  • Aldwych tube station (formerly Strand) opened in 1907. It was used as a shelter during the Blitz, and more recently as a film location after its closure in 1994. Time Out got a bit of a peek into the secret tunnels and platforms of the station.

      15 storey building? 😮 I live on the 5th floor (ground fl.+ 4 fl.) and it's 109 steps. Yes, it's an old apartment building with quite high ceilings, something around 3.5 m. But still, 15 floors must have more stairs.

    I managed to get in here once, and it is absolutely amazing, slightly creepy, but it is so cool! The best part is that because it was only abandoned around 30 years ago and still used as a film set, it is in amazing condition. Also, when I went down there, I found some bullet casings, so I think that the MET, or BTP might use it for training.

    I used the Holborn to Aldwych line as part of my commute in 1982 to 1985 - the lift did get stuck one morning but I can't now remember whether we escaped to the adjacent one or it just got going again. The line used to operate at peak hours, closing about 0930 and starting up again about 1600 as I recall. We were an exclusive bunch of users which is why I suspect it shut; there simply wasn't enough custom to make it pay.

    When I was a kid in the 60's living on the South Coast of England I used to go up to London on a day trip. I'm sure that ' Strand' was one of the underground stations we'd head to, having got off the overground at Charring Cross. I certainly remember those lifts. And, I think, a Lyons Corner House nearby.
    Great to see this.

    • @Garfie489
      @Garfie489 4 года назад +3

      "Strand" in the 60s would have been a different station. This station was opened as "Strand", but was renamed Aldwych in the 1910s as the Northern line was extended causing an issue where it had 2 stations known as "Charring Cross". Thus one was renamed to Strand, the other kept Charring Cross - thus the station in the video was renamed to avoid confusion given it was a very minor station.

    I love stuff like this, this used to be my station when l worked in Commercial Street. I also used to get off at the original Shoreditch station also now closed. It was the end of the line, the station master was a lovely old Black fella who had a station cat and flower baskets. Those were great times in London in the 80's. I much preferred the dickensian feel to London then, now its spoilt - just my opinion.

      You might think, but in reality it would be like a hotel with no restaurant. There's no passengers there, so no one dropping crumbs and half eaten sandwiches, so nothing for them to eat. They stay away and live where the food is, which is why you sometimes see them on the tracks at other stations, even on platforms if there are fewer people about. If people had a bit more respect for their surroundings and dropped less litter and food, there would be less of a rodent problem everywhere, not just in stations.

      Aldwych was located on a weird, one station branch of the Picadilly line. It never got a regular service, and you were always required to transfer to get anywhere from there. Which means passenger numbers were low, and it didn't justify the expense of keeping the shuttle service running and the station open. It's now frequently used for filming scenes in movies and shows

    • @ChannelReuploads9451
      @ChannelReuploads9451 4 года назад +6

      It was a mainly PEAK station, and the lifts needed replacing, and they could not justify the cost of replacement to the income from the station, so it was closed.
      You can see the Station in the movie, V for vendetta, as well as The Prodigy's Firestarter.

    • @jonnotshared7590
      @jonnotshared7590 3 года назад

      The cost of maintenance against the number of passengers. Sadly London Underground decided it wasn't worth spending the money. That said, if they applied that formula to every station about 30% of tube stations would close

    • @quantisedspace7047

      You can not have 'gone past' Aldwych, let alone do so at high speed. The station is on a single station spur. Trains to Heathrow never went past it, because they couldn't, without a reversal. It's conceivable that trains to Heathrow may have /started/ there, but 'past' it is not possible.

    Aldwych Station is said to be haunted by the ghost of an actor who once "trod the boards" of the Strand Theatre, from which the station got its original name before being changed to Aldwych. Early in its run, the now-totally-discredited "Most Haunted" TV series covered this station in its first or second season.

    Would be interesting to lear more about it. Why is there an unfinished part of the station when the rest is already closed? Why they planed it so big, when it is no longer in use? What were the plans for this station?
    Was there any other station in London that had these old lifts after 1994? Which time the last original lifts went out of service?

    • @Garfie489
      @Garfie489 3 года назад

      The history is the Piccadilly was made up of the merger of 3 separate lines. The project was taken over by the District railway during construction, and so a connection was made at Holborn between two of these planned lines.
      Aldwych was the original planned terminus of one line, and was still built to its original spec despite now becoming a branch line. Presumably they needed to build to the original plans, but never connected the tunnels up.

    • @jonnotshared7590

      TfL sites that are usually included are Aldwych, Down Street and occasionally the deep level shelters
