My local (Mpls) store is Groth Music and they have dozens of ukuleles on display. I share Mike’s enthusiasm for Oscar Schmidt ukuleles and unfortunately they are mostly available online where you can’t play them first. I have the Oscar Schmidt Mike Lynch Tenor ukulele which he doesn’t show here. Bought from Butler Music on eBay, it is spectacular. Great tone and action. Sure do miss Mike. He is still an inspiration. Thank whomever that keeps his videos up.

I bought ukulele to my father as a Christmas present (the cheap one for the beginners)! He is so happy! But funny thing is that I fell in love with this instrument very fast and I started to learn how to play faster than he is! I've arleady can play 2 songs and it's beacuse youtube! I can play a little bit of classic guitar. I've learned everything by myself. Mike my goal is to learn every song you learn here. I hope to keep my fascination. Thank you for online lessons!

Thanks Mike. I have learned most of my ukulele playing from your play-a-long videos. I also own the Oscar Schmidt OU5 and it is a great concert ukulele. I have moved up to both tenor and baritone ukuleles as my hands are very large also. The baritone is great for songs usually made for guitar and is much simpler to play. I have both high G and low G tenor ukuleles depending on my mood. Thanks for all your videos and helping make the ukulele a serious instrument.

Great advice especially if you don't live near a ukulele store. If you live in Southern California we have at least 3 stores devoted exclusively to Ukuleles so if you live here I encourage you to buy from the local store since you will be better able to see what fits your body, sound preferences, etc. by trying out different models. The local stores will also have looked it over and given it a set-up to make sure it plays properly. The 3 I know of are U-SPACE in Downtown LA, Anacapa Ukulele in Ventura County, And Island Bazaar in Orange county.

The tuning on the uke is the same as a guitar, but up a fourth and the 4th string is tuned up an octave. The chord shapes are all the same, with different names. C becomes F and G becomes C and so on.
The re-entrant tuning makes the instrument sound brighter and more cheerful and offers potential that straight tuning doesn't have.
You can also buy a low G string if you need straight tuning for playing single notes, but check out Gaspar Sanz played on uke to see what re-entrant tuning can do.

You can buy a set of GCEA strings made expressly for the baritone from Aquila. String those up and you have basically a long necked tenor with additional oomph! That's what I did with mine. I also went with an Aquila Red low G. Sounds freakin' awesome! I bought them on eBay for not much through "atomicbich".

I agree with most of what you said in this video Mike. My wife has an OU5 and is quite happy with it. One thing I disagree with is the lineage of the Washburn Company. While the Washburn name has been around for a long time, the name is the only thing that the modern day Washburn Company has with the vintage Washburns. Unlike the Martin company which has been in the same family and has some continuity, the tradition of Washburn is name only.

Yeah, I bought a Lanikai CK-TEQ Solid Curly Koa. Great instrument, stays in tune and with Aquila strings has a really snappy percussive sound. I picked it up for $500 Aussie. Recently I also bought a Kanile'a K1 Tenor. It's much louder and has a great tone. The intonation is just perfect and it stays in tune really well. I bought my girlfriend a Cordoba Soprano solid Acacia (they say Koa). The intonation is terrible and hard to fix. I got her an 'a nue nue' concert, which is very good.

I have a Mainland Solid Mahogany Soprano Uke, it plays fantastic. Probably a good one to step up to. I supose it suits me because I have small hands. I can see the attraction of the Tenor and may invest in an OS one. I also play guitar, so a Baritone wouldn't be too difficult.

I want around looking for a reasonable ukulele. Tried out several types including some priceys ones until I came across a two sound hole Ukulele.
I found the 2 sound hole tenor size to be the loudest and the brightest sounding compare to the same tenor size ukulele with a traditional single sound hole in the centre ...of a similar price range. I am now happy with my boulder creek ukulele.

Thank you Mike. I'm tossed up on my next uke, thinking about the OS, spalted mango, (tenor is my favorite size). So, will the mango hold up? I've seen some reviews that discuss a peeling up of the wood. Please let me know what you think. It's gorgeous, and I'm interested in the OS spalted mango playability, resonance??? Thanks for doing this video.

Faaitoito...chords for GCEA are same as chords for DGBE but 3 1/2 notes difference. An F chord for CGEA is the same chord as a C chord on DGBE. You can count on one hand from CGEA to DGBE- F-G-A-B-C.. F becomes C on DGBE same fingering. Same for all chords. Check out HonuPicks for best strumming pick.

How does the fret spacing and neck width compare on a tenor, concert and soprano ukulele? I have a soprano and even with my small hands and short fingers find it impossible to play certain chords. I want a better and larger uke but as you stated local stores simply do not carry a selection to try.

Hi, Mike! First, let me say that i love your vids and how much i've learn from them. I love to play my soprano ukulele with you on the background playing and singing eheh
But i'm thinking on buying a Lanikai's LU-21Baritone. But i wonder if I can do to this model the same thing that i did with my regular soprano ukulele - reverse the strings for left hand playing. Can you tell me if i can do this "trick" to the baritone? Thank you so much for your atention.(pardon my english)

Uke Mike- I have a baritone uke which is tuned DGBE...BUT before I realized that the other ukes were tuned to GCEA, I learned all the chords for the GCEA.
Some of the songs written for GCEA sound alright, some not so great, with the baritone tuning....do I have to relearn all the guitar chords?? Need Advice! MJ
I am just beginning...and love it. You are VERY helpful.

+Gert Lombard Hi Gert! I've been playing it for about 6 weeks and am really, REALLY happy with it. It plays much better than its $170 price tag and I'm thinking of restringing a low-G for more and deeper resonance. There's a really cool ukulele shop here in Los Angeles that has some $1000 and up ukes and I'm not so envious anymore. I'm just glad you didn't let anyone talk you into playing right-handed. Go lefties!

    • @urpetdog
      @urpetdog 9 лет назад +1

Marguerite Farrell If you tune them all the same, then the chords are the same. The baritone is typically tuned like the first 4 strings on a standard-tuned guitar, so the chords would follow the same fingering as a guitar. Though I'm sure you can tune the baritone ukulele to typical uke tuning.
