The score is easy when you know what it represents. 20 10 130 18 12 120 The first number of 20 is the number of goals (6 points each, so 20x6=120), the second number is the behinds (1 point each, so 10x1=10) and the final number of 130 is the total score(120+10=130). Now apply that to the second line and you get 120 as the total. The team with the most points wins.
Yeah this video the AFL put together does such a shit job of explaining the score. "Goals are worth 6, behinds are 1, here's a random scoreline that we'll highlight without explaining the layout and not bother telling you we add it all together either - fkn good luck you lot"
I did explain it to Saucey after he’d stopped recording (I’m the aforementioned Spacewolf) This video, despite being older has more easily digestible information for Americans, mainly their odd measurement system.
There’s a 7 foot Texan, Mason Cox playing for Collingwood, go and check out his journey, he had never hear of AFL and now he is a respected professional.
A. Our ball is too thick to throw well overhand. 2. Throwing is illegal. It must be punched or slapped. iii. Catching a ball from a punch or slap is not a mark, hence the player can be tackled as soon as he receives the ball. D: Marks only count from kicks travelling 15m if they are not touched by a player or contact the ground between the boot and the catch. 5. A mark gives the option for the player to walk back unobstructed to take a kick or punch the ball to someone while an opponent takes the 'mark' (spot where the mark was taken), without obstruction. In main play, 15 seconds of non-obstruction is allowed unless in range of kicking a goal, in which case 30 seconds is allowed before the marker must being his strides toward the mark (position) is preparation for his disposal (kick or handball). In most general cases, the player is keen to dispose of the ball as quickly as possible as part of an offensive strategy, but at times, when the team is struggling, discombobulated or defending a lead, they will take as much time as is allowed.
Idk they didn’t show a x6 and x1 and total superimposed with the scoreboard to illustrate that better, it’s the one big complaints I have about the video
FUN FACT: a study was done and it found that AFL players are some of the most athletic people in the world, topping rugby, American football, soccer, swimming, E.C.T
Amazing players with great highlight reels you could enjoy: - Dustin Martin (Richmond) [my goat] - Lance 'Buddy' Franklin (Hawthorn/Sydney) - Gary Ablett Jr (Geelong/Gold Coast) - Patrick Cripps (Carlton) - Chris Judd (Carlton)
As there's a better video that's ,a beginners guide to Aussie rules to explain and show everything, Afl has been Australia's little secret for ages as we live and love the sport!
The fact they even swap the names for marks and speckys kills me. "You can jump and make a 'spectacular catch'- this is called a mark", so half the people watching think that marking requires a specky, it makes me way more annoyed than it should.
I don't know about it being a 'better' video; the one advantage it has is it explains scoring, other than that the 'cutesy' tone gives me the shits. I love the American voice-over, it is perfect to get outsiders in, I just wish they had explained the scoring, then it would have been perfect.
The fact that this video has freedom units was the big reason I chose this one over the newer one, I (and another Aussie in the chat) explained the scoring system after he cut off the recording, I also mentioned the AFLW. But you’re right, the fact that they don’t properly explain the scoring is the only thing that lets this one down.
The first Australian rules game was played in 1858 and the game was invented for cricket players to play to keep fit the the off season. Best game in the world...Go Geelong Cats 2025. Second oldest club in the world(1859)
I grew up with afl (was vfl when I was a kid), and had no idea it was anything special til recently watching US citizens watching the vids on RUclips. Thanks for appreciating it.
If you get the chance, check out this three ( 3 ) videos. 1 - Mason Cox : " Don't believe in never " Mason is American playing AFL. Mason journey from the U.S. to the AFL. Great to see you react to seeing our great , unique game for the first time. I just subscribed in repsonse to your enthusiasm for Aussie rules. In answer to your questions: How do they know when to bounce it if there are no distance markers on the ground? It is an instinct based on playing the game for most of their lives. You develop a feel for how often to bounce it. Same for the umpire, who has to judge whether the ball has been bounced every 15 m (roughly equivalent to 16 yards, which he says in the video) and for the crowd, who will yell out "too far!" if they think the player has run more than 15 m without bouncing it. It would not be practical to have distance markers on the ground because the ball can be moved in any direction. The scoring is explained poorly in this video (there is a more recent version that does a better job). The first number in the score is the number of goals, the second is the number of behinds and the third is the total score. In the example given, Collingwood (boo!) scored 20 goals and 10 behinds and had a total score of 130 points (20 x 6 + 10 =130) and Carlton (boo!) scored 18 goals and 12 behinds for a total score of 120 points (18 x 6 + 12 =120 120). The behind is a bit like a tiebreaker. If both teams score the same number of goals, it is likely that they will have a different number of behinds, so the winner will be clear. There are 216 games per season and there are only 2 or 3 draws in a season. I'm not sure why the commentary says the Grand Final is attended by 90,000+, since it is always just over 100,000 (100, 007 in the case of the 2013 Grand Final shown here between Sydney and Hawthorn - yay!). The record attendance was 121,696 in 1970 at a time when the rules about stadium was more lax and they packed the spectators in, with lots of them standing. Yes, the season is opposite the NFL, since both are winter sports and our winter is when you have summer. The 2025 season runs from 6 March to 27 September. Pretty sure you will be able to access it from the US. You could get a VPN and subscribe to Kayo Sports if there are no local options available to you. Why would you kick to another player if you can throw it? Because you can't throw it. Disposal by hand is only allowed as a hand pass, where you strike the ball with a fist from the palm of the other hand. You can kick the ball a lot further than you can hand pass it. The game not 129 years old; it will be 167 years old this year, since the first game was played in 1858. It was invented as a way of keeping cricketers fit in winter. The origin associated with cricket explains some of the connections between the games: it is played on a large oval and many footy grounds, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Sydney Cricket Ground, Gabba (in Brisbane), Adelaide Oval and Perth Stadium are the major cricket grounds for their respective cities; both sports are adjudicated by umpires rather than referees; both sports are governed by the laws of the game rather than rules; what would be called the sidelines in most football codes are the boundary in Aussie rules. The game was codified in 1857, making it one of the oldest football codes in the world. The 129 years probably refers to the origin of what is now the AFL (which started as the Victorian Football League in 1897). Some recommendation: 2024 AFL Grand Final highlights: ruclips.net/video/d6tkMo2ToZk/видео.html Best marks of all time: ruclips.net/video/7AjcFfBvIcs/видео.html Best goals of all time: ruclips.net/video/KnaK272SLvM/видео.html Regarding picking a team to barrack for (never tell an Aussie that you root for a team; that means that you f*ck for a team), we are all incredibly biased, of course, but I think it is worth considering Hawthorn (the Hawks), which was the team that won the Grand Final in the video (the first of three in a row). They have been the most successful team in the AFL over the last 50 years. They have had a lean time since the heady days of the "3-peat" (2013-2015), but are on the rise and have some exciting youngsters who have brought a lot of excitement at the club.
