Hell yeah. When you train, it become easier and seems natural. When you haven't done something it seems unnatural and most people will give up because it's hard.
I always have detailed plans. Then I also have backups ready so I can 'wing it' in specific ways more effectively. New information emerges while executing a plan. Areas of greater uncertainty can be identified in advance. It's like when you make a 5 slide powerpoint and add in backup slides that cover likely questions , include extra entertaining attention getters or optional audience participation, and reference links to original sources.
Love it. If you seek perfection in everything, you will achieve it in nothing; but good is not always good enough. I've discovered that when I don't have a plan, I will procrastinate the day away. But, when I'm focused and have a plan, I will crush it. Wishing you all the best and continued success.
Well said Jocko! While I do tend to overthink things on occasion. Having a goal, and an initial plan, while remaining adaptable! That's where you get the most joy out of life. Adaptability is huge.
Be like Water - flexible and hard, it's a dichotomy. That's what success calls for. What we're seeking is SUCCESS, don't let the measure become the target.
"Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee
To sum it up on Winging-It: Only 'wing it' when the function involved in solving the problem is so ingrained it can be performed on autopilot. Repetition allows the specific function(s) to become a habit pattern, allowing the sub conscious mind to take the wheel when adrenaline and/or fear overcome the ability to act and think freely in the time required to act.
Winging it is only for professionals working at the highest level. The room with great quick opportunity that you blindly run into could be laced with traps that you don’t see until the exit is locked behind you
I am a weird person. If I am prepared and I prepare and don't listen to anybody and just trust my gut and find out the mistakes with pure calculation and no feelings, I always win. That was the way, I passed exams about topics I didnt know a shit about. But If I knew some shit and it sounded easy, I wouldnt study for it, I would wing it. Because, why be the best in something you are already understanding. I could use that time to correct my weaknesses and just a wing it, which I did. I was not strong, I ditched a little bit learning for jiu jutsu, I was broke, so I found a job, and in Jiu Jutsu I just concentrated on the fundamentals and kind a winged it. But this kind a depressing. Because, I have some much I want to work on and improve on that I am not able to excel at one thing. While becoming something that tries to know everything, I am wasting my time to nothing, since the task is impossible. But I want to be a man who knows a lot stuff and is vertile. Someone who can adapt and fight. looks, gestique, mimique, profession, choice of words, those are the weapons of our civil world. If we master them and know the many shades of them. So in order to become a good leader one has to find a good balance between winging and being prepared on the way to become the best of yourself in every important field for you. It is like ying and yang. Find the balance!
@jockowillink and @echocharles - I would love to hear your thoughts on risk mitigation and how it pertains to leadership. I was active duty and retired after 24 years of service and there were always risks. Most people think that if there is a risk then you shouldn't take action, but we know better through proper risk mitigation techniques that we can assume risk and take appropriate action while having a plan if something should go wrong because we've identified the potential risks. Please make a video covering that topic.
Cool to hear Jocko talking about keeping SoP instead of optimizing. Different from adapting to conditions. Maybe that distinction could be clearer, I have seen this issue (and they way optimizing bites in the butt) many many times in IT work.
Winging it shouldnt be first option for most people. 7ps I got from the Marines that I still use today. Prior, proper, planning, prevents, piss, poor, performance. But some times you just have to wing it.
> When you execute your plan, you’ve got to pay attention. If you have ADHD (know thyself), when you make a plan, you should note the things to pay attention to.
What about spontaneously adapting and adjusting to what is presented , ie take the simple skill of building a fire , plan ? or to have a simple rough strategy and then adapt , do we ever know what is going to happen , quick plan do you mean what we should do ? How to approach this ? Prioritize , so basic plan that can be all most totally de-re-constructed ? What about creativity ? Are you just talking about war or life in general or work please be more specific ? In a war scenario I could see you being dummied or by a really skillfull opponent leading you on into a situation then from nowhere wham , surrounded it surely depends on the level of combatants , afghani rebels and Iraqi insurgents are one thing but a modern experienced military opponent well versed in all of this , you would be caught out every time , decoys , dummies the unexpected the plan is working or appearing to until wham ! What do you think ?

Test like you fly (aerospace version)
Winging it is always my first choice. With blue cheese not ranch.
I'm a little partial to the chipotle dry rub. #tasty

As a musician and sound engineer, it really is like that in art.
Be flexible, bu5 stick to the known ways, but be innovative where needed
These videos are epic tip of the hat Mr Echo Charles
You can be flexible, change your plan if required, but do not change the objective. The desired or required outcome is your purpose.
thank you for that clear concise thought put into words
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good

And don’t let good be the enemy of great. There is just a fine line between all of it.

Had no idea you sold tea, that's pretty legit man. Should broadcast that more. Loved this video and topic.

Man, this hit at an important time for me. Appreciate what these guys are giving fellas
This is some solid advice right here.
I love this podcast. I needed to hear most topics covered by Jocko W. Keep ‘em coming.
Really enjoyed the podcast with Master Chief Gardner! Would like to hear more stories of your brothers. Please invite some others in the future !
That's an awesome quote from General Patton, one of many.

Planning is all preparing how to react on the basis of what one wants to happen.
4:00 That applies incredibly well in MMA.
Echo is yoked!
Thanks for all the work guys!
Thank You Much 😊
It is better off to be prepared for all things good bad and indifferent then winning in the long run it will pay off.
Risk mitigation will identify potential things that could go wrong and a plan to achieve the outcome regardless of the risk.
If you fail to plan, plan to fail.
No plan survives first contact with the enemy.

This really hit home for me
“Always flexible, never limp!”
Jocko is hard as woodpecker lips
These excerpts are great.
Great Vid💯
SOPs are everything baby!!!!
Like a quarterback stepping back and watching the play unfold.
> be able to stick to your plan but adapt.
Know the “why” for deviating from the SoP and make sure it’s 1.7x better than the “why” of the SoP.
Echo Charles is SWOL AS HELL😆😆😆😆
JOCKO, please get PAT MAC on here. That conversation would be LEGENDARY.
Love Pat Mac. That would be. Righteous.
> come up with a good plan. Don’t come up with a perfect plan that takes 2 weeks.
A Dichotomy of Leadership.
Wingchotomy of Preparingship
WING SOME
Winging it shouldnt be first option for most people.
7ps I got from the Marines that I still use today. Prior, proper, planning, prevents, piss, poor, performance.
But some times you just have to wing it.
It's a paradox not a contradiction.
My plans usually include a great deal of winging it lol
I love the person who down voted this video...what a beast.
Lol
Plan flexible plan contingencies, a plan excited now is better than a plan not until next week
You always need a PACE plan. Primary, Alternate, Contingency, and Emergency (PACE).
Violence of action and contingencies!
The OODA loop...
Jocko do you do much running for cardio? If not, what do you practice for your cardio game?
> When you execute your plan, you’ve got to pay attention.
If you have ADHD (know thyself), when you make a plan, you should note the things to pay attention to.
Exactly!

Should you wing on skinny knees?
Incel Winging It vs Chad Preparedness
Pure gold
if you disliked this, you cant wing it.
Opposites are options too. Why you can't ever really be just strong in your belief towards anything but strong in your belief towards everything 😜
Does anyone know why he's always looking at his papers is this a pre-written out thing I guess he was prepared for this one huh
