This clip provides a good example of the ravishing tone that drew such praise in the early days of Carreras' career. What a lovely, unforced lyric sound! Such a voice is always ephemeral, a blessing of youth. It cannot be spared by technique, and certainly not by the ravages of illness and age.
The 1970’s were Carreras’ absolutely best years. He should have remained in the full lyric repertoire longer. At this time he had the most beautiful instrument of the 3 tenors in my opinion. His LIVE Nemorino from Covent Garden, 1976, I believe, is ample evidence of this. Hopefully it is still available to purchase.
I agree 100% She is a very wonderful singer. And a great person, also very helpful to opera. I would imagine that this was in 75 or 76, so very early in Carreras' career. She still sounds amazing even though she was at the latter stage of her career.
Thank goodness for programs like this one so that we have a record of the work of so many fine singers. I only wish more had followed her example. It is a pleasure to hear again the beauty of the young Carreras voice.

Rothenberger made a Deutsche Querschnitt of La Traviata on EMI---I have it in LP!!! It may be buried with me: its a Masterpiece and the German adds to make her Perfect. She was das Beste.

Die Verantwortlichen, die sie bestattet haben, geben leider keine Auskunft darüber, wo sich das Grab befindet. Selbst wenn Frau Rothenberger sich eine stille Beisetzung gewünscht hat, ein anonymes Grab war sicher nicht in ihrem Sinn. Sie hat die Menschen geliebt und die Menschen haben sie geliebt. Warum tut man ihr so etwas an?

Außerdem habe ich auf meine Briefe sehr nette und teils ausführliche Antworten von ihr erhalten, auf die ich stolz bin. Und natürlich sind da unzählige Aufnahmen, die mir ihre Stimme lebendig erhalten. Dafür bin ich dankbar!
Sie war wirklich sehr gut und wie gut sie klingt wenn sie italienisch singt. Zu Unrecht weggelassen wenn man von den grossen Stimmen des 20ten Jahrhunderts spricht....Schade....Aber so ein praezises Intonieren und die schlanke Stimmfuehrung ist heute sehr sehr selten oder ungehoert....
denke ich genau so. Vor allem ein sehr intensiver Ton, eine ausgesprochene Opernstimme. Ich kannte sie eher aus ihren TV Sendungen und wusste nicht dass sie damals schon ein Weltstar war.
she is wonderful (as always), beyond the point of commenting here... but could he sing THEN(!!), he had the talent AND freshens (i find this much better than his recoding with Scotto) i agree with tenorsanyone - it is possible that the "power of youth", is underestimated in singing in general (??) ... another issue is a tendency not to bother when one "has made it" - like del Monaco (also with Rothenberger) just couldn't care less even finishing words with right vowels...

I've noted that people who have mushrooms growing in their larynx tend to sing worse afterwards. Spare us the passagio BS.

@Agorante Carreras recovered from Leukemia, and, sang wonderfully after that, but he always tended to open through the passagio.. probrably sounded better to his ears, but it is NOT good vocal technique and it ruins voices.

CARRERAS WAS DECIDEDLY A GREAT ONE NEAR THE END 70'S UNTIL HE HAD THIS TERRIBLE LEUKEMIA IN 1988 .....
