I'm glad you got it. And it's beautiful how it starts complex then it gets simpler and then it gets complex again, that piece could be in a movie, a Disney movie.
… lowkey a music promo haha. I dig it tho But in all serious thank you for the good info! I'm in my third year of music comp at Lamar university, which I'm attending primarily because of the generous full ride scholarship they offered me. I'm trying to transition up to a well established grad school so I will be creating a portfolio and filling out applications once again lol
Truuuu😂 Tbh not sure how helpful my content is if you’re interested in the grad programs. The music the grad students write is much more experimental and homogeneous
Great video! I was wondering, are teachers looking for a particular style in applicants' compositions? The contemporary, classical, soundtrack, etc., or can candidates put their music in their portfolio regardless of their style?
Thanks! I can’t speak for every university, but the styles of the composition students at bienen were very diverse while I was there. I think the bienen faculty try to pick students with a range of styles
Hi; I am a high school student interested in music composition, and i've played violin since kindergarten age so i'm relatively familiar with music theory. Do you have any book recommendations that provide a survey or introduction to music composition, or books that adequately introduce all the different instruments? thanks!
Rimsky-Korsakov’s Principles of Orchestration is good. I don’t have any good composition book recs. Composition is so subjective, I’ve personally learned the most from studying my favorite scores
Do you know if Northwestern offers a masters program in which I could get a master in Theory/composition and music performance? Thanks in advance. Btw: Your pieces are fantastic!
Thank you so much for your kind comment! Bienen has a 1 year masters program in music theory, and 2 year masters programs in music theory OR performance. I do not think there are any double masters options that would allow you to study both. The only graduate program available in composition is the Composition and Music Technology PhD program. (Bienen recently discontinued the Composition and Music Technology DMA program.) You can learn more about the degree types here: www.music.northwestern.edu/academics/degrees Hope this helps:)
Ian Soriano The website says, “Scores produced with notation software will be expected to demonstrate skill in using the software as well as compositional sophistication. Handwritten scores are not required, but well-executed musical notation will be considered a positive attribute.” Translation: always prioritize neatness and clarity. If you are writing with traditional notation, a software notation is usually the neatest and clearest. My scores were all notated with Finale. If you are using excessive extended techniques, unorthodox key signatures and/or unusual time signatures, handwritten scores are usually more clear and easier to use. For example, this handwritten score by one of the Bienen composition professors www.eamdc.com/psny/composers/alex-mincek/works/karate/ would be very difficult to notate with a software.
I played piano with the school orchestra for the performance of one piece when I was 17 (we performed it at a couple of concerts) and it was one of the most nerve-wracking things ever. Mind you I didn't feel nearly as nervous about it as I should have done. I could never do something like that again. Yes you can be a pianist with an orchestra, but then the whole thing is riding on you as you are leading all of those people.
how did you decide what you wanted to study in college? i'm a high school junior and i'm still unsure what i want to do after high school. i've been taking private music composition lessons for a while now, but i don't know if it's necessarily what i want to study ..
I just started taking classes in my favorite subjects and eventually decided to declare my majors in those subjects because I really liked the classes. I was also thinking about how I would use my classes after graduation. I knew I wanted to do something analytical/technical after graduation and would keep doing music as a hobby so I double majored in math & music composition
Hi! I’m currently a senior applying to music composition and i’m working on my portfolio and I was wondering if you’d be able to give me some feedback and help me clear up some foggy-ness about how this whole music composition application works
There are a lot of options online like this one I found on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Archives-Spiral-Bound-Manuscript-Paper/dp/B0002GFPA2/ref=sr_1_35?dchild=1&keywords=blank+sheet+music+notebook+big&qid=1589472109&sr=8-35
@tiaratanka Stick with the math major. You may still be able to salvage yourself and your future as the world still needs people who can do math. But composition and the Performing Arts? 😂 Well until I wind up writing the code to automate the rest of the jobs at Starbucks you still have a future as a barista..... unless doordash your thing? I'm not trying to be a smart-ass. This is your future unless you have a sugar daddy. I performed regularly with the CSO both on tour and at Ravinia when I was still an undergrad at DePaul. Your professors will sell you out and disown you after you graduate. Seriously get out while you still can.
Have no idea how I got here, but just finished listening to a musical composition that I enjoyed a lot.
😂🥳💜
I'm glad you got it. And it's beautiful how it starts complex then it gets simpler and then it gets complex again, that piece could be in a movie, a Disney movie.
Thank you so much!:)
I've listened to the whole video , I'll come back sure to listen to more

Feel free to stalk me at my website😊: kitrarazin.com (No, Tiara Tanka is not my real name)
I'm a music major too!
Enjoy the crippling debt and unemployment. Eventually you will wake up and realize it was all a lie
Do the recordings of compositions need to be live performers or can they just be recorded from your computers notation software?
No they don’t need to be live, especially now because the pandemic has made it hard to record people

Tiara Tanka Thank you so much for your help! I’m planning way ahead, and I think Northwestern has an amazing school of music!
Np:) Good for you!
Groot is also hiring
For notation, do they have to be handwritten? Can you make them on notation softwares, or is it not allowed?

@@TiaraTanka Okay. Thank you so much!
can you still play in a major ensemble if you only play piano?

very very beautiful Tiara : Is the composition for 3 flutes and a violoncello : sounds really awesome
Thank you so much!:)
Hi, did you receive an interview for bienen at that time?
No. I don’t think it was part of the early decision composition application process

How do you get the big manuscript books. I’ve been looking for ages as I seriously run out of space.
Tiara Tanka thanks that really helps.👍🏼
Interesting…
In the way watching a car crash you cannot stop is.
Are you not a math major anymore?
No, I’m still studying both. Sometimes I just don’t mention one of my majors if I’m making a video related to the other major
@tiaratanka
