (and famous), but even celebrities usually keep homes elsewhere.

I've lived in the SF Marina for over 30 years and I'm seeing more and more vacant storefronts in the Fillmore and Union Street area. And the trend is creeping into the Chestnut Street commercial corridor.
The vacant storefront phenomenon is not just in S.F., it's the entire Bay Area and Southern California.....
And every big city in the U.S.
Nevertheless, even more retail space is being built. How many times have you heard the news media bragging about how some developer is building 100s of units of housing over 1000s of square feet of retail space. In fact, the current real estate market resembles the ominous conditions that preceded the 2008 melt down that required a $Trillion federal bailout.
Reminds me of the old saying "Insanity is doing the same failed thing over and over again and expecting to get different results".

And now I'm really glad you pointed out that website on all the information you need to know to leave California for a much more affordable State because I've been wanting to leave California for years now and it's just getting harder and harder because it just keeps getting more and more expensive.
And I've never heard of Baker's or Tommy's. Of course I'm well aware of In-N-Out Burger since they are all over this state and I like them a lot but I actually like Wendy's more and Carl's jr. More, but I definitely really enjoy El Pollo Loco. There actually isn't a Del Taco in Sonoma County at all. Precisely! Perfectly worded and dead on. I grew up in Santa Barbara (Central Coast) through the 70s and 80s, so remember the President Carter administration, with its crushing oil embargo and gasoline rationing, as well as the Reagan governorship. Nearly as soon as Reagan left to become President, the state just got worse and worse. First with overcrowding, then rising taxes and the insane tax-and-spend political belief that you can spend your way into prosperity. By 1985 it was all seriously going sideways, never to recover. Indeed, now, when I visit from out of state, it is absolutely like a third world country, and I know from first hand experience having lived in Guatemala. Nowadays, Santa Barbara is like LA, with gang rivalries, the violence that comes with it, and is just a prettier more exclusive/expensive locale. It used to be so amazing and wonderful, virtually ALL of CA, but endless over-development put the final nails in for good. At least for SoCal.

I left CA in 2001 (because of rising costs ) came back in 2005. I was miserable back east. I went into a depression living in Nashville TN. It was also just as expensive (for me- i was renting in both states) to live in TN. I'm happy to be back and agree CA isn't for everyone - same as TN. I'm not knocking either btw.

@@landajimmy Anywhere in Tn you’re probably within an hour of a state or National forest or park. California is pretty in some places sure but east of the sierras it’s a desolate desert or your forests are burned from wild fires. Even better is that in TN nature is free, there’s no where as many homeless people, we don’t have forest fires, or earth quakes, or droughts. Tennessee is no where near as expensive as California that’s a straight up lie too.

I'm a New England native but spent most of my life in California: Vallejo, Suckramento (thankfully left at 17!), Tahoe/Truckee, San Diego, Hermosa/Redondo/Torrance/Playa del Rey/N. Hollywood (mercifully brief time in the Valley), Santa Barbara, Half Moon Bay (where I cannot afford to purchase the home I once owned there), San Mateo Peninsula, Marin, and...ugh...Susanville. I concur with you on so much. I do not miss the 405 at all (especially when it once took me over five hours to get from N Hollywood to Newport Beach because it rained). I loved living at the beach in the 70's and 80's. Ditto for Marin. Tahoe was paradise until the massive influx of Silicon Valley folks fleeing the Bay Area and buying up property and skiing midweek while working remotely). I could no longer live comfortably in cali unless I moved to a s***hole...Susanville was bad enough, but there are many places that are even worse (Boron, anyone?). So for now, I'm in Reno, which is also getting more and more crowded and pricey. I still have my heart set on Washington; it's super expensive but I'm willing to sacrifice for the chance to move back to arguably the most beautiful state with an ocean!