You live in Maine a lion has a Mane, so your team is the Brisbane Lions. They won last year. Maine Black Bears is the local team the Brisbane lions used to be Brisbane Bears.. It's all connecting
It's called a "mark" because in the early decades of the game they would literally "mark" the ground where the kick was caught. Back in those times they also had "place kicks" where the ball was (optionally) placed on the ground at the "mark" and then kicked off the ground, especially when kicking at goal. The last time this happened was in 1955. The speed of the game has become a major factor in winning and has increased exponentially since 1970 when Carlton came from 44 points down to defeat Collingwood in the Grand Final by "playing on" at all costs rather than stop/starting. Speed and endurance are key factors in the modern game.
7:20 The box score means goals, behinds, total score. For example Collingwood has scored 20 goals which is worth 6 points each, and another 10 singular points, adding up to 130
12:08 The score that you were looking at was 20 10 130 vs 18 12 120. It works as follows: Goals...... Behinds..... Total (20 × 6) + (10 × 1) = 130 vs (18 × 6) + (12 × 1) = 120
Aussie Rules was created to keep Cricket players fit during the off-season. Now there's a sport to confuse and amaze you. I would recommend you react to Cricket Explained for Baseball Fans. By the way, Cricket was played in America before Baseball; over the last decade or so, the US has re-established a National Men's Cricket Team.
Created in part by cricketers, not for cricketers. It was an embellishment on Rugby. The codification of the rules involved members of the Mcc but it was not explicitly for cricketers that it was codified.
Cricket? I don’t want to bore than man to death, jeez. I went and bought some paint just so I could paint a wall and watch it dry, more interesting than cricket.
@ Tom Wills was a cricketer, but he was the only one, and the MCC was not involved. In fact they banned football from the MCG for three years, showing how little they thought of it.
11:00 yeah a handball is mostly used for 5-20m apart from teammates. We mostly use kicking, it controls just the same as handball and can get to a teammate 15-50m away. Or even 60m if its a clearance kick
Love your enthusiasm mate. Crowds average around 45,000, but a couple of top teams playing can get anything up to about 90,000 people for some regular-season games. The grand final always closer to 100,000. Last season’s Grand Final in September attracted 100,000+ fans. When they all scream together you would not believe how electric the atmosphere is. At the Grand Final or any other game, parents take their kids because those crowds are one big happy family, and there is only the odd idiot because everybody is there to enjoy the game. Nothing like the trouble making fans in some overseas sports. It’s more than a game, it’s a way of life for Australians and very much the glue that holds the community together. NRL, (rugby) struggles to get over 15,000 fans to their match of the day. Soccer is even less. (Most Aussie rules fans don’t think much of rugby or soccer.) The score line of 20-10-130 means 20 goals x 6 points each = 120 pts + 10 behinds (points) = 130 total points. You can have less goals than the other team, but more total points which is the winner. (Example) Team A, 14-8-92 (team A wins with more total points, less goals) Team B, 15-1-91 (remember the first figure is goals multiplied by six points each) When you take a mark (catch) you can play on, (keep going) or stop on the spot and take a free kick where the opposition is not allowed to touch you. The umpire will blow his whistle every time someone marks the ball, but if the player does not stop and plays on, the umpire will call, “play on.” (Mark is also the term that describes where the player took the mark, which other players are not allowed to encroach over) Various free kicks. If the umpire sees a free kick should be given for an infringement, but a teammate plays on, the umpire will call, “advantage,” and let him keep going. This keeps the game flowing rather than hindering the team by bringing the ball back for the free kick. Goals. The 50 meter arc is only a guide. Players can kick for goal from any part of the ground. If the ball is touched by any player of either team from when it leaves the boot and before crossing the goal line, it becomes one point. (If the goal umpire is in doubt, they will call for a score review, which involves a slow motion video replay.) After each goal the ball is brought back to the centre of the ground and contested by two ruckmen as you saw. All players must resume their original positions at that time. Behinds. (Points) The square marked on the ground in front of the goals is where the fullback kicks the ball back into play after a behind is scored. Handball. Ball held in one hand and punched with a closed fist with the other. Handball can be given to a teammate from any direction. Throwing the ball is illegal, having to bounce the ball and having to handball instead of throwing adds extra skill element to game. 15 metres. What they said is badly explained. What they should have said is that you have to bounce the ball any time “BEFORE” RUNNING 15 mtrs. (NOT EVERY 15 MTRS.) Most players bounce after a few steps to avoid going beyond 15 m, which would see a free kick given to the other team. To say it another way is, “You can’t run more than 15 m without bouncing the ball.” Umpires are good at gauging 15 mtrs) These guys are super athletes, who run flat out for up to 15 km per game, whilst being harassed, bumped, and tackled. They