The engine is notorious for excessive oil consumption. I'm currently getting my engine replaced with 284000 miles.
Install an oil catch can $30 and clean the intake valves every 30k, but monitor the oil level every 1000 miles.

I noticed both links you provided only list the 4 cyl. engines. Mine is a 2014 Sorento 3.3l that I bought used with only 86k miles earlier this year, and mine just did the same exact thing you described at 93k miles. I noticed you said your was the 3.3l also did Kia say those were covered under the recall too?

This has just happened to our 2013 Optima....engine bearing knock suddenly developed. We were one month past our 7 year warranty, 131,000kms. To their credit, Kia is going to replace, at no cost to us, with a new engine and have loaned us a car while ours gets repaired. Very happy.

    THANK YOU!
This was an extremely helpful video. I just purchased my used 2011 kia optima a few days ago, I paid roughly $5000. A few days after I bought it the check engine light came on for a bad crankshaft sensor (P0014) I replaced the sensor and the light went off, but after replacing the sensor we started the car up and there was a HORRIBLE sound. It sounded as if metal was grinding or slapping each other. I plugged the code reader back in and error code P1326 came up, I researched this error code and came upon this video and a lifetime warranty for the engine. I was extremely relieved when I found this video and the document. I thought I was out of $5000, and to be honest, I did almost cry. I called Kia after my research. They paid for a tow truck to come get it, and then paid for my rental car. A few days later they told me they are going to be replacing my engine and that I should expect to receive my vehicle by the end of next week!

      - I really enjoyed reading your comment and knowing I was able to help you gain some peace of mind in times of worry and frustration. Your comment made me feel glad I posted this video to help many that may be going through the same thing. I am happy to hear KIA is fixing your car at no cost to you and that you didn't get scammed for $5000 by the person who sold you the car. That's messed up that they sold you the car like that knowing more than likely that the car had an engine issue and didn't tell you about it. I hope the car runs well when you get it back and would love to hear back from you on how the car is running after sometime after it has been fixed. Thank you so much for watching and for leaving your wonderful comment and your experience and story. I really do appreciate it.

DruManjiDrew No problem! I will let you know when I get it back. I expected to get it back last Friday but they keep telling me different dates, which is extremely frustrating. Although I do want everything to be ‘right’ on the car, so I’m not trying to rush them. I did figure out the car only had one previous owner, then someone ended up on a used car lot. I bought it a week after they put it in their lot. So to me, with it only having one owner and it getting a new engine, this is a new car. Lol.

Had the exact same issue for the exact same price. Brought a 2012 Kia Optima 85k mikes for 4800$. I literally recommended this car to every one after 6 months of driving it. I thought for the features the look and the price I got a steal. After a year my engine seized up. I to was heart broken thinking I was out of 5 grand but then found the recall threads. Luckily I was approve for a new engine and after weeks and weeks of waiting I got my Kia back. The next week the transmission went. I paid a 1000$ to get the rebuilt transmission. Now I thought I basically got a brand new car with a new engine and a rebuilt transmission for a 1000$. A week after this now the engine problems return. I just dropped my Kia back to the dealer yesterday and now they are telling me the wait is even longer because my engine problems are not as severe. The first time I drove the car until the engine no longer would turn over. This time I thought to be more cautious and return it as soon as the first engine shut off. Eventually the car turned back on after a few hours but now I’m out of a car and I’m currently waiting for the results. Will never buy Kia again !

A! Bro thank you for your endeavor to try to help other people with your valuable information just for your information I’m an owner of a 2014 Kia Optima LX. on or about January 14th I started having serious issues with my engine. I knew it was time to make an appointment with Kia. I had knowledge of the engine recalls because I received a letter.
So I made an appointment, they run a test on it The next day the guy called and said my engine was done.
The test failed. I had 129,000 miles on my car. That was not an issue whatsoever. The guy was very nice very attentive, put me in one of their brand new Kia cars to drive. While my engine was being replaced and said we will call you when we’re done replacing your engine.
It took them about three weeks. To engine replaced from the manufacture.
The warranty that I received was one year with Kia dealership that did the work and after that the manufacture will continue to warranty the engine as long as I own the car.
The car runs great!!! all this at NO COST to me.

