The bloke that originally built a house and sheds on the land around me lost everything in 1828. He sensibly then almost overreacted and moved way up the hill and built my current house. Thankful to him for it. Cheers for the vid Angus.

I’ve been down there at the Evac centre that past 2 nights. We’ve been so lucky this year that no one has required too much medical assistance at the centres, and really not many have had to use the centres due to having their own contingency plans.

Id rather watch this fella than any Network News; especially State Owned Media. Informative, no agendas, just facts. Production here actually put the "professionals " to shame. The Prestitutes would have been hand-wringing and tugging at our heart strings, no mention of the 'wisdom' of living right next to a river. The story here was about flooding, not about how sensitive and virtuous the Reporter and their employer is. Proper Journalism.

And the farmers were fearing a drought but know it floods, onto spring with the typical wind and then a dry dusty summer.

Growing up in Bellerive & Howrah, the Derwent only ever showed its ‘ocean’, or ‘sea’ side to us. Immediate, adjacent to our neighbourhoods, & providing lengthy beaches those in ‘town’ had / have no real familiarity with. Family / relatives ‘across the bridge’ always struck us as having an intriguing distance, even alienation from the salt, the surf, the sand, which always rendered them very Melbournian.
The folk upriver ? It was always stunning to see ‘their River Derwent ‘ akin to the relationship of Richmond villagers to their Coal River.
Apparently placid, wholly fresh, & easily familiar to the outstretched hand.

good stuff. easily solved by not building in the floodplain. at 0:55 you can see the houses built on the crest are safe, the infrastructure on the flats below is gone. should be no construction within the entire riparian area, climate change is going to see more and more of these floods and its too expensive to keep rebuilding.

The closer I get to paying off my mortgage the more I pay for insurance on my home. Build in the valley, build in the hills, either way I feel like the cost of insurance will replace my mortgage in the end. It feels unfair.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but... People shouldn't be building towns and cities on the edges of rivers. Especially in flat, low lying areas. These catastrophic events are only catastrophic because people live too close. You can't control water, no matter how hard you try, but you can control where you're going to build. When a river exceeds capacity, it's going to overflow into every available inch possible, and if someone has smacked a house right in the middle of a flood plain, then that is their fault when things like this happen.
So far, it seems there's been no loss of life this time around with the floods, that's amazing. I know of two fatalities in Victoria from this terrible weather. Glad it seems to be over (for now at least).

    • @ChrisHUTTON-zc4br
