  • Beethoven's 6th Symphony in F major, opus 68, the "Pastoral Symphony". This is the fifth movement, "Shepherds' Hymn of Thanksgiving after the Storm", and is performed by The "Orchestre National", Paris, conducted by Paul Kletzki. A 1962 vinyl recording on the Concert Hall label, catalogue number AM-2239. The sleeve notes describe this movement as follows: "Allegretto - The Storm dies away, with a magical three bars from the woodwind, as the skies clear and the sun returns. First the clarinet then the horn play a 'Ranz des vaches' before the violins sing a long and sinuous theme of gratitude. The form of the movement is a Rondo. Several finely worked out episodes contrast with the main sections before the movement and the Symphony come to a conclusion with a muted horn reiterating the Ranz with which the Hymn of Thanksgiving began."
