For those who think that the 9th dan is losing, "Keiko" means "Practice". He as a master is giving a lesson to the other fighters and this is not a competitive match.
thank you, i don't understand a word, but it seemed to me that this was not competitive cause the black ones were usually very agressive and some engagement were just way too one sided.
04:38 is maybe one of the greatest Kote I've ever seen. You can't hit a Hachidan (8.Dan) like that. The applause shows how amazing that strike was. This is an awesome level of skill.
1st, he killed the ki (spirit) of the Hachi-dan. 2nd, he broke the center of the man with a basic kote. 3rd, the Hachi-dan was amazed then he stood still for like1-2s. probably, he was thinking: what just happened? My 50-year-practiced proves nothing at all. What should i practice now? If the match was a real battle, he would lost his right arm to an 82 years old man. And I think that before hitting the kote, he has already known that the Hachi-dan is about to hit men (see the Hachi-dan's sword doesn't move when Sensei's swords touching? Coz when he's aiming to the man, its very hard for the other to move his sword to the right side), that's why he hits the kote.
You're supposed to turn fast with your shinai (bamboo sword) raised after an attack so you can - in your turn - deflect a hit to your head. With those taps to the men (head) the sensei is basically saying: "you didn't turn fast enough my friend".
I dunno whats going on at all, but the dude in the white... wow hes masterful, hes literally playing with the dude in black. Its so... effortless.... amazing.
Just stop and think about this: The 9th Dan Kendoka (the guy in white) is 82yrs old, amazing for his age! A 9th Dan in Kendo is absolutely amazing and MUST be respected (a life-long achievement)!!! ***Also Keiko, is a training exercise! Im honoured to have witnessed this footage, and it too is my lifelong quest to master myself(body & spirit), my mind and my sword!
I just started practicing and this is an exhausting sport. One practice encounter and I need to catch my breath. For him to last 10 minutes at his age is very impressive.
Try screaming non-stopping for ten minutes straight. Your lung and throat will hate you, and you would feel your brain just grow bigger than your skull. Anyway, Kendo practice often doesn't leave you a moment to catch your breath, the part when the men in black continually striking the Ninth Dan with little time to recover (4:50 - 5:40) is basically the norm of every session. I remember doing that three times in a row, had a minute break and then back at it again.
If you do something then it has to have sense in it. Screaming is pointless. Guess it can affect some inexperienced fighter, but that is it. Proper breath is much more important. So this is just some kind of traditional bullshit.
When you start kendo you give everything, more than you actually need. Later on your kendo will become more of a mindset, you will become more efficient and your kendo more precise and minimalistic
Taunting the opponent is a secondary role as far as "kiai" is concerned. Proper breathing, first and foremost, increases the power behing the blow. Mastering it is of great significance.
There are 3 requirements for scoring: 1) Hit a valid target (head from top, wrist, side of torso, for experienced fighters also forward thrust to the throat). 2) When hitting, stomp with the front foot. 3) when hitting shout out, often attackers shout out the target (head, wrist etc.) in japanese. All three actions together need practice and are meant to demonstrate determination, representing the unity of soul, sword and body... :) The man in white is a grand master, very few reach 9th dan.
As posted by JeongminPak: While reading his opponent's mind movement, Danaguchi sensei leads in the flows and changes of weakness and strongness of the counterpart. His stable posture and dignity, in particular, not collapsing body movement and his eyes reading the opponent's reaction are the highest state that only he can show.
He actually did. The only reason it couldn't be heard very well is because his kiai isn't that loud to begin with (his kiai earlier as a reference). Besides, this was a demonstration so no need to go full out on his part.
Me.. if at 82 years old I can still practice I'll be happy. Now he can do it and still give those young guys less than 1/2 his age a hard time. Fantastic.
@chucknorrispranks it's not just playing tag, it's cutting although the cut is not as deep as koryu kenjutsu. Light strike usually won't be considered valid in kendo. And one should keep in mind that a shinai is a representation of katana, without it, Kendo is not a budo but just a stick game only.
Past a certain point the fun is not to win but to pass on what you've learned. You can also think of this as a demo of the teacher's skill at nurturing his students.
And for the part you don't get the variety of movements on the fight, it it's true, there are just 4 points in kendo. But the real fight here is not to actually be faster or stronger than the other person, it will surely help but, what this old masters teach is the ability to impress your enemy so they will move the way you want them to move so you can strike/counter strike them first. It is what is well learned at your last years of kendo :)... veeery difficult.
Whilst I started Kendo rather late (40) to be thinking about achieving a very high level, if in 40 years I'm still as mobile as this Sensei, I'll be more than happy!
One on my teachers started when he was 36 and now he is now 7th dan. He is in his early 70s now, but I he is still very strong and moves quite well. I started when I was 33 and am hoping for high rank in the distance future myself.
if you see him hit, and him seemly doing nothing about it, or letting them. it means he gave them the strike, this is a tradition in kendo, letting the younger ones (not in age, but in level, so it can happen to 60 years old sensei) hit them in order to build their confidence and spirit.
