That was a cool video! Finally a build video I can enjoy. Loved seeing the custom machine work done on the lathe and the time to indicate it all. Great content
Glad to see all the new content man! Been following for years. You inspired MY turbo LS Crown Vic build! Your dominator tune got mine up and running actually. Thank you for everything you do!
Nice video! Looks like you learned a lot from Hutch and the other guys on Yellow Bullet. I just did a pro mod direct drum and wound up with .125 clearance. Had to get the manufacture to send me some extra steels. They were .060 wish I had a lathe to cut some factory thick steels to take up the clearance.
Love the video . I wish you did more th400 and powerglide videos in depth like this. Please do a 3 speed th400 or powerglide, 1200-1500hp buildup. Subbed and following.
I sent my fairbanks turbo 400 to a friend to rebuild and when he tore it down the case was no good they have those raised parts in it i dont know if it where the drume sits but he told me it happens alot from down shifting it so much so he was looking for a case for mè and i was also looking for one i called a friend he saidhe had one that was in a blower car he bought but it was converted to a 2 speed he gave it to me he said it was pulled out the car because 1st gear was t0 aggressive for driving it on the street so i guess thats why it also dont have a transbrake or a manual valve body . I never used it yet my buddy found me a good case and built a 400 for mè with s manual valve body with a reverse pattern im sorry now i never had him sèt it up with a trans brake once i get my 421 built im going to put it behind that and see if i like it. Great video
This was a very interesting look at the work that goes into this. Also... am I recognizing your name from the sloppy mechanics community? edit: I see Matt's comment now so that answers that.
I enjoyed the video. I do have a question. With the Ultra bell, how do you insure that the centerline of the crankshaft and input shaft are in alignment? I seem to remember offset dowel pins back in the day.
The 8 pump bolts are shouldered and I believe that's all that aligns it. I'm sure there's a way to check it, I never have and have never had an associated problem. That doesn't mean I'm right though. Lol
I don't build a bunch of race th400s, mostly daily driver stuff around here. Finding bad parts in 40 year old transmissions, walking all over to get core parts, machine work, plugs here, restricting feed holes there. Phew. I can completely tear down, bushings, seals, etc, and build, including all the pump and VB updates a 4L60e in 3-4 hours if no one bothered me and the phone didn't ring. A th400 with a bunch of aftermarket stuff? They always take me a while.
I'm not sure what you're asking? I think you're asking if I'm the guy from cameron's torque converters. I'm not, he's over in South Carolina I believe. I'm in TN, I'm a nobody compared to him.
I also use the 4l80e intermediate piston and 4 clutch stack in the th400. What's your opinion on Teflon rings on the pump and center support? I've used teflon and metal rings but never had any issues with either one. It's nice to see someone else spin and move your drum pistons up and down to make sure the seals are in right, other then the intermediate obviously.
I use metal with stock rebuilds, not in fixed line pressure, other professions told me it won't end well. I've used both of the 4L80e style sealing rings and the orange scarf cut Teflon all with positive results
A 4l80 int piston sits below the snap ring in a 400, it has a gap to close before even hitting a steel. May be better off milling a 400 piston to get clearance.
@BEANS-O-MATIC Transmissions the early 4l80e piston fits with no issues, the late 4l80e piston you have to use the small wave plate to make up the height difference in the piston.
I hope the converter wasn't sitting around for too long 😅 What is the mystery spray in the Zep bottle? Or the super goop you put on the intermediate piston seals?
Can you tell me about the vacuum line going to the modulator valve? Does the hard metal line have a check valve in it ? Can I run a line from the modulator valve to the manifold vacuum on carb?
Can you tell me do all converters fit early and late 4l80e's looks like there is a differance in hub height. I have a hughes 25 25L which has a 2" hub hieght and there telling me it won't work in a late 4l80e any ideas. Cheers
I'm pretty sure those are 4L80e "PEEK" teflon rings. They are dark and can look like iron, but they don't interlock like the stock th400 cast iron rings do.
This is for a buddy, we mostly do stock rebuilds, and the occasional hot rod unit for a local racer. We don't have a dyno so we don't like shipping out units, too much risk. Grady farrer (the guy who designed the brake I used) might be your guy
@@prostreethustler239 it has a lot of nice parts and time. Bellhousing, super drum, billet input and main, billet hub, two speed, and dump. Probably in the $5000 range if I were to do another one for someone local.
This was a build for a good friend, I've never priced one out for a retail job, he had some of these parts already so that offset the cost greatly. This is probably a $4500-$5000 build if I were to do one in the future though.
Get a 3L80 ATSG manual, check out the transmission section on yellowbullet.com, I have a long thread over there from like 10 years ago that has some good info
The king racoon sent me.
Great video, fun to watch a skilled builder do his thing!
This is intensely satisfying. Makes me want to build another.

thank you for taking time to do this!

That's one heck of a unit you built.
Very cool. Thanks for taking the time to do this. We all know time is money
yueessssssssssssssss
I was wondering why this came up in my feed, and I am glad it did.
Great informative video, thanks for sharing your knowledge..
I am not a fan of working on transmissions. But watching this is like a speed run of it and makes the process much more enjoyable lol.
That's what I was shooting for, leave all the fluff on the cutting room floor and just put the meat and potato's in, thanks for the kind words!
@@cameron878 Nailed it for sure. I would be happy if I didn't have to take one apart ever again and I enjoyed all the way through.

Good video man. I just built almost the exact same unit down to the Farrer Valvebody. Only difference was using a intermediate clutch eliminator.
Great video , I will use it many times . Now if I can find a 4L80 video this good .

GREAT Video. Will you sell a couple lower gear sets?
Nice work! I am prototype builder for a OE manufacturer. The new stuff is similar to the past.
What's next up after 10 speeds?!
@@cameron878
I believe eclectic or hybrid. Not sure there can be a higher speed transmission.

Little wd40 to keep it from rusting inside while my friend finishes his truck it's going in

11:50 makes me want sweet and sour chicken
Gen tso > seeet and sour

What is the mystery spray in the Zep bottle? Or the super goop you put on the intermediate piston seals?
Wd-40 to keep it from rusting. 50/50 mix of ATF and STP oil treatment
@Cameron Vic i use the same mixture, love it for assembly! Made me smile to see that.
I would've thought the billet forward hub would've came machined for a bearing. Shows what I know...
your video is awesome. do you have a valve body and plate combo for Low& Reverse only. its for a demo derby build
I'd bet my buddy Grady that built this valve body could build you one like that
Search "farrer out transmissions" on Facebook, message that page, they might be able to help you
Yes!
Can you build a 3 speed next
It basically looks the same except with a different valve body

3k-35 just for parts

When was it cutting in reverse? Or do you mean the feed?
Increasing the i/d of the steels.