Just happened to my 2014 kia sorento, bought it used a couple years ago and has 164,000 miles on it. It was inspected and was determined it was under the recall. Total replacement at no cost to me. It was running a P1326 code I believe in relation to a knock sensor I think. My local mechanic researched it and told me about it so I contacted kia and they checked it. The Lord sure is good!!

Thank you for the video. We have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that we bought used for our daughter for college. We purchased it exactly a year ago. It had about 75k miles on it when we purchased. It now has 91k miles on it.
The other day she calls and tells me while she was driving she heard a knocking sound coming from the engine and experiencing a loss of power. Good thing she was close to home. She drove it home and called me. I get home from work check it all out and before I start the car I check the oil and there was very little oil on the dipstick. I fill it with two qts of oil and it’s still knocking. I add two more qts and the knocking stopped.
I drove it around for a little bit and at first everything seemed ok. I drove it around a second time just to make sure and give it a little more acceleration but the knocking came back and felt the loss of power. Drove it back home check the oil and there was little to no oil on the dip stick again. No visible leaks anywhere so I don’t know what is going on or where that amount of oil could’ve gone with no signs of any leaks.
I had it towed to my local mechanic a guy that I know and he checked it yesterday. He said when he turned it on it immediately started knocking and that the damage has already been done. He said he didn’t need to drive to know that. He said there is a really good possibility that the car will need a new engine.
He’s going to check it out some more today and let me know what he finds before I take to our local Hyundai dealer. I already know that Hyundai is going to give me the runaround so I’ve been mentally preparing myself for the circus and excuses they’ll give me.
I’ve been trying to get as much info as possible for this same issue we’re having. I see that there was a class action lawsuit and a recall for these problems. Hopefully fingers crossed Hyundai will honor the recall regardless even though we are not the original owners. We’ve had all the oil changes current on it this past year and no problems with the vehicle since we bought it a year ago.
For the most part the car ran pretty good. Just this one big issue happened the other day. Wish me luck!

The local dealer in that city was very helpful, looked after us very well and provided a no-cost equivalent courtesy car good for the duration of our repair down time. What more could you ask for. They have treated us very well. I did have all our scheduled maintenance done at dealerships as far away as 2700 km (1700 mi) from home. I have the same engine and mine seized at 116k miles just two days ago . They’re replacing the engine at no cost. I disagree with the comment of Kia’s being horrible cars; on the contrary no other car company trusts their engine to guarantee up to 10 years or 100k miles from day one of purchase. Prior to my engine dying I had literally no engine issues whatsoever. Yes this is a major problem, but once it was identified, they have taken steps to rectify the problem to the extent of providing owners with new engine blocks if needed. While it sucks to have your engine seize, as I did, I am happy that they stepped up to fix it at no cost even after 100k miles. Having that 10 yr 100k mike warranty is a huge reassurance so you are not strapped with a ridiculous repair bill.. more of a reason to buy a Kia in my opinion.

Most of the failures have been on 2012 2.4L engines used in various vehicles. Yesterday I had the ECU update performed on my 2016 Sorento 2.0L turbo. Talked to the service manager and technician, they showed me several vehicles in for engine replacement. All were 2.4L, Kia is taking care of the problem with out any hassle. Was told they haven’t had any 2016 2.0L turbo’s in for engine failure. After the ECU update was installed on my Sorento I now have a lifetime warranty on my engine. Not good for those effected by this problem for sure, but at least they are giving customers new engines and great warranties for peace of mind.

I just want to say Thank You!!! After watching your video and making a call to the Kia number you provided... they asked me to take my car in because the vin was in fact registered as being in the recall list. I took it in, the tech gave it 2-3 good revs, and then 💥.... engine dead!! It didn’t even sound as loud as it had earlier in the day either. (Almost sounded like it was better lol) Anyway, they approved the repair, and paying for my rental as well. I’ve had nothing but exceptional customer service from them, for now at least...but I honestly don’t expect any different seeing as they had no problem owning up to it once the vin was given. Again, thank you!! Because all I thought was, my engine was going to crap out soon, and I sure af didn’t have the money to pay for it, blah blah blah...... but God is good, and so are you, and so is Kia. Lmao.