What creates greatest ripple between broadsword and katana is the difference in speed.Due to reason movement of katana can be moment of instant death it puts great emphasis on readiness against your opponent since if hes damn good and starts attack first you are as good as dead.
Russians are not Vikings. Scandinavians are Vikings, Russians are Slavs. There is only a similarity in phenotype because the two peoples inhabit a cold region with little sun. Vikings were master sailors, and Russians were master farmers.
I'm not really a kendo master so I may be wrong, but if I'm correct this is just a demonstration for the student (guy getting in all the hits) to show what he's learned. That's why the other guy was getting hit so much. If I'm right that is. lol.
I forgot to add something. I say this is Kendo and these men are Japanese because, the writing on the banners are clearly not Korean and in fact in Japanese. Also a banner says NHK, which is a TV Station in Japan.
Yeah, hes maintaining his balance and his sword drops slightly, at 82 to squat down like that its probably a bit of a strain, especially after more than half a century doing it.
Kendo isn't just about whacking the opponent, it isn't just about being effective, more energy conservant and all that. You can't deny the spirit part of kendo. You don't enhance your body with it. You enhance your mind and spirit, your inner strength, your courage. You can't really compare the two. True, I don't know much about fencing, but it doesn't relly seem all that spirit related.
japanese armor is heavier than just a chainmail hauberk would be. its more comparable to plate armor in that respect and it's certainly not lightweight. chainmail just was never something that wasn't introduced to japan or most eastern countries. but their armor worked well for their needs and fighting styles. if strait one handed swords and shields were a common thing in japan back then, armor would have been made to better protect against that.

Yeah there is a show called the deadliest warrior they examined all ancient warriors the samurai did beat the viking in the simulation. The final episode was the two best which was a samurai vs a spartan. The spartan won. Always someone better.
splinter, Keiko is not about winning, at all. But you are right, many kendokas now days just throw their shinais randomly to get hits, instead of just creating one clear cut, as it was before the Meiji Restoration...
This is truly a beautiful demonstration of what very high level Kendo should be. Taniguchi Sensei is a rare jem of an example of what all Kenshi should aspire to. I personally have been fortunate enough to have had keiko with Ishida Sensei and to anyone out there that thinks this is easy, I say put down the supersized Happy Meal, come to the dojo and try for yourself.
I agree with you. I hate all this fuss about history. Btw Koreans don't claim that Kendo is their invention, they renamed this art to Kumdo. Basically Kendo and Kumdo are the same thing with a few tiny differences, ( usually because of traditions ). Anyway this is Kendo we're talking about not TKD or Karate. " KARATEMAN83 I THINK YOU SHOULD STOP WRITING USELESS COMMENTS ON THIS PAGE. I hope I made a point and wish that nobody else posts any stupid history arguments on this.
...and now that its rules are so sissy, WKF is doing a hard campaing to be accepted. TKD has no big merit on entering the Olimpics because it was on Seol ´88 when entered as exhibition and then on Barcelona ´92 Spain was strong in Tkd so the rest its history. Tkd is a nice sport(it became a very diferent form from his father art) I like it! and I like Baseball too, to make an example... but the truth its so evident, its impossible not to see... KOREANS COPY EVERYTHING...
... the kanjis of TACHI (sword) of the beggining of kenjutsu (about S. XI) and the kanjis of TACHI that apperars on later periods... its different because the evolution of Swordmanship reached a higher level (the slanted sword did that) and thats why the first caracter of Tachi gained one stroke more... then when samurai were banned, to prevent from extinction it "evolved" into SPORT. Returnig to Karate, its not a sport ITS AN ART! and was to rude to be in Olimpics back then, and now that...
...its obvious that you have no clue as to what you're looking at, but think of it this way, they're just doing real basic practice for a demo. And during practice its not uncommon for sensei to let their students land a hit or two in order to give them an idea as to what they're supposed to do. As for the standing around at the first part, I'd imagine that its real hard to find any opening in that guy's kamae.
It is a ritual fight. For example, about 3 and a half minutes in, the guy in black practices a Kiri Kaiash (I can't spell japanese words in English, sorry about that.) And no real swordsman would use it in an actual fight. (It's the head (men) hit, touch tsubas (or hilts) then alternating right and left head hits, (four forward and five back). This is then repeated before a large head hit with a follow-through.
hey anime boy.. have u dont kendo before?? cuz.. truly. kiai is anything BUT useless... Kikentai ichi.. do u know why this famous phrase has the word Ki in it? it comes from Kiai.. and without kiai, your kendo will truly look lousy. Even the 9th Dan sensei was using Kiai. its not about volume. But everyone in that video did Kiai well, and it made all the difference in the world. right guys?
I was specifically talking about the 5:20 mark but forgot to include it. Thats why my comment seemed like a joke. Im going to assume that part was just a warm-up thing. And I can understand the kiai but sometimes it seems like they just scream for no reason. No disrespect at all. I was just unsure about those two things.
