My nephew owns a Meadery in Nashville The HoneyTree Meadery and his own apiary. TONS of flavors. If you’re ever in the area check it out! Tell him Aunt Kathy sent you! 🐝
I always use 3lb of honey to a gallon of water. Then add fruit if feeling it. It is better the longer it ages.
I made mead one year when I lived in Nome Alaska and didn’t have acess to the fancy Sri lock tops so I used a balloon
The balloon filled with gasses and expanded and I purged it every few days then when it stopped fading it was ready super easy and tasted amazing in the end
What type of yeast did you use?
There's a way to make a bubbler using an empty beer can and a balloon.
Made one of each yesterday and it’s been so fun watching the fruit bounce around like a lava lamp! I used up some mulling spices instead of tea. So excited to try it. Thank you!
So good to see you guys again Fun video!
I hope to see a follow up video. I've never had that before and wondered how you get the tea bags out. 😮
I have never heard of this before. But I will watch anything you put out, as I have been in need of a video from you all! Thanks for showing me something new! :)
You could have gone with Celestial Seasonings chamomile tea that has no tags no many Staples no strings. I feel like even the ink that you left on could change the flavor and influence your Brew.
I’m glad you mentioned that, or even loose leaf tea
Ooohh, that looks delish!
Great to see you!! Looks like an interesting drink 😎
Thank you Rachel!
Very interesting! Never made or had it before!
You are truly amazing!!🥰
I have never heard of mead this was interesting to watch.
Ooo this looks good. I make wine but haven't done mead yet. Thanks for the idea. ❤
This was really interesting and should I need to make this i. Ow think i could, Thanks for that
Thanks for sharing. I like mead and might give it a try. ✌️❤️🇺🇸
My son makes mead. Thanks for the informing video!
I really enjoyed your video. The only thing I would change is removing the dye infused tags from the tea-bags before putting them in your brew.
Going trying this
Thank you so much❤
Nice! Both of my sons love making mead :)
We started ours 3 days ago, two batches to test sweetness out in quart jars. I'm glad to see you guys posting a video, it'll be handy to follow along with!
howd it turn out??
@@hobbyhobbyhobbyhobbynot so good apparently 🤣
Love making mead. I just started a batch of cider mead (cyser). I'm not a fan of sweet meads so I make mine fairly dry. I usually do 1 gallon batches but trying a 5 gallon batch for the first time cuz we got a lot of cider this year.
i was just wondering if you guys were posting videos anymore - have not seen many lately. Thanks for an interesting topic. Never heard of it.
Making mead is so much fun. Been doing it for years. Next try maple 🍁 mead.. so yummy..
Doing this for the first time, can't wait to taste!
The tea helps with the tannic from what I hear. Haven't made my own yet, but soon to start :)
This is interesting. I've never had mead.
I love a good blueberry mead.
I bet the home water would be a great artisan soap addition as well.
Awesome! a art this is being forgotten. I'm going to join you and everyone else to keep the old ways alive.
Thank god for yeast i started with making bread and I stored my left over bread for 4-5 days in the fridge and the dough absolutely smelt like alcohol when I brought it back out lol ever since then..,,, it's time to make alcohol 😂😂
I miss y’all so so much, right now my Bell peppers are going crazy down here in Alabama. I Harvest 22 bell peppers plus I give my next door neighbors 6. I cut the peppers. Up and freeze them. Rachel I got a question, can I use the bell peppers when I make Salsa even though they were frozen ?
For those that don’t know ,if you haven’t got an airlock for your bottles you can use birthday balloons over your bottles and just poke a couple of pin holes in them , when the carbon dioxide builds up it can escape and no harmful bacteria or bugs can get in , they are very effective if you don’t have air locks and bungs .
Fun! I just started a 2 gallon carboy full of red raspberry Mead a few weeks ago. It's my first time, so I hope it turns out well.
I tried mead making for the first time, but I am at stage 3 filtering today🙌🏼
so if one wanted to make xmas gifts of bottles for friends, being the process in mid-summer around bottle around labor day?
I’m interested in the playlist of homemade Christmas gifts. Can you tell me what the playlist is called? I didn’t see one specifically labeled Christmas gifts or anything like that.
I have 8 gallons going for about 2 months now. With being a beekeeper - ya realize HOW much honey you end up with lol. I give it to family & friends but will have 32 quarts in the pantry even after making the mead.
Interested in selling your excess?
The tea is probably added to provide some tannins. Tannins help provide texture, balance, and structure to wine.
Also tea and coffee beverages are acidic so with the tea your adding some acids to your wine as well , other types of acid can be used as well , ie citric acids .