have mostly trim, super fit bodies and need to have an all-round athletic ability to carry out the various skills required. Each quarter with extra time runs for about 30 minutes, which means they’re running around for two hours apart from breaks between the quarters. To explain how fit they become, pre-season training begins Monday 7th of November and continues until March of the next year, when the new season begins. A free kick is given against a player who kicks the ball over the boundary line on the full, or purposely kicks it towards the boundary line. Otherwise if the ball runs over the line during play, a boundary umpire tosses the ball back in over his head. Similar to the centre bounce start, two tall players called ruckmen jostle and try to hit the ball to one of their own players. This allows for a neutral contest. There are too many ways free kicks can be given to mention here. Best to search the Internet for books/videos on the rules/laws of AFL. That oval ball has a mind of it’s own and won’t bounce properly unless you know what you’re doing. However considering that most Australian babies have a football in their hands before they can walk, they have plenty of time to grow up practising it. Junior clubs are all over the country, and there are kids of all ages that bounce the ball perfectly, as well as mastering the other skills. The top team at the end of the regular season is called the “minor premier.” But we don’t care about that really, it’s those finals and who wins the grand final that we go nuts about. There are two parts to the final eight, we’ll call them the first four and the second four. Teams play-off in the first four and get a second chance if they lose, they then play the winners of the games in the second four and the losers of the second four are eliminated. If you search around, you will find a broadcast of AFL games in America, the UK and other places. The season is now over and will start a new season in March 2025. Aussie rules is played as an amateur sport in many countries in the world, If you look it up you’ll find AFL leagues in your area. Because it’s amateur it’s nowhere near as brutal as our game, and it’s more a social type game played for fun with beers and barbecue afterwards. In America they have the USAFL, which comprises 40 different leagues including a women’s league. Beginning in 1859 our game was codified before any of the other sports, in other words we started it so we didn’t copy other sports, it was the other way around. It was actually invented to keep cricket players fit during the off-season. It’s debatable that some aspects of the game were taken from the aboriginal game known as Marn Grook, where aboriginal people have been kicking around a ball of possum skin for centuries. Welcome to the most exciting game on the planet. Once again I am blown away by your passion and excitement. You would fit right in with the screaming fans at a live game. Cheers. (It’s law that overseas reactors must follow the red and white Sydney Swans…🦢🦢🦢 I made the law ha ha😹) The Sydney Swans are consistently in the finals most seasons.
So much misinformation here. For starters the AFL averaged 38,000 not 45,000. The NRL averaged 20,000 not 15,000. I get you don't like the sport but you don't need to lie to make AFL look good. The truth is the country is split between Rugby League and Australian Rules Football. NRL gets higher television numbers over the season and the AFL get bigger attendances. Both sports are awesome and are apart of of Australian culture.
Now-retired Shane Crawford was one of the game's biggest runners. He would regularly clock up 20-22km a match, and opposing teams would often rotate 3-4 playesrs against him because he'd just run them ragged.
@@B-tr9kz can’t figure out why anybody would want to watch the bum sniffers. It has the equal skill of opening a bottle of soft drink. If I want to see biffo, I’ll watch boxing. Of course they watch it on television because who would want to part with money to watch such a boring game. Funny how rugby is played in many countries of the world, but not one of those countries features in the top four in the world for weekly attendances for rugby. (AFL is the fourth highest) SCG crowds for Swans are nearly double the NRL match of the day. According to Roy Morgan research company the “only” individual sports team in NSW to have over 1 million supporters, (1,2 million) is the Sydney Swans. Enjoy your day. 🦢🦢🦢
Also during the Preliminary Final 2017 Richmond V GWS. The had decibel mics set up near the Richmond Cheer Squad. They Recorded 135db. Being on the ground GF 2017. You can feel the sound hitting you when the banner went up. Was the most amazing experiences I have had the honour to be involved in. Yes I have a jacket covered in patches and badges. lol. The AFL world cup has achieved something no other code has ever done. There is a combined middle east team of both Arabs and Jews playing as brothers. The game is too fast to be distracted. Good old "White Line Fever"
Welcome to the best game you've never heard of. 😊 This homegrown game has been around since the 1850s. Lots of Aussie Rules players have gone on to be successful punters in the US. Cheers! PS. You might be interested in a vid about Mason Cox, an American playing in the AFL, called 'Don't Believe in Never".
Knowing how often to bounce the ball while running with it comes with lots of practice. They get so familiar with it they don't even have to think about it. And if they think they can ignore it the umpires are also very skilled at eyeing the distance as well and will stop play and give the ball to the other team.
