During the last half of the 20th century there was a cluster of tenors, mostly Italian, who never quite achieved the prominence of what I'll call the top-tier. I was lucky enough to have seen live Giuseppe Giacomini, Giorgio Cassellato-Lamberti, Giorgio Merighi, Pedro Lavirgen, Flaviano Labo, Piero Visconti... but Daniele Barioni was my favorite. I saw Barioni at the pinnacle of his vocal power in the early 1960's opposite Birgit Nilsson in 'Turandot'. Comparisons to Corelli are inevitable and obvious. But I would take Barioni in a heartbeat. He demonstrated intelligent musicianship and often exquisite phrasing that wasn't sacrificed for the sake of an approaching high note. And then, of course, there was his top. Where other tenors would fear to tread, Barioni "gave it all he got". Somehow Barioni was capable of gifting us with absolutely perfect - no, mind-blowing - top notes: sustained longer than perhaps any tenor in history; engaging a judicious yet ferocious portamento of chest tone that established the promise of the top note itself which, once arrived upon, grew and grew in both volume and shape. In the Teatro "La Fenice" live performance recording of 'Turandot', the climactic note which ends the "Non piangere Liu" scene is trumpeted for 15 seconds! THANKS FOR THE POSTING!

Well, I would consider the last half of the 20th century from 1950 to the year 2000. If this is accurate I must disagree with your opening statement. There was Di Stefano, Del Monaco, Corelli, Raimondi Tagliavini and Tucker who of course wasn't Italian, but I believed achieved the top tier placement. Of course you are entitled to have Barioni as your favorite tenor. He had a beautiful quality of voice along with the other admirable traits you mention. Although your bias is with Barioni, I find it difficult to dethrone Corelli in this role who sang the opera over 250 times and is truly associated with the role more so than any other tenor since 1957. I don't think that Barioni sang Calaf more than 5 times in his career. Still it's your prerogative to enjoy him over anyone else. Yes, Corelli use to run ahead of tempos at times,Compromising phrasing, to get to his great high notes which the public loved. But, it's also not the composers intention to hold the B-Flat at the end of the aria for 15 seconds. I cannot remember a great tenor in live performances that did not take liberties with the music, whether compromising phrasing or holding high notes too long. Enjoy

sugarbist Hi. Please re-read the first sentence of my comment. I am saying that the tenors I list DID NOT achieve top-tier status. The tenors I list were "B-team" singers who I feel genuinely deserve respect and fame... perhaps more than they achieved. Of course, when one refers to the "top-tier", the names that come to mind are precisely those that you mention. I would most likely add Carlo Bergonzi, Jon Vickers, Alfredo Kraus, and Nicolai Gedda.

Never saw him live but saw him on TV singing of all things the duet from Tales of Hoffman (normally sung by two females). He ended it on mind blowing High C! All the tenors feared him because of the beauty of his voice and tremendous top notes. He would have no peers today.

Barioni, was a very fine Tenor when on form, I heard him in the House on about Forty occasions, to me he was at his best in Puccini, especially Manon Lescaut and Tosca, but in Verdi he could be strained and the projection of his notes were affected and in Duets and trio's his tempi could be flawed, but like Fillipeschi who also had similar problems with the lower register of his voice, it was like he was croaking for air, but both of these were very great Tenors and Barioni was a Million times, better than the Powder puff Domingo, who was singing Light Baritone when he was Tenor and now is singing Baritone as a Light Tenor still, he should give up and let the other fakes have a chance, Barioni gave you what you wanted, strong Virile manly top notes, but he had a sense of Rhythm in Puccini which brought out the Pathos of the Tenor roles, Di Stefano had similar but he ruined his glorious voice. I would rate Barioni in the Top Six of Italian Tenors after the War, when on Form he was top of that top six.

Saludos,

Auguri, compie oggi 89 anni!

For Lorna Kelly. E poi... in heaven! E noi? Dobbiamo, ovviamente essere all'altezza!