1. It's possible you might get stalled fermentation because of inadequate initial oxygenation - the yeast need it to grow a large colony before the process becomes anaerobic. 2. Wine yeast is generally a better choice - champagne yeast is formulated more for CO2 than alcohol production. 3. Also if you want to be ready by Christmas you'll have to either pasteurise or use additives to completely halt fermentation prior to bottling. Otherwise you'll potentially be giving people festive bombs...
Did you both finished the Barn ?
I assume you sanitized everything? I’ve been making homemade hard cider and I’ve watched a lot of videos and mead making videos. Thanks for sharing!

I never heard of Mead before., I do not drink., thanks for sharing I guess this involves a lot of reading to make 10-16-2023❤
I have never done meeds so how you supposed to do it 😊
Use EC1118 yeast And let it ferment to dry 0.094. it will not be sweet but good.
I’d love to try making mead! We have neighbors who have about 70 hives next door. They shore honey but I need to know what I need to ask them for?
As long as it’s honey and doesn’t have plant parts or wax in it, you’re golden because you’re getting your honey straight from the beekeeper. Depending on the honey, the end result will be a little bit different because each variety of honey has a different flavour, which carries through into the mead.
I’ve been making mead for over 30 years.
If you want to try making mead, do so. It takes time but definitely is worth it IMHO. And if you want to keep things as simple as possible but still have the best possible result, I’d advise giving your yeast a little more to feast in except just honey… because to yeast, honey is a junk food diet. That might cause the yeast to produce off-flavours and those can take along time to age out. Either get some yeast nutrient, or make your own.
How do you make a simple yeast nutrient? Easy: take a teaspoon of baker’s yeast (brand doesn’t matter), add it to 1/4 or 1/2 cup of water. Bring to a boil and allow to cool. The boiling killed that baker’s yeast. Live yeast tends to consume dead yeast and gets nutrients from it that aren’t contained in the honey. Add this boiled yeast water to your carboy with all your other ingredients: water, honey, live yeast… (and if your recipe states it, fruit, spices, tea… etc). Pop on an airlock, and let fermentation do its thing.
A little note on recipes with fruit: those involve a few more steps. A good beginner’s hack is to use fruit juice instead of whole fruit if you want a fruity mead ass your first try. As juice contains sugar, you will need less honey.
Go for a recipe that’s tried and tested for your first mead, preferably one with precise measurements. Too much honey is not good for fermentation. Give your mead time to age. Like wine, aged mead tastes a lot better than young mead. Please, please PKEASE don’t try to filter your mead through coffee filters or cloth. It won’t work and you’ll only risk oxidising your mead which will ruin its flavour. Get some tubing and siphon it over into another carboy, bottles, mason jars… And if you like the process, get a hydrometer, binge on videos about how to make mead. There are some really good channels out there. With time, expand your equipment (hydrometer, auto-siphon, sanitiser, airlocks carboys, an assortment of different kinds of yeast, yeast nutrient are the basic things I recommend to anyone bitten by the “mead bug”).
Happy brewing!
Is this considered wine? Never heard of it…. Thanks..🧡
Yes, mead is wine..the difference is that we make regular DIY wine using cane sugar.
Unfortunately I can't even try it. I'm severely allergic to honey. I will be including your recipes with the mead kit we are giving my son in law for Christmas so that he can try it with some of his honey.
1/2 packet of yeast divided between the three carboys? Or 1/2 packet per carbon?
1l2 a packet per 1 gallon
How can it be super sweet when it ferments to 1.000 or less?
Are you going to plant garlic?
Never heard of this
REMOVE the tags from the tea bags!
Lol
Do you have a written recipe?
Put some bacon and Reese's peanut butter cups in that mead. That's most definitely what's up toobz.
Huh?
sultans
We did a wine tasting and one of the tastings was mead. Way too sweet for me.
Thank you for the recipes. Next time pls open the chamomile herb and do not use the bag bc it contain glue that is not good for you. Thx again for the video.
A bit too much headspace in my opinion, but looking good!😊
Geeez lol. This wouldn't work for me with the Camomile in it along with the honey, etc. It's barely 8 pm Eastern time and I'm already dozing off sitting in my chair lol.
There's no sound
Mead doesnt have to be super sweet. It all depends on how much honey you use.
Seeing paper teabags with TABS in it make me so, so uneasy. Bleh. Why do this when you can just brew it and add it to the honey water? There's no way you can guarantee not adding some wild yeast or other microbes with the tea bag, it's just an absolutely unnecessary risk, avoidable by one simple step.
You are bootlegger now.
