- Today, we learn that a 2x4 can’t support the weight of a bare Toyota Truck Cab.
On rusty part-out trucks, I’ve always removed the drivetrain first, then the cab…
but this time, I’m going to try removing the cab first.

Legitimately helpful video, thanks! I have a 77 Datsun 620 with zero rust (New Mexico truck) and I'm toying with the idea of removing the cab so I can strip and repaint the frame rails
I am currently in the process of doing this to a 1980 Toyota Long Bed from the south, except the cab floors were rotted because it sat outside for years with a broken window. ruclips.net/video/imb9VbzPupw/видео.html
My 1981 Hilux is the opposite lol, the cab is rusty as hell but the chassis only has very light surface rust.
Your cab looks mint compared to mine, mines full of holes in the roof, bonnet, lower doors and floors.
This is due to the fact that where I live in Australia we don't have road salt but rather salt in the sea breeze and morning dew due to our coastal location, meaning that most vehicles rust from the top down rather than the bottom up, unless they are driven on the beach
I'm restoring a 1980 on the channel right now (actually using 2 crappy trucks to make one good 1980) and one of mine is the same... excellent frame but rusty cab.
Never thought another hilux could make me feel good about my rust! Mines looking pristine compared to this!
Haha, welcome to Ohio!
Working under my Michigan salt soaked 96 4Runner was a pain in the ass. It was the donor for my Tacoma 4WD conversion and I'm used to working under clean frame Texas/New Mexico trucks. I could probably have collapsed the entire rear of the frame with a few hammer hits. Which is insane to think about since someone was driving it up until it's motor went and I bought it.
Yikes! That thing is waay more rotten than I thought watching your other videos on it!! Glad mines good 😂
Dirt Garage yeah I'm jealous... Every Toyota truck I've ever bought had rusty frames to some extent.
@@6thGearGarage I had to replace the gas tank crossbar, but that's it!
Dirt Garage I remember that vid... I like how you did it.
@@6thGearGarage Yeah I just used a smaller diameter pipe, bit thicker, and kinda sleeved it into the old bars place!
That rust is crazy. Gotta undercoat the vehicle every year
As a fellow Ohioan, I know the pain of rust and road salt :(
dang all that rust was hard to look at, its gonna be giving me nightmares now ha
Welcome to my life lol
0:26... YOU ARE SO STRONG
What all did you have to remove so you could pull the cab off with removing the engine.
I’ve got a rusty 86 I want to do a cab replacement on.
Here is a video of the full process on my 1980. I also pulled the engine before removing the cab. because I was moving everything to a fresh frame, but I could have left the engine in place but I would have had to lift the cab a lot higher to get over it. @@6thGearGarage awesome thanks for the reply!
My science fair project is to find an alternative to salt for melting ice.
Clearly it’s a problem, and I’m surprised it’s still used.
I’ve read that some areas use a solution based on beet juice, but it is more expensive and still a little corrosive.
Interesting
Try saw dust. Here where i live in Finland we have some kind of experiment to prevent slippery. It wont melt ice but it is rising friction.
What's rust? I thought it was a factory color camouflage
When I swapped the cab on my Truck I used a Homemade Wood beam adapter to my engine hoist and it was easy I just needed people on the front to keep it from Nose diving
I had a buddy unload a complete cab w/ interior from a trailer by putting a 2x8 board through the top of the doors and he balanced the cab on a hoist, under the board in the center of the roof. Sketchy but it worked!
Do you have the part number of the screw and suspension of cabin??
Do you mean the body mount bolts and bushings?
Is it easier to pull the cab off over the engine?
If you use a load leveler, the engine should come out pretty easy with the cab still on. I had someone buying the cab, so I removed it first.
Great Video my friend.
so much cooler when you don't pull the body with an engine puller
You know where i can find a 1992 toyota hilux 4x4 standard cab frame
Everything has rust around here. I'd look for a used one down south/west.
Rust belts finest 🙂 sucks what we have to deal with.
Haha, yep! funny how it's just a way of life and it doesn't even surprise me anymore.
@@6thGearGarage oh the people out west don’t get it, they scrap perfectly fine vehicles 😂 I’ve driven literally death traps like it’s normal because it is normal 😅
Seeing all that rust makes me sad
It's sad that I'm used to it by now. I just picked up a very rusty 1980 pickup that I'm going to attempt to restore this summer.
I live in Alaska so I know all about road salt
Rust = weight reduction bro
Whats rust!!!
