I want to thank you brother for this video. I am Mohawk who still has family at St. Regis. While I have made moccasins by sewing I did not know the process for lacing.
I absolutely love this company. My family prefers them over Crazy Crow hands down with the only exceptions of when CC carries and item that WB doesn't. Thank you so much for doing this video. Being from the Eastern Band of Cherokee, It's especially good to see and learn from.
i love the measurement by simple means! i get tired of the amount of wasted time in pulling out expensive equipment and monkeying around trying to get things exact!
Great tutorial, Wandering Bull. About 12 years ago I made myself a pair of centre seam moccasins, but I used sinew and a needle to sew mine. I sewed them inside out, then turned them right side out. They looked great, too, after I beaded them. I think we all have different ways of making moccasins, but your way seems easier! I didn't like the look of that big knot on the outside of the toe of your moccasin. Other than that, they looked really nice! I'm part Mi'kmaq, so centre seam mocs are just right! ~Janet in Canada
Just bought some knee high moccasins from your site. I ordered soft sole and got hard. But I can't complain, I got them for a 50% discount $55; maybe $60 after tax. They're normally $99-105 after tax, so either way I'm happy; and the quality of them is spectacular.
Very good demo , well explained , engaging and interesting. I hope you do more and on a regular basis. Can you do more, with the kits you sell and trade items you supply? I look forward to watching more. Thanks for posting
Great video to learn how to make moccasins for any type of reasons for moccasins most of them could use for a lot of things keep your feet dry or keep your feet from walking on hard things like saw grass and other keep feet warm from cold ground
For my fellow Tsalagi people for the pucker toe you can use this same pattern but you do I believe a cross stitch. Go from the middle from the inside then cross stitch through both sides and pull until you're all the way up. Make sure it fits like a sock ✌️😁
Siyo! True, although the puckered toe might be more comfortable for people who wear orthotics. I did mine this way for that reason, so they stay in place better.
@@blackcitroenlove Yeah either way if fine for me, both still would be Eastern Woodland... Sometimes I'll use a thicker hide like from hobby lobby large packs because the California floor gets hot... Lol But I love either way... And in all black..
@@blackcitroenlove I also use a thicker hide from hobby lobby, and I don't turn the pucker toe inside out. I still like they way they look when don't turn em inside out. I make em for my wife to but Fringe the cuffs for her.. they still look NDN AF tho 😂
When making infant mocs, is the front and the back measured the same with a two finger measurement for the front and one for the back or is there a different way to measure?
Thanks for watching! We use a lace-maker tool. You can find it on our website here wanderingbull.com/shop/craft-supplies/tools/leather-lace-maker-tool/
Hello David, Thanks for watching. Lot of folks will use "sno seal" it is a commercial product you can purchase in several stores. This will turn the leather darker in color.
@@thewanderingbull9843 Thanks for the reply - yep, I've used it on hiking boots before - awesome stuff - kept my feet dry crossing small streams in NH before, just didn't know how the bottom leather on the mocs would deal with the sno seal - lived for a time in Holderness, wish I was still there.
@@thewanderingbull9843 thankyou for the reply. I'm almost finished beading one side of another pair mocs, I will get to sew the latigo sole to the beaded top soon, I've never made this style before. I purchased the latigo from your store recently!
Hello from Czech republic. Very interesting way how to make moccasins. Do you know what tribe made it like this? Is it possible, that some eastern iroquios like Mohawks wore these?
Eastern woodland natives wore center seam moccasins. This would include the Iroquois nation. Although, the method of creating center seam moccasins was different from tribe to tribe. This is more of a pucker toe center seam.
Got kit in today the only thing this video does not cover is the last step leather piece above the heel for tightening around your feet. Happy customer thanks.
This looks the easiest so far some people have rabbit ears on the heel I don't know why but this looks like the way iam gonna try iam horrible at needles and threads. I hunt and fish but needle and threads not good lol
I have a few questions, when he draws the pattern it looks like it should be symmetrical, at least from my perspective. should the cut out be the same on both sides or is it meant to be different? another question I have is about the holes, I assume there should be a same number of holes on each side along with the extra hole in the middle, however when I go to lace up the moccasin, there always seems to be more holes on one side than the other. another problem I have is when I measure the distance from the front of the shoes with my fingers, they always seem to be too short when I finish the moccasins, I didn't know if there was an actual measurement to use or if them being tight is how it is just supposed to be? I think this is an awesome tutorial, there are just a few things that i'm not clear about. Thank you.
This style looks nice. Too bad I only have a bag of scrap leather. So If I want matching shoes I had to make a different style. Well, at least I do now because I already cut pieces out yesterday for a different style. I am just making slippers for indoor, but eventually I want this style of moccasin to work in the garden and wearing outside. Why couldn't youtube have recommended this video to me yesterday.. Oh well.

