I’ve just started looking into Guinea Pigs and had no idea there are so many different breeds. Love them all! Thank you for sharing.
They forgot the dalmatians
There is also the Ridgeback which looks like an American with a short ridge of hair that stands up from the shoulders to the hind quarters.
The breeds recognized in the US are a bit different than noted here. US breeds are Abyssinian, Abyssinian Satin, American, American Satin, Coronet, Peruvian, Peruvian Satin, Teddy, Teddy Satin, and there are a lot of unrecognized "skinny pigs". The other breeds are in varying degrees of other names (Teddies have a different name here in this video) or some may be being introduced in the US.

I bought a Peruvian as a baby at a pet shop, not knowing it's breed until the hair kept growing and growing. Lots of brushing, cleaning, and I used conditioner on his lovely locks. He was gentle and loved my cats. He was a good boy. I haven't found another one since.
We got baby abyssinians yesterday. And I believe slashy Slash is just now starting to grow out some hair. I mean, I know they're born w/ it. Hes mostly covered w/ luxurious hair 😁. Just - some parts are still looking in the process. Thats normal, right? He kinda looks like a crusty baby that just came out the womb. I need to give these babies some vitamin c

Tip from a piggie owner: if you plan on having multiple male piggies, a good breed is the Sheba. They are extremely friendly, though you need to trim their fur 1-2 times a week. The get along especially well with Abyssinians (speaking from experience). I have three females, and my brother adopted a Sheba. I was worried when getting him a cagemate (he isn't fixed and we don't want babies) because males tend to fight around females, but Oreo took in Marshmallow as his child and now they can't be separated for more than two minutes before they freak out. Good luck for any future pig owners!

I had 2 teddy’s (2 Brothers) i highly recommand getting a teddy mine passed 2 years ago, but still devastated. The cute sounds they make when you come home or open the Frige 😍❤️

I have two abyssinians, one American, & my Peruvian just passed 😔. I wanted a texel so bad but I still love my boys anyways. I half heartedly... tried to convince my bf to get a skinny bc I dont think anyone will buy them... its just, i knew the outcome already. but he chose one & I chose the other. Honestly, if I had the space, id get every breed. Id prob have a ridiculous amount of them. Skinnies are just kinda so ugly 😅, they're still cute. I mean geeze, they're still wiwhoa creatures tho. & less prone to make me sneeze.

I have 2 Peruvian female piggies called Matilda and Pepper and they LOVE to eat especially Matilda they always squeak when they hear I open the refrigerator and when they smell veggies and when they hear me cutting their vegetables.

I have 3 boars, 2 American & 1 Abyssinian. They get along swimmingly, they scamper around and play all day. The Abyssinian in particular LOVES games, but he is the shyest around humans, even though he is clearly the “alpha male” in the two American cavy’s minds, but the most social one is one of the Americans, he simply cannot get enough head pats and chin rubbies, even if I don’t have food. They’re all about to be one year old. Such a special group!!!
I have an American and Coronet they get along well but there are times where they get annoyed at each other and steal eachother's treats!

As kids, we had an American and an Abyssinian. I preferred the personality of the American. Loved him!
Of the many Guinea Pigs I've had over the years, most were American Shorthairs, but of the others, several Cresteds, a few Abyssinians, and one abnormally large male Coronet.
The piggy in my channel picture is Iris, an unusually large female Abyssinian who lived seven years. Iris was my best ever Little Buddy.

All of a sudden I just adored Guinea pigs! My favorite breed is teddy!
Me and my sister used to own two boars, one a red and white American, the other a Rex. Cookie was the American, with Nugget being the Rex. I had only found out after they had both passed away that they were different breeds. I miss my boys. 😥

i have a white crested (melody) and a american (kuromi), but they are so unique in their own way, melodys an albino with beige fur and a spot of white, kuromis a fully brown and dark brown guinea its so cute
My beloved Shannon (skinny pig) gave birth to three beautiful babies today. Skinny pigs are my absolute favorite breed and the only breed I will adopt now. They are so friendly and personable. They are a little extra everything but so worth it. I recommend adopting one… or too!

