The "story" that I heard was that Heckel increased the wall thickness of the instruments around 1963 (serial number 10700) because they were having trouble with cracking, especially in the top sockets of the boot joint. They also seem to have increased wall thickness again in the 15000s.
This was not bassoon-specific; they also increased the wall thickness of the Heckelphones at the same time. I do not know about the contrabassoons.

I'm a saxophone player. I have been playing tenor for about 5 years now and have been considering taking up a second instrument. I love the haunting sound that a bassoon can make and I want to be a part of that. Can you tell me about adding an instrument or just about starting a double reed in general? I've watched your starting bassoon videos and they only would really help if I had decided to play bassoon already. Could you please give me some advise.

Sure! A lot of bassoonists switch from sax. I was thinking about doing a tutorial especially for this. I will add it to the filming list, if you're interested!

This was very interesting. Have the current production Heckels adopted this longer long joint? I noticed that my first teacher's instrument had a small gap where the long joint connected into the boot. When I asked about this, she told me that it improved the intonation of the low register. Her instrument was a Fox 101. This is all making sense now. Thanks!

NCF8710 some players pull out the long joint a bit if they are very sharp in the low register.

Can you please tell me the length of your long joint and what case you bought for it. I have an Howarth bassoon with a long joint of 66cms. I'm trying to find a bassoon case to fit it. The case I have is stretched at the long joint end giving it less protection than it deserves.

My Heckel Long joint is only a few 1/8 of an inch longer than the typical long joint. It fits in a standard Kolbl case but in the end I bought a custom Bonna Case. I sent them the dimensions of my bassoon and they made it specifically to fit. Here is a video comparison of the two cases that worked. ruclips.net/video/4LvHGQgRL3Q/видео.html Happy Shopping!

@@erynoft Hello Eryn. Just to let you know I eventually ended up with an Howarth Academy case made by Koelbl. It's a perfect size with an adjustable insert for the tenor joint.
Watching your video link I added 10 decent sized books into the case. Boot joint out no movement, tenor joint out no movement, long joint out the case moved to the v shape but not to the extreme of throwing out the bell joint. The only real problem I add was how to fit the backpack straps, I ended up going onto their website for a decent picture.
Thank you again for your help.

@@johnaskin13 Thanks for letting me know what you got. I will be sure to check this case out! I'm not familiar with it, yet. Happy Bassooning.