I had a 2011 Optima SX with the turbo 2.0. I got a recall notice, had it tested, and it passed. That was in 2018. In 2019, while driving 700 miles from home, my engine light began flashing and the engine went into "limp mode", not able to drive more than 20 mph or so, and the engine started knocking. I had to have it towed 100 miles to a Kia dealership, where they said they needed to replace the engine, which was on back order. It took 7 weeks, but I got it shipped to me, at their cost. I did have to fight a bit for all the money of the towing and rental car costs, but they did cover it in the end. I did end up with a complete engine, not just the short block. I still am driving the car, would love a new one, but am hesitant.

I’m a Kia tech. They didn’t just replace the block. You got a re-man long block. Therefore block, head, oilpump, oil pan, valve cover, water pump, thermostat housing, and all internal engine components. The warranty is 15 years unlimited miles starting from the day of purchase. Also you do not pay more for the 100k warranty. If you bought the vehicle new it comes standard with 5/60 bumper to bumper, and 10/100 power train.

We traded a 2013 Optima EX with the 2.4 a few years ago with an easy 22k miles and first oil change at 1k as with all my new cars/engines. I did receive a few notices about the recall and free dealer inspection. Never had a single issue. Traded it for a 2017 Cadenza SXL 3.3 which is a great car so far, very smooth engine. Just picked up a 2016 Forte 5 with the 2.0 for a 3rd car/work vehicle with just 23k miles. I did buy an extended bumper to bumper though just incase. So from what I've read here, that the Korean built engines are not part of the engine failures/recalls? I just picked up a decibel meter to start keeping records in possible changes when I open the hood ever so often. Thanks for all the comments! It's been an informative read!

But I did hear this intermittent rattling from the driver's side about June 2016, 3 months after I purchased it. I've had it checked out multiple times only for the service techs to not be able to reproduce the noise. As we speak, the noise hasn't resurfaced in a long time and I hope it never returns but I always have this lingering fear that my engine will fail, or worse, my car will catch on fire, as there have been reports of these vehicles bursting into flames. I may either trade it in for a V6 Sorento since those haven't had any reported issues, or I might just got with another auto brand all together.

Interesting that the new 2019 Accent with the Gamma engine boasts a 7% power reduction, along with much improved fuel efficiency!, I wonder if this is Hyundai attempting to avoid more issues? I'm sure other people have already commented...but the "debris" problem explained in the recall notice is a big farce. They said they fixed the problem with the debris in the factory after the issue started in 2011...when it started on the Sonata and others. Now it's extended to 2015 and there is also a software update to reprogram the knock sensor to detect engine failure on all these engines up to 2018 I believe. Not to mention debris would cause the engine failures at low mileage. Many are happening at higher mileage. It's just a defective engine design they have been trying to fix since like 2012.

Just want to say my experience. This video helped me get a new engine. Driving on my way to work at 4am and all of a sudden I hear a loud boom and rpm starts dropping down. Pull over and hear a grinding noise, thinking my transmission went out. I was able to drive it to work, and drive it home. I bought my car 3 months prior to from a private dealer down the street. Car fax was great and was well maintained. It was sold as is and thought I was out of luck. Buy a new transmission online and have my mechanic buddies take a look. They run a diagnostic and get a bunch of error codes reading misfire and fuel pump. Buy a fuel pump, replace it and still does not work. I finally do some research and see a bunch regarding my 2013 Kia Optima SX Turbo. I run my VIN and see no recalls open. I call Kia corporate, create a case number and they tell him to bring it to dealership. They let me know it was brought in before for a recall that was fixed. I called the dealership on the way to dropping it off. I let them know what happened, they asked what year and model and said “oh yeah I know what you’re talking about” I get there and they see that I’m clearly frustrated. They barely asked me my name and address. Didn’t even verify where it was bought, my license number, or anything. They already knew. They turned it off, said it was the engine rods and said it’ll be done in a week. I was surprised and a little relieved at the turnaround time. They offered to pay for my rental but I have a second car. Followed up a couple days later and let me know it was approved for a new engine. Said it’ll take 1-2 weeks to repair. I’ll update when I receive car. Wish I would’ve seen this video earlier instead of trying to fix myself. My advice is call corporate, open a case before taking it into the dealer and let them diagnose it. I’m the second owner, bought from a second dealer, has 117,000 miles and still were able to get a new engine.

2014 Kia Optima SX Turbo engine seized
I drive for a living and put on a lot of mileage and as such I maintain my car meticulously. However at 215,000km my engine seized solid without any warning. I took it into my local dealer and they replaced it with a brand new engine without any questions. They told me it was a $18,000 CDN replacement value, I seen the invoice to the dealership for $7,600.