@phaasse Why not? I guess so anyone who reads my comment learns that women now play it in case any women are interested and so women in America know they can play it but hey. Why would you ask why I say it? Are you insecure about women playing sport?
If you throw the ball the other team gets a penalty. You can hand pass it or kick it but the accuracy of both is exceptionally high for AFL level players. Plus you can kick an afl ball a LOT further than you could throw it and the field is massive - each field is different but the MCG that was shown is an oval 160 metres long post to post and 141 metres wide. About three times wider than an NFL field and more than one and a half times as long. One of the biggest differences between NFL and Aussie Rules (or almost any other sport) is there is no calling for a time out. The umpires stop the clock for stoppages of play but a game with almost 2 hours of game play is over in less than 3 hours start to finish.
I like your attitude mate, and that you didn't continually interject with dumb questions the video was about to answer. If you decide to follow the game and make more videos, you will certainly gain Australian subscribers, but not so much if you never interact with your comments section. Share a little love with those who comment positively, reply to comments you find interesting.
The most obvious reason to kick rather than throw would be for greater distance, as the legs are generally stronger than the arms, and also longer, which gives you greater leverage.
Throwing the ball is to easy, you must punch it to another player. Kicking a round ball thats to easy, kick this egg shaped one instead. Running with the ball, again to easy, you must bounce that egg shaped ball ever 15m. Welcome to the greatest game you have never heard off.
You must bounce the ball before running more than 15 metres or 16 yards. In wet weather the leather ball becomes sodden and very heavy, slippery and doesn't move well, so a player may bend down and touch the ball to the ground. It's sometimes safer to do this every few metres rather than overrun, which would result in the umpire (referee) giving the ball to the opposing player as a penalty for carrying the ball too far
@@tommcvry At least five... AFL, soccer, rugby league, rugby union, gaelic, and anything else I missed - and there WILL be something... Oh, IIRC, there are some "American Football" clubs in Aussie, so that's six...
No, it doesn't. Footy is AFL, RUGBY is rugby union League is rugby league Soccer is soccer Only two states care about rugby, and soccer is hardly ever spoken off unless it's a World Cup... Only on the east cost they mess that shit up by calling everything footy.... Rugby is like gridiron (America football) You hardly ues your feet....
This 66 year young Aussie, likes your enthusiasm after just a 10 minute video explaining the game invented in the state of Victoria, originally invented to keep cricket players fit in the off season, with only the wife's & kids watching.. but it grew very very rapidly 😊
The rules are set, but they are enforced by an umpire. They decide, and regardless, what they say goes, this has changed a bit for goals, where they do use technology to check,,but in general play, whatever the ump says is what goes. They might be criticised later, though it's pretty frowned upon for people within the game to do it. The greatest coach of all time, norm smith, got sacked after winning like 7 premierships, because he called an umpire biased.
The home and away season commences in early March and runs through until late August. Match days can be any day of the year depending on the time of year and when some Australian public holidays occur. The finals are in September with the Grand Final (Australia's Superbowl) played on the last Saturday in September. Remember time differences so our Grand Final Saturday may be Friday in your end of the world! Enjoy
The rule regarding 16yard bounce is better explained by saying you can bounce the ball when running to buy you another 16 yards, but if you run more than 16 yards the umpire will award a free kick to the opposition. So most players will bounce the ball much sooner than when they hit the 16 yard mark. They dont need line markings because most people learn in juniors how far that is through experience. Its generally considered a rookie mistake to overrun.
The 16 yards (15 metres) are more or less guessed at from experience. The rule of thumb is 10 running strides max per bounce. Most players will be looking to move the ball on before then by either kicking or a handball.
Tigers Supporter here and have had the honour to help hold up the run through banner in both Grand Finals 2017, 2019. One thing about a goal. It is the only football code that to score a goal. It must be by foot only, not by the opposition. Can't not touch the post or another player from both sides. Can not score an own goal. Basically, the only things the ball can touch is the lower leg area of the player kicking the ball and the ground surface. If the ball touches anything else, it is a touched behind and only one point. If the defending team kicks the ball through the defending goal it is still one behind. Mid field players can run a half marathon distance during a game and some can get to 7-8kms per quarter. And half that is at a full sprint.
Answer to two Questions, when running with the ball, 16 yards is around 10 steps before you must bounce the ball And its starts the season after the NFL and finishes just before the NFL starts again. I love the Richmond Tigers & Seahawks
Just to put you out of your misery. When looking at the scoreboard, the first number(20) is the number of Goals scored and are worth six points each(that's 120 pts); the second number(10) is the number of Behinds scored and are worth one point each(that's 10 pts), the third number(130) is the Total Points scored which is made up of the point value of Goals and Behinds.
They should explain that the 'final score' they demonstrate shows how many goals, then how many behinds. So it's the final figure that shows who is winning That is, if you see 20 10 130 you'll know they've scored 20 goals (worth 6 each), 10 behinds (worth 1 each) and then the cumulative total
Kicking the ball travels further and if caught (marked), they can take an unimpeded kick, particularly useful if you're in front of goal. Secondly, AFL is a winter sport, so it would be opposite season to NFL. Seasons do overlap a little bit in September. AFL season is March to the start of September for the regular season with finals (playoffs) completed by the last Saturday in September.
The AFL began as TheV.FL.. Aussie Rules Football is played by 18 players on the cricket ground. Fans Barrack for players wearing Guernseys. It’s called ‘Barracking’because The British Collonial Army were at Victoria Barracks Melbourne in the Early Days, and they played in the V.F.L for some years in the late19th Century. The largest M.C.G. Crowd was in the 1960’s when they reached154,500 before they stopped counting.