Its KendO not KendOU... And, Champions in Teamfight are the Americans. I am not sure if a korean is kendo champion. Furthermore is kumdo ways different than Kendo because kumdo is much more panic and histeric and so on than Kendo. If you wait at Kendo for a weak point in the defense of you opponent, in kumdo you open your way.
OR,MAY~BE the younger ones just can't see the common sense the elder has...like he's watching from OUR angle, and still going easy. But three minuit sin...I can't tell if they're joking around or not anymore ^_T. OMG,white guy got hit0_0!Guess he's not perfect... I wanna know the rules for this type,or all of kendo.Sorry for ignorant remarks,but...please help me.
@@Corey91666 I want to get started in either kendo or kenjutsu but most dojo's are closed due to covid. Should I try practicing exercises at home or wait? What are your thoughts?
Sorry I still don't understand about the point system. You say you have to run through with your attack and scream. Why did the guy in white (9th dan?? :O:O!) not even attempt a block when the other guy ran past him, screaming and hitting his head? I can't get my head round it =(
My god...I'm only 2:28 seconds in,and I don't even want to make a comment on every move.Even if I could,THE OLD GUY JUST KEEPS OWNING HIM!But I do wonder...why don't they treat this like real swordfighting stead of breaknig off at so many points?IT'S KENOD,ISN'T IT?
dude he is right i'm also a "kENDOIST" at bellveiw in washington and thats what its called men "head" kote "wrist" and Do "wasit". and if you are a kendoist whats are you a member of a fenderation? if so tell me its cuz I think your makeing up shit to sound cool.
avoid hurting your foot....it's the whole foot that hits the floor not just the heal. if your trying to use just your heal, yes it will hurt, (Always)... and don't hit so hard, use your body for the hit instead of using just the foot.
teachers often let the opponent hit in order to encourage them. otherwise would be rude. debana waza is the technique of counter attack while the opponent is attacking and off guard. the white guy counterattacks the blacks wrist (kote).
I´m sorry, i dont understand why people say you cant use kendo in a real fight? why not? maybe the style isnt good, but hell they have the reflexes and a good start. besides i can say they´d kick my ass anytime.exept when i´ve trained for a little longer.
this is like those aikido videos of the young guys just letting the old guy do his shit to make him look good. these guys are projecting all their strikes. like, what is this bullshit at the 3:30 area. and then again at 5:30! gimme a break.
#1 guy, frst move:What was he thinknig, just leaving the balde up and not parrying against someone who obviously would!!Every time the announcer makes the noise that last lnog with the "riiitaa~"that's a point right? At 2:13 I didn't see it.
He folded it before the fight because his other bandana smelled like pooh. I know all about this starwars wannabe plaything there is to know. So just ask me all you want about this game with childlike men who fight with sticks.
Did you even get in bogu, or did you just quit before that? If you can't even take someone correcting spelling you probably never would have lasted very long in Kendo or any other full contact situation.
moon you can google him there not that many of 9th dans out there, but its called kendo and you can do it pretty much any where but i think your out of luck if you wont that guy to teach you
Why doesn that white guy get hit in the head so many times? i can clearly telltht he doesnt even try to block those strikes. why does he allow that guy to hit him o.O????? hudi
the range can be a disadvantage because the ecrima guy would be faster. he cuold use one stick to block the long stick of the kendoand the other stick vould be used to hit the oponent
Take it easy, nothing I said was supposed to be insulting, its just a little odd that someone who actually does kendo would have difficulty spelling something so basic as kirikaeshi.
grade doesnt determine what colours u wear, what about the korean national team? they are all white... their not all 9th dan... however white is traditionally worn by women.
I actually think a guy who has trained filipino martial art like escrima, kali sikaran for example with two sticks would hav taken a kendo guy. not a 9th dan. but still
How does simply correcting spelling equate to being haughty? It was you who overreacted in the comment directly after that, and from there I decided to have some fun.

In the Americas, not many study the art of Kendo, tis mostly an Eastern sport.
I did Kendo in the US for two years and there are at least a couple hundred clubs around the country.
There are a ton in California and Idaho

This is truly a beautiful demonstration of what very high level Kendo should be. Taniguchi Sensei is a rare jem of an example of what all Kenshi should aspire to. I personally have been fortunate enough to have had keiko with Ishida Sensei and to anyone out there that thinks this is easy, I say put down the supersized Happy Meal, come to the dojo and try for yourself.
this feels like a boss fight with god mode on lmfao
But everyone in that video did Kiai well, and it made all the difference in the world. right guys?
wot does the white suit represent? is that higher than a normal dan grade? im new to this, because the old man seems to know wot he is doin
Kendo seems great, I'm thinking about starting to learn it someday.
Did you Start your journey yet?
I know i did. 13 years ago when you wrote that comment :D
So just ask me all you want about this game with childlike men who fight with sticks.
ohh when the old man puts on the hankercheif i thought he was gonna fight blind i was like wow he must be skilled... he is though