I had this issue last year with my Kia Sportage 2015. Had to buy an auction car because they did not want to help me at the dealer. Sent my Kia to Mexico 2 months later since I live by the border and the mechanic told me that the bearings wore out and had a bent rod on the first cylinder. Which originally I thought was the timing change. Almost a year and 20000 miles later and the SUV still works but I hear the same ticks.

I received multiple mails about this class lawsuit. I took my car after the due time for the check. They took my car, checked it and extended the warranty(10 years or 120k miles) luckily the engine haven’t had any noise.
My car is 2013 Hyundai Sonata, and it works like a charm.

I have a hyndi i45 (sonata) and i got a letter end of 2017 regarding this recall so i took my car to my local hyndi dealership, they took it off me to check it out. 2 hours later i get a call saying my car is gucci and no problem so i was like sweet great news. fast forward 2 months i started to hear some horrendous noses coming from my engine so i take it back they say nothing is wrong, so im like wtf okay?? then june this year i was driving on the freeway to work and my car died (nothing is scarier than trying to cross 3 lanes of traffic doing 100kmh with no engine) surprise surprise there was something wrong with the engine but only after i paid them $600 of mechanical work. the dealership said they have to get the parts from Korea which will take 2 months so im like fair enough gotta do what ya gotta do. august rolls around no update so i call they say the engine is on back order, they say it will be shipped end of the month. I got my car back on 10/10/2018 she works great after putting a new battery in it cause my one was dead (i bought a new one in may) which the hyndi service team ran flat. hyndi have not reimbursed me a cent not for the tow i had to get, the $600 i spent on new parts that had to be replaced anyways or the $200 on a new battery.
this post sounds pretty bitchy but i want to let people know how they will treat you and to vent my frustration.

Happened to my 2013 Kia Sorento too. First the transmission went out at 134,000 and then at 141,500 the engine had some slight knocking, and few days later car stalled after making a squeak sound in the middle of the median. Called Kia, car wasn't on the recall list even though it was a 2.4 L engine but wasn't GDI. Asked for estimates, said they don't make long block engines anymore but they could put in a used long block engine (no documented miles but 6 month warranty) for $5,000 just for the engine or put in a new short block 2.4 L engine costing $6,000 for the engine. Labor alone was quoted at 20 hrs almost $2,000. The engines alone are worth more than the car itself in running order. Just crazy, dangerous and unacceptable. Never had hazard lights come up and code reader didn't pick anything up either. My Chevy Malibu 2001 has lasted over 170,000. Just bad cars from 2011 to 2014 for the Kia Sorento line with engine issues.

I have a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with 150K miles. The engine lost power as I was driving 75 MPH on the highway. I had to pay upfront $300 to tow it to the nearest Hyundai dealer. Sending a claim to the class action website for reimbursement. No push back or charges from the dealer on repairing the issue. Just like in the video the dealer did not replace the entire engine. They have several service kits that address the issue. They do not replace any hoses or connections. The repair was done within 3 days. I still hear a little bit of a ticking sound. We'll see how long this lasts.

The aluminium swarf (machining debris) gets embedded in the bearing material accelerating wear. However I believe the primary issue is oil consumption many of these engines start burning oil prior to failure additionally they replace the dip sticks in repaired or replaced engines to the later part with the red handle which has revised high and low marks requiring more oil to reduce starvation.
This engine family (design) is used by kia/hyundai, chrysler and mitsubishi both chrysler and mitsubishi use different suppliers for the bearings and oil pump & balance shaft module and their engines are reliable.
I'm not a fan of the oil pump / balance shaft module in hyundai / kia. This problem for hyundai / kia goes back to 2006.

My sister's engine actually seized from this. At first I thought it was a battery, starter or cable issue cause it would not turn over. When I tried to manually turn the crank with a breaker bar it would not budge. After a few attempts rocking crank back and forth we got it started again it stalled a couple times had loud ticking sound but eventually it ran fine .Took it to dealer and explained everything that happened and told them to test for the recall. They said it was "impossible" that it was seized, there was nothing wrong and changed us $100 for loose battery cable. They would not provide us with proof of the test, didn't even change the oil as they were supposed to. For six months the car ran fine until yesterday when out of nowhere engine is rattling, screaching, and stalled. Will barely start and seems like it's about to seize up again. We'll see what the dealer has to say about it now.