There is a newer version of the video out, l suggest you watch that version. Also if you want to watch a game l suggest Collingwood v Brisbane 2023. It was one of the best grand finals in the last couple of decades. If two higher followed teams play the Grand Final you would get a much bigger attendance than 100,000, but that's basically the grounds limit. So many supporters miss out on attending the GF every year.
remember the bit where it said how you can move the ball? You can run, handball or kick, Throwing is against the rules and will give the other team a free kick. Not to mention these guys are so accurate by boot they can kick it way further than the best quarterback can throw (and the whole team does it, not just 1 guy) and still hit their targets.
11:03 So, that has an easy answer you can't throw it. A handball is using your fist to punch the ball out of your hand to another player and it's both shorter range and not necessarily as accurate. And the season is from March to September.
Love your reaction, you would fit in well in Australia. Watch some games but also see if you can watch some of the pre 1980s games. There weren't as many rules then such as tackling below the neck and above the knees and they would have these amazing all in punch-ups. They were really fit then and very hard men. Watch those for a giggle.
Season starts in 50 days time plus it’s perfect if ur a nfl fan our grand final is always on the last Saturday of September so week 3-4 of nfl season the start of the season is march 6 we also have a draft system like American sports but with added spice to make it more dramatic draft night takes place on November 20 and goes for 3 days Wednesday Thursday and Friday
The score board. 20 10 130 means 20 goals at 6 points each which is 120. 10 behinds at 1 point is 10 Points. So 120 + 10 is 130. And get yourself on the Hawthorn Hawks. This is the tram you need to go for. They are the most successful team of the modern era. Season is usually from March and the Grand Final is usually the last weekend in September
Season starts in early March to September so does work with the NFL season They are not allowed to throw only handball the ball or kick to the other end which is why they kick it to each other Hope this helps :)
If I could be so bold as to recommend the mighty Western bulldogs. Which its teen colours also shares the same colours as your national flag and just to put a cherry on top go. And watch the 2016 ifl grand final. It was a history making event
How the score works eg…. Essendon 10 11 71, vs Collingwood 8 10 58…. The math woks as first figure is worth 6 points aka a goal. Second figure is worth 1 point aka a behind… so Essendons score reads 10 goals 11 behinds for a total of 71 points. Hope that makes sense.
Yes, it is a wild game that draws on a range of skills. There are many games available on RUclips including Grand Finals. I always find the Grand Finals with the Hawthorn Hawks (brown and gold vertical stripes) the most interesting. But I am a biased as the Melbourne based Hawks are my team. Their home ground is the stadium in the video you watched, this is the MCG or simply “The G”. Please note we “support” or “barrack” for a team, we do not root for a team. In Australia “rooting” is something else entirely. Footy is an autumn/winter game, starting in early March with the GF in September. This year the season start 6th March.
That stadium in the grand final the Melbourne cricket ground the seating had been redone and the stadium now holds over 100 thousand, they don't throw the ball because your not allowed if you do the other team will get the ball.
Scoring. Remember the main goal is worth 6 so the final score as displayed is 20 10 130 so 20 x 6 goals 120 and 10 'behinds' are worth one point each ergo. 120 + 10 gives you the total on the right 130 .
Per head of Capita Aussie Rules is the most spectated sport in the world, the record attendance was back in 1970 with 121,696 spectators at the MCG, since then standing room has been replaced with seating and it only holds 100,000 people now. The Collingwood Magpies are the most supported club with home games averaging over 80,000 and a million plus through the turnstiles every season, they are also the most successful club of all time with the most premierships and the best win rate over 128 years of the competition. 🏳🏴
AFL season runs Mid March through to end of September and is now no longer 22 regular season games but now 24 season regular games before finals begin early September.
Maine does not have a sister city in Australia, but it does have one in Japan, Aomori. Maori is sister cities with Tamworth NSW. So your best bet is Sydney Swans so you are supporting your city.
Most people have a team from their home state. If two teams from each state you choose one close to home. Most footy fans have been following their teams all their lives, or as long as the teams have been playing. Tasmania is supposed to be a new arrival for the next season which starts April.👌
Been a regulated game for 160 years. Your summer is our season. A kick can travel 60meters. Watch the 2022 grand final for a good game. 2024 was a good game as well. Midfielders run over 10miles a game.
@macdac9861 Well they call it hard tackling, but it's nothing compared to clothes line, shoe string, body checking or just throwing people around. In the AFL footage they show there's little contact, while in American football it's all about stopping forward movement any way you can. Not as much as in the past, they do give penalties now for using clothing (pulling on the shirt, grabbing the shoulder pads at the neck or pulling on the face guard) because of the high incidence of permanent crippling injuries or deaths, at least 9 deaths caused by football injuries. While Australian Rules Football has had 7 during games or from game injuries, three of those were heart related. Including highschool and college, there were 16 American football related deaths in 2023, 11 in 2021. I don't have data for other years, so those might have been unusually high years. But the point is even with protective gear, American football is dangerous, some say too dangerous.
@@bartonbagnes4605 when have I mentioned gridiron? You said you aren’t allowed to hit hard in AFL and I said you can. Now you’re saying it’s not as hard as gridiron. But now that you have mentioned it, outside of the stupid head to head contact in gridiron AFL contact is just as brutal
You cant throw the ball, season is April to September. MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). There are 18 teams - 2 from South Australia, 2 from New South Wales, 2 from Western Australia, 2 from Queensland and 10 from Victoria.