You answered my quarry. .. I have a thin deer hide, so I didn't want heavy thread, (inside only mocks)..

Awesome video, wonderinh what is the purpose of the suede being on the outside? Wouldn't it be more durable the other way?
It comes down to preference. Thanks for watching!
Awesome!
Thanks for watching!
Does it matter what side of the leather is the outside
Thanks for watching! No it is your personal preference on which side of the leather you would like to have on the outside.
very cool looking
Thank you

Would these be correct for Iroquois as well? I know they tended to wear a center seam but didn't know if it was different than these.
Do you need to trace left and right foot? Or is the pattern universal?
You can just trace one foot and flip over the tracing to make the other pattern. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for asking, this is what I was wondering too.
Could you make a video on how to make (or direct me to one) of making ankle Fringe?
Thanks for watching, I will add this to our list of idea for the next video's! Not sure where to direct you for this. Thanks again

How are they walking in crusty hard snow.? Do they tend to be slippery?
Thankyou Wandering Bull for the great tutorial... do you think I can wear these for my highlander costume?
Thanks for watching.
Yes you can
Always had trouble with Mocs, made a few pairs but they look terrible. Never occured to me to use my thumb and fingers to mark puckers lmao
Thanks for watching. Best wishes on the next pair!
excellent video, is it possible to double sole this style of moccasin thanks
Thanks for watching ! You would have to sew on if added to the outside or put and insert on the inside.
@@thewanderingbull9843 ok thankyou
How would you adjust these to fit a child? Is it the same finger/thumb measurements?
Hello Thank you for watching. Yes you can use your finger measurement. You can pull the lace up the front tighter to pull in the spaces.
Wanishi for this tutorial. What would you recommend for the soles to make them water resistant or waterproof?

@ross reed Interesting will have to check this out.
I've seen these decorated with quillwork down the middle of the seam - would you just stitch the quills on over the pucker ?

Hello from Czech republic. Very interesting way how to make moccasins. Do you know what tribe made it like this? Is it possible, that some eastern iroquios like Mohawks wore these?
I believe so, there was a singe moccasin made this way found in the wall of Johnson Hall. Thanks for looking at our video.
I think the cherokees wore this kind
This is similar to what my tribe the Senecas wear.

I wonder if there's ever been a dude from Massachusetts that had a Swedish father that named his son "Mark Classon".
I wanna make a pair now. Are you supposed to wear socks with these? I would imagine the inside would get slippery when the feet get sweaty.
Thanks for watching. So folks wear socks and some don't . Some also add in their sole inserts.
The toe on my moccasin points down slightly instead of pointing up.. A trip hazard.. what did I do wrong?
Sound like you may want to pull it tighter at the toe.

I like everything except for the big knot. Is there a way to make it not so obvious?
The front knot does not have to be large. Just large enough to hold the leather in.

How did people a thousand years ago get by without the paper or the pattern or the scissors?
Oh how things have changed!
By measuring directly on the leather to be used. A sharp flake of flint cuts leather very easy and most likely would have been used.
