CRAZY STORMS written by celebrated playwright and actor Philip Luswata and Directed Richard Kagolobya both of Makerere University was premiered in 2008 at the Uganda National Theatre before it toured in Ethiopia for the EATI Regional Theatre Festival in 2008.
A regular storm, the way we know it, is bad enough on its own but when it becomes crazy, everyone caught in it will no doubt go crazy with it! In playwright Philip Luswata’s “CRAZY STORMS”, it is a social and political storm. How do people deal with displacement in its totality? When the going get tough, the tough get going and the weak get desperate and they resort to desperate measures.
This one Act play is set in a refugee camp with people driven by survival instincts. Like arts journalist Denis Muhumuza wrote 12 years when they play was produced under the auspices of the Uganda Theatre Network/ EATI in conjunction with the Uganda National Theatre. “No surrender; is the biggest statement in the play; that suffering or loss is not the end. However crazy the storms, a man must hold on, stick out his chest and never surrender. The playwright mirrors the grim reality of life, the folly and wickedness of humanity but carefully builds a gripping, optimistic climax as PEOPLE BEGIN TO LEAVE THE CAMP and RETURN HOME”.
This is a perfect dose for us that have lived in the LOCK-DOWN for the past 6 months and now need that energy, that vibe to push us out of the lock-down back into our normal lives.
The play features Abu Kawenjja as Munduki, Samuel Ibanda as Ben Byenka, Kwezi Kaganda as Babadi Kasokoso, Geresome Mayanja as Maneno Benjamin; Agnes Nakakawa as Sharon Barungi with Julius Lugaya as Production Manager, Leonard Okware as Light Technician and Grace Flavia Ibanda as Stage Manager. It is a very relevant play for the times we leave in now.