If you’re looking for a team to follow, then check out the club that started footy back in 1858. Melbourne are the oldest team, formed by Tom Wills of the Melbourne Cricket Club after devising the game to keep the cricket players fit during the winter. ❤️💙
Probably one of the best reactions of What is AFL, the beginners guide to AFL is a much better video. Sone of your facial expressions were fantastic. Great reaction. 🤙🤙
The ball must be bounced atleast once "within" 15 metres. And remember, each goal is worth 6 points. And a behind is worth 1 point. So, if you kicked 5 goals and 3 behinds, the total score would be 33 points. 5 goals x 6 = 30 plus 3 behinds = total 33.
Can't throw it that would be a free kick...you have to hand pass which is like a volleyball serv.... and if you mark it when someone kicks it to you, you stop and control the next play. If you hand pass it, then you can welcome unnecessary pressure sometimes
its the umpires who are responsible for calling holding the ball if a player doesn't bounce the ball every "16 yards." i believe it's 15 metres in australia where each step is assumed to be about 1 metre. so essentially, a player can take 15 steps before bouncing the ball. it's also approximate, so most players try and take out the grey area by bouncing it more often than required. ultimately though, the umpire is the one who makes the decision. there are four field umpires on the ground (due to its large size). there are also boundary umpires which are responsible for making sure the ball stays within the playing field and make calls if the ball goes out of bounds. there are also goal umpires who assess whether the ball kicked through the posts is a goal or a behind (point).
The score -Collingwood had 20 10 130.... that means there were 20 goals at 6points, 10 behinds at 1 point, totalling 130...that why they won as Carlton has less 6 pointers, even though the had more 1 pointers. Hi from Brisbane Australia....
Gump calls soccer "footy" on Hammer Dahn! But during covid, while there were no good American sports on, Pat and the boys got right into AFL, and even interviewed Mason Cox. You should react to the Pat McAfee show discovering AFL.
Best team Collingwood. Game is older than 120 years, codified in 1858. Fox has some of the games. Our season runs from Feb/March through to the last Saturday in September.
Youd kick to another player for a number of reasons: first, distance, second if that player marks the ball he gets a free kick, third if that player's opponent isnt as tall or as good in the air as that player then you kick it in high so the opponent has less chance to impede the mark. Just lots of reasons.
No throwing allowed - must handball
Goal = 6 points x 20 = 120 plus 10 behinds ( 1 point each) =130
I love to see people discover this sport. It’s THE biggest sport is Australia. Keep watching more please! 😊
Why do you think I had to put it in front of him?
I’m Spacewolf.
@@davelister2Thanks mate! It’s the greatest game in the world
The score is easy when you know what it represents.
20 10 130
18 12 120
The first number of 20 is the number of goals (6 points each, so 20x6=120), the second number is the behinds (1 point each, so 10x1=10) and the final number of 130 is the total score(120+10=130).
Now apply that to the second line and you get 120 as the total.
The team with the most points wins.
Sorry, didn't see you explain it, I just did the same haha
Yeah this video the AFL put together does such a shit job of explaining the score. "Goals are worth 6, behinds are 1, here's a random scoreline that we'll highlight without explaining the layout and not bother telling you we add it all together either - fkn good luck you lot"
Yeh yhat was weird that the voice over didn't do the breakdown.
@@indyspud they fixed that in the updated one from a couple of years back. I don't know why they haven't removed the old one?
I did explain it to Saucey after he’d stopped recording (I’m the aforementioned Spacewolf) This video, despite being older has more easily digestible information for Americans, mainly their odd measurement system.
This is why Aussies are coming over and taking in the Punter positions in college football.
We are taught to kick as little children.
There’s a 7 foot Texan, Mason Cox playing for Collingwood, go and check out his journey, he had never hear of AFL and now he is a respected professional.
All Collingwood supporters love big Cox
"respected"LOL Only if you support Collingwood. To everyone else, he's a mouthy thug that played 10 good minutes
Took him a bit to earn the respect, it wasn't just given, which makes his story even better imo
A good video of mason cox's journey to the afl is 'Don't believe in never'
Respected is a stretch from anyone not Collingwood, He's cheap for the salary cap thats about it.
America has it's own Aussie Rules competition, the USAFL; which has around 50 teams competing in zones across the country.
oooh, good to know!
7:12 first number is goals - 20x6 points=120. Second number is behinds - 10x1 point=10. 120+10=130.
Idk they didn’t show a x6 and x1 and total superimposed with the scoreboard to illustrate that better, it’s the one big complaints I have about the video
This whole video upped the production vid of the older one but has so many errors in explanation
FUN FACT: a study was done and it found that AFL players are some of the most athletic people in the world, topping rugby, American football, soccer, swimming, E.C.T
Amazing players with great highlight reels you could enjoy:
- Dustin Martin (Richmond) [my goat]
- Lance 'Buddy' Franklin (Hawthorn/Sydney)
- Gary Ablett Jr (Geelong/Gold Coast)
- Patrick Cripps (Carlton)
- Chris Judd (Carlton)
Franklin is an absolute flog, almost as bad as fevola and he needs to be cancelled like Kyle and Jackie O were in Victoria
You forgot Eddie Betts.