I have an agouti Rex guinea pig, and he is so cute. He’s very dominant and aggressive but that’s just because he gets scared easily. He’s super chill and sweet though
I had 2 Himalayan sisters when I was 8 to 12 y/o, their names were Hakuna & Matata. Still miss em 10 years later lol

I have an American and a White-Crested
The American’s name is Peanut Butter and the White-Crested is named Potato.
They are class pets in the grades 6th, 7th, and 8th so they are very used to noise and people.
They are both adorable and get held and least twice a week

Although I love the cute cavies, I would like to point out that personality varies between the guinea pig, not the breed.
The Himalayan and the Sheba (also the teddy and texel), they were to cute! I just got piggy’s and omg! Adorable. I actually haven’t met them but my cousin picked them up for a household that wasn’t treating them right, their names are Reese’s and sniffles I can’t wait to meet them......(they are American guinea pigs)

I have a Abyssinian guinea pig and his name is Wafer. He is such a sweet boy that loves getting pet. He just had surgery though because he got stones and he needs lots of medicine but he is still so sweet.

The one on our left is Daisy, the one on our right is Poppy.
They are actually twins, 1 parent is an American guinea pig and 1 Abyssinian guinea pig, so they are both half-and-half, but judging off of fur, Daisy is American and Poppy is Abyssinian.

Gosh I love guinea pigs. One of mine just passed away the other day😢 Vet plan and meds didn't help. It was just his time to go😭 I sure miss him.
I had two skinny pigs. They were so sweet and soft to touch. One of them that I named Sunshine used to lick my mouth and would lift his head when I gently rubbed it. That was over 20 years ago. I miss Sunshine and Coco.

One of my baby ones is already like that. Hes gonna be the chill 1 w/ his elder. The other one is gonna conitiously try him. Should be fun trying to figure out the compatibility between these males. The babies are prob siblings & inseperable... whiskers just lost his buddy. ? Is prob angry, resentful, mourning, & yet feeling left out at the same time... of course we still love him. Hes a sweetie. But ohhhh hes so mean to lil fella. These boys need to be separated for now. Sigh. I just want them all to be happy. Those babies are gonna be teens one day... double sigh :/
I have a rex and a white crested piggie. They get along very well and they always are running around and up to something. There are sometimes where they jump on each other to be dominant but that's only with their wheek-ly apples. My white crested piggie isn't scared at all.

Edit: the person we bought it from said it was a purebred Rex, but now that we have her it seems like she might be crossed with a teddy… she is quite social and an explorer, and super fuzzy

I have an American and a Skinnypig they are very different in character! The American (Stripe) is friendly and sociable and the Skinny (Dobby) is a grumpy piggy 😂

Hey, I'm trying to figure out what breed my guinea pig is. I just got her a week ago and she's 3 months old. She has a white Crest at the top of her head but her hair is not short at all.... it's quite long and silky. I'm thinking she might be a cross between a silkie and a white crested but not sure. Does anyone have any ideas?
Blanka S hi! Does she look like my youngest guinea pig Poppy? Here’s a video of how she looks like at 6 weeks old. Poppy is a long haired guinea pig with a crest. The peruvian does not have a rosette on the top of the head, they have two rosettes at the back of the rump which is what causes the hair to all fall forward over the face.
My fave is himalayan and teddy they both r cuuuuute

One of my guinea pigs is black with a white stripe going from her pink nose and it goes up to the edge of her crest. Her crest is mostly black but towards the front it is white. Near her leg and her bottom she has a white blob and she has short fur. I can’t figure out what breed she is, as she has a crest but it’s not all white and she has a “Racing Stripe” going from her nose to her head. Please let me know what you think, thanks! i bought 2 guinea pigs a year ago and it’s hard for me to keep up with them mine are american but they shed a lot and i never cut their nails before because they scream and move and try to bite me when i try to cut them their nails are curling up it makes me sad i don’t know what to do
Madelyn Rae they are not always easy to take care of indeed! You can ask a vet to trim their nails. Hope this helps 💖
I got a baby one that has black nails. Im terrified of cutting his nails. Watch out for the pinkies they said... 😭 what about black nails? Idk where his nails start and his flesh ends. Its too early for all that but still...
Have someone else hold a flashlight 🔦 under the black nails to help see inside, or maybe hold the flashlight between your legs.
It's been a year since you posted your comment. I hope you did get your guinea pigs nails trimmed. It's painful fir them if nails are not trimmed.on a regular basis. Take to vet to be trimmed, it's worth the money.