It is not Just Kia man, Trust me. It is the design of the GDI, this not the only issue with a GDI there is also sludge build up that causes failures as well due to the nature of a GDI it burns OIL. This engine was used in Air planes in the later years of the 60's in Junker plans then Mitsubishi used it and dumped it due to issues costing them a lot of funds. And Kia engines are built in the USA and the recall has to be from a certain plant as well too. So in 2017 NTSHA is trying to push for a massive recall on all GDI Engines.

I got ahold of my town’s KIA dealership and they looked up my VIN and set a date to fix the 4 recalls. My car is at 169,000 and they still told me they will fix it. All they had to do was look up my VIN and nothing else.I asked if I needed to show any paper work and they said nope and that there was no limit on miles. I remembered hearing that ticking noise and the mechanic told me that it was common with an old engine. But now I know what it really was. I have a 2011 Kia Optima with the turbo 2.0 engine. I got a recall notice a year or so ago, brought it in, and they said my engine tested okay. A month ago, while on a cross country trip, my engine light started flashing and my engine went into limp mode, wherein it will only go 20 mph to avoid further engine damage. After a supposed fix, I drove 20 miles, and it did the same, only this time the engine began knocking loudly. All I could do is drop it off at the then closed Kia dealer, rent a car , and proceed with my trip. To date, it is still not repaired, though Kia Consumer Affairs said they would put a complete new engine in, as well as reimburse me for my costs. We will see how this all goes down, hopefully within a week, as the engine was actually on back order, due to high demand. I have over $2,000 in towing and car rental costs so far, and I demanded they transport the car the 700 miles to my home when it is completed.

Hi. Just some FYI stuff here. The engine recall is for Theta 2 engines. It is not because of metal debris left over from manufacturing, but because of a design flaw in the GDI fuel system (gas direct injection). Also you should know that Hyundai apparently knew about the design flaw, and hid that information from consumers and regulators. Hyundai makes lemons.

I bought the lifetime oil change when we bought our 2015 optima. Been dealer oil changes from day and the car was under factory warranty when we bought it, so covered there. They notified me the engine short block is covered for life as long as I own the car. To me a company knowing that they have a problem such as pre mature engine failure and is 💯 standing behind they have my business. Toyota has known ring failures in some of their 4 cylinders due to low quality rings being usef and they do not stand behind the short block at all. They also consume excess oil so put the two companies side by side and I'll choose the one that stands behind their producr!

This is EXACTLY what happened to my car. @ 97000 I exited the interstate after driving 70+ mph and once I stopped at a light the car turned off and all lights on the dashboard came on. I turned the vehicle off then back on after about ten seconds and it started back like nothing had happened. The next day the check engine light came on. The following day I visited a Kia service center and told them I believed my car was having issues because of the recall. The advisor tells me no, if that was the case the engine would be making a lot of noise. So of course after I attempt to drive my car after taking it to a non Kia service center who said the issue was with the oil valve per the codes the computer provided, the engine started making noise, starting off sounding like a pencil in an oscillating fan and stalling.I took it to another Kia service center who confirmed the issue was recall related and is now replacing the engine. They provided a loaner vehicle, are assisting with reimbursement for the tow and I will also be submitting my receipts for the service completed. The situation is inconvenient and is very dangerous . Unfortunately many car companies including GM/Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda, Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, Fiat/Chrysler have been experiencing recalls

My car has 167000 miles on it. The flashing check engine light came on in April 2019 putting my car in limp home mode. I towed it in and they put on a wiring harness. 2 weeks later it happened again. As I am typing this they are installing a new engine. I will get it back in a few days.

My 2011 Kia Optima bought it brand new. After 2 years with 80,000 miles I received free Kia Visa card with $200, then used it for 100k service tune up. I changed oil every 7,500 miles as recommended by Kia, since then I had no problem what so ever. But by 2018 of June I had 232,000 miles and still running good, I took it to the dealer for oil change and complained about losing oil a lot with no leaks underneath, I left it there for one day for more diagnostics. The next day they told me they will install brand new engine free of charge and free rental car. After a week I've picked up my car with brand new engine and the service advisor said I have another 15 year warranty on the engine and unlimited mileage and recommended oil change every 5000 miles.