As there's a better video that's ,a beginners guide to Aussie rules to explain and show everything, Afl has been Australia's little secret for ages as we live and love the sport!
Def fills in the holes that this one doesnt cover and also the womens game .
Agreed

Few points: Sydney v Hawks was 2014. Players often judge distance before bounce by their steps to mention a few
Unfortunately Kayo somehow recognises VPN usage and refuses connections. I know because I tried it and failed when not in Oz 😢
@@gregduncan3242 Oh, that's a shame. I guess he could get some games on 7.
You live in Maine a lion has a Mane, so your team is the Brisbane Lions. They won last year. Maine Black Bears is the local team the Brisbane lions used to be Brisbane Bears.. It's all connecting
Originally the Fitzroy Lions
It's called a "mark" because in the early decades of the game they would literally "mark" the ground where the kick was caught. Back in those times they also had "place kicks" where the ball was (optionally) placed on the ground at the "mark" and then kicked off the ground, especially when kicking at goal. The last time this happened was in 1955. The speed of the game has become a major factor in winning and has increased exponentially since 1970 when Carlton came from 44 points down to defeat Collingwood in the Grand Final by "playing on" at all costs rather than stop/starting. Speed and endurance are key factors in the modern game.
There's also a girls/women's league with, AFAIK, the same rules - VERY fit, tough women who are still, for the most part, darned attractive!
7:20 The box score means goals, behinds, total score. For example Collingwood has scored 20 goals which is worth 6 points each, and another 10 singular points, adding up to 130
12:08 The score that you were looking at was 20 10 130 vs 18 12 120. It works as follows:
Goals...... Behinds..... Total
(20 × 6) + (10 × 1) = 130
vs
(18 × 6) + (12 × 1) = 120
Aussie Rules was created to keep Cricket players fit during the off-season. Now there's a sport to confuse and amaze you. I would recommend you react to Cricket Explained for Baseball Fans. By the way, Cricket was played in America before Baseball; over the last decade or so, the US has re-established a National Men's Cricket Team.
Origin myth.
@ That is often the attitude of people who do not understand the game and are not smart enough to appreciate it.
@ Tom Wills was a cricketer, but he was the only one, and the MCC was not involved. In fact they banned football from the MCG for three years, showing how little they thought of it.
I’ve got a mate who was born and raised in Maine and he played footy with me in 1992 in Western Australia
11:00 yeah a handball is mostly used for 5-20m apart from teammates. We mostly use kicking, it controls just the same as handball and can get to a teammate 15-50m away. Or even 60m if its a clearance kick
Looking at your back wall, you have Red and Black hexagons. Red and Black happen to be the colours of one of the teams - Essendon Bombers.
(Most Aussie rules fans don’t think much of rugby or soccer.)
The score line of 20-10-130 means 20 goals x 6 points each = 120 pts + 10 behinds (points) = 130 total points. You can have less goals than the other team, but more total points which is the winner.
(Example)
Team A, 14-8-92 (team A wins with more total points, less goals)
Team B, 15-1-91 (remember the first figure is goals multiplied by six points each)
When you take a mark (catch) you can play on, (keep going) or stop on the spot and take a free kick where the opposition is not allowed to touch you. The umpire will blow his whistle every time someone marks the ball, but if the player does not stop and plays on, the umpire will call, “play on.” (Mark is also the term that describes where the player took the mark, which other players are not allowed to encroach over)
Various free kicks.
(If the goal umpire is in doubt, they will call for a score review, which involves a slow motion video replay.)
After each goal the ball is brought back to the centre of the ground and contested by two ruckmen as you saw.
To say it another way is, “You can’t run more than 15 m without bouncing the ball.”
Umpires are good at gauging 15 mtrs)
These guys are super athletes, who run flat out for up to 15 km per game, whilst being harassed, bumped, and tackled.
Cheers.

The Sydney Swans are consistently in the finals most seasons.

Funny how rugby is played in many countries of the world, but not one of those countries features in the top four in the world for weekly attendances for rugby. (AFL is the fourth highest)

Knowing how often to bounce the ball while running with it comes with lots of practice. They get so familiar with it they don't even have to think about it. And if they think they can ignore it the umpires are also very skilled at eyeing the distance as well and will stop play and give the ball to the other team.

One goal = 6 points therefore each goal plus behinds = end score.

@abcnit Small dick syndrome makes men very insecure about women playing sport
You're also not allowed to throw it, only handball
And the punch is made behind the ball, not under it as in volleyball.
To be fair it can be confusing, even in australia, that the word "footy" can describe three entirely different sports.

Our new season starts in March. Keep an eye out and enjoy. I am a West Coast Eagles fan but I enjoy watching all the games 🏉
Enjoy
I want to watch too!! Never heard of this
The season starts in Match through to September
New season starts soon 😀
The rule regarding 16yard bounce is better explained by saying you can bounce the ball when running to buy you another 16 yards, but if you run more than 16 yards the umpire will award a free kick to the opposition.
So most players will bounce the ball much sooner than when they hit the 16 yard mark. They dont need line markings because most people learn in juniors how far that is through experience. Its generally considered a rookie mistake to overrun.
They normally measure the travel distance by the steps. Most players aim for less than 9 step before passing or bouncing
The Usafl Maine cats play in Portland. A friend supports them and goes to their games. They are always after supporters and spectators.
Best game played by the best athletes on this planet ,go pies
6:55 - Reading the scoreline:
20 goals + 10 behinds = 130 points, ie (20*6) + (10*1) = 130
18 goals + 12 behinds = 120 points, ie (18*6) + (12*1) = 120
So it's a high-scoring and close match. :)
They should explain that the 'final score' they demonstrate shows how many goals, then how many behinds. So it's the final figure that shows who is winning
That is, if you see 20 10 130 you'll know they've scored 20 goals (worth 6 each), 10 behinds (worth 1 each) and then the cumulative total
Pat McAfee and his boys LOVE footy!
The season starts in March with the finals in September and the Grand Final is the last Saturday in September.
The score board. 20 10 130 means 20 goals at 6 points each which is 120. 10 behinds at 1 point is 10
Points. So 120 + 10 is 130. And get yourself on the Hawthorn Hawks. This is the tram you need to go for. They are the most successful team of the modern era. Season is usually from March and the Grand Final is usually the last weekend in September
Season starts in early March to September so does work with the NFL season
They are not allowed to throw only handball the ball or kick to the other end which is why they kick it to each other
Hope this helps :)
If I could be so bold as to recommend the mighty Western bulldogs.
Which its teen colours also shares the same colours as your national flag and just to put a cherry on top go. And watch the 2016 ifl grand final. It was a history making event
And he would be set up for a lifetime of disappointment. 2 Flags in 100 years of being in the competition.
Closest teams are Boston Demons, or Montreal, Quebec City or St John Bulldogs (New Brunswick). Pick a team, go see a game, maybe join a club.
The season starts in March. No throwing, handball only, so get into it!👍
6:38 Translate the scores:
20(Goals) 10(Behinds) 130(Total Score)
20(x6) + 10(x1) = 130
120 + 10 = 130
That stadium in the grand final the Melbourne cricket ground the seating had been redone and the stadium now holds over 100 thousand, they don't throw the ball because your not allowed if you do the other team will get the ball.
You don’t have to bounce the ball exactly every 16 yards (15 metres). You just need to bounce it before you run further than 16 yards.
You also need to watch -Russell Crowe explaining Rugby League which is being played in Vegas in March from 2024 to 2028
Scoring. Remember the main goal is worth 6 so the final score as displayed is 20 10 130 so 20 x 6 goals 120 and 10 'behinds' are worth one point each ergo. 120 + 10 gives you the total on the right 130 .
March until September. Goal = 6, Behind = 1. Therefore 20 10 130 is 20 (goals 20x6= 120) 10 (behinds 10x1=10) total 130.
Basically, if you get a goal six points, if you try and miss you still get a point, so you get rewarded for trying basically.
Scorecard - C'Wood 20 goals x 6 each = 120 + 10 behinds x 1 each = 130. Carlton - 18 x 6 = 108 + 12 x1 = 120.
yes are seasons off set so you can go from nfl to afl seasons with minimal down time. your winter to are winter
What do you do when your state hosts 10 of the 18 teams?
Season starts in March.
AFL is over 120 years old, older that any of your sports.
And the rest, it’s nearly 170 years old
Been a regulated game for 160 years.
Your summer is our season.
A kick can travel 60meters.
Watch the 2022 grand final for a good game. 2024 was a good game as well.
Midfielders run over 10miles a game.
That's an intense sport. Just because hard hits aren't allowed, doesn't mean full speed collisions don't happen.🏉
Hard hits are most definitely allowed
@@bartonbagnes4605 what AFL footage have you seen?
@macdac9861 Having watched videos of the "biggest" hits for both, the AFL are definitely not as bad.
Trying to explain AFL to an American, is like telling them we walk around with no guns.
inner city retro poofter comment,
You cant throw the ball, season is April to September.
Each goal is 6 points so 20 goals equals 120 points. and then add all the behind (single) points.
Can't throw it that would be a free kick...you have to hand pass which is like a volleyball serv.... and if you mark it when someone kicks it to you, you stop and control the next play. If you hand pass it, then you can welcome unnecessary pressure sometimes
its the umpires who are responsible for calling holding the ball if a player doesn't bounce the ball every "16 yards." i believe it's 15 metres in australia where each step is assumed to be about 1 metre. so essentially, a player can take 15 steps before bouncing the ball. it's also approximate, so most players try and take out the grey area by bouncing it more often than required. ultimately though, the umpire is the one who makes the decision. there are four field umpires on the ground (due to its large size). there are also boundary umpires which are responsible for making sure the ball stays within the playing field and make calls if the ball goes out of bounds. there are also goal umpires who assess whether the ball kicked through the posts is a goal or a behind (point).
you should watch highlights of a good game, 2023 grand final is a good recent one
2018 was a cracker
You might like to see an Australian comedian's take on American Football-"Jimmy Rees, the guy who decides the Superbowl" 🤪🇭🇲
20x 6=120 (goals = 6 points) + 10 behinds/ points equal 130 (a point is = to 1)
The score -Collingwood had 20 10 130.... that means there were 20 goals at 6points, 10 behinds at 1 point, totalling 130...that why they won as Carlton has less 6 pointers, even though the had more 1 pointers. Hi from Brisbane Australia....
The reason we don't throw the ball mate is because it would then be called Rugby or American Football 😮!
Wrong, cold pies. Go Cats
Youd kick to another player for a number of reasons: first, distance, second if that player marks the ball he gets a free kick, third if that player's opponent isnt as tall or as good in the air as that player then you kick it in high so the opponent has less chance to impede the mark. Just lots of reasons.
