I painted loads of cars in the 70's and 80's , and we only had enamel single stage with thinners no harder back then . Two coats and they would look like glass, no wet sanding or all that buffing , they do today . A better finish and lasted longer . This clear coat these days can't take the sun , you see cars only a few years old with the clear coat peeling . The good old days , the paint was far better and a fast job.
Yeah, but didn't they change the paints because they were awful for the environment or something like that? Same thing with the dyes they used to use on automotive interiors were very color fast and sturdy but caused every kind of cancer imaginable.
Paint is better today as it is urethane based,I will say it is a lot more expensive so you tend to see cars that have been painted having problems from someone using cheap material or trying to shortcut the job.I know when newer cars are painted in the factory they do not put enough material on one either which also leads to color problems for the shop repairing the vehicle.
I always see factory base coat clear coat peeling burning off ,Why? I spray single stage with clear on top Proves to be more durable no peeling fading burning off ! 🤔🤔🤨
I painted few dodge and peugeots on single stage. White and black. Using paint made in mex, it works awesome and has the same life as a clear coat. (5 years on acrílic single stage and médium quality clear). On the poliurethane single stage, it has 8-10 years of life. Both are for low cost but has very great results and quality. Even I've been sprying pearled red, greys, greens, silvers on single stage on chevys and volkswagens 😁
Depends on the air temperature and if your using a slow or fast hardener. After 1st coat touch a part of the masking tape. If it feels sticky like tape, its ready for the second coat. If its not sticky and feels wet..... Wait longer.
Nice, but the technique is really bad... Its always amazed me when people make vids of painting and have such sloppy technique. Stop tilting the gun and turning it sideways. Youre supposed to use the entire fan, not the bottom of the fan pattern.
Its funny how paint manufactures can make painters jump for joy over a 2k product that will kill them. Its all about the money. get it done fast. quality and toxicity dont make money
i really hate 2 or 3 coats paints, single stage is soooo much stronger, it doesn't peel like cleae coat, I really want to respray my soarer eith just single stage white, no bullshit of clear coat
To be honest if you keep single stage waxed and polished it can last 30 plus years I've buffed out the original paint on first gen s10s and people thought it was fresh
I am spraying Polyurethane single stage with a HVLP at the recommended pressure around 15psi . I love the paint but it does not love me. I get runs no matter how I spray. I tried one tack coat plus one wet coat and it runs, I tried one wet coat and it runs. I am starting to think it has something to do with the hardener. I am using PPG paint. Any comments is appreciated Thanks.
Yes, and he’s within 2-3 inches away instead of 4-5 so I guess if you like a thinner pattern and you want to spray close it’s a matter of adjusting your gun/compressor in this case a lower flow and psi.
Look at 8:22 in the vid- the Tekna gun has a monster fan about a foot wide. It looks like he overlaps a lot. Even and wet! Would have been nice to know which fluid tip, which air cap, how many turns out and air pressure. I'm guessing 1.2 tip, TE20 cap, 4 turns out at 29 psi. Comment?
Like it a lot man and I just learnt a trick today..thanks for that..putting clear coat in the paint for a extra chine..like I does do bike parts that cover ..I am from the Caribbean in the westing deas ..st Vincent and the grenadines..I look at a lot of videos and enjoy ..everyone have they own ways and tips..I like that..You a great day..do what you enjoy best❤👌👍🤛
how much more should i reduce single stage paint then what is allreddy in the mix cup becouse it comes out to thick and causes orange pell if leave it mixed the way i am suppost to. Larry B
If the original single coat paint is good and we just want a repaint do you sand it first before applying the sealer. The reason I ask, is that the paint job that I followed did not give me the right paint so I will be painting over this paint job and I’m wondering how to proceed sealer and the paint or sand sealer and the paint?
First timer here... What do you wipe the car down with before starting to apply the sealer? I have asked a few people with no answer... I really want to spray a van that is used for underprivileged kids. I tried already and the paint is flaking off in places. Please any advice would be appreciated.
As an 18 year old in high school who is in a auto body class, i can do my best to explain this if you still need the info. Before applying sealer, I wiper the whole panel that I will spray, down with wax and grease remover, then I blow it off using a blow gun, and then I use a tack rag. I spray the sealer light as in all I want on the panel is just the color. You don't want the sealer super wet. Again sorry for the late reply, but if you need any further help, i can do my best to explain!
Use single then topped with color shifting powders in high gloss clear. I did single because where I live there is no auto paint stores and it will get keyed within the first year. It was and hit with other people's car doors and carts. Never worth too much work since nobody has respect for other people's things
That is brilliant love it id like to know how the paint is mixed properly and the hardener ?? Well done nice colour and nicely put on cheers Larrysullivan in London
What do you think about adding clearcoat hardener to si gle stage? Any benefit? Gonna spray single stage, should I go with a slow reducer or medium? Temp range will be around 80 degrees.
Great NewYork taxi yellow fella:) You are a master.Golden gands you have got from the big guy upstairs ! Be blessed.Keep showing gorgeous skills in tbe magic spray paint booth.
n I got tiger stripes with my new for this project devilbiss startingline spraying metallic, 22psi gave best spray pattern, slightly heavier on bottom, even when I turn air cap 180 degrees. Air tip clean. Held gun what seemed parallel to surface. sides are good- just hood, roof, trunk.Have 3 coats on and looks better but still can tell. So do I scuff and spray at higher psi and increase distance spraying to fix?
Here on Maui we have high UV . I cannot get clear coat to last on outdoor kept vehicles. I’ve found that white single stage lasts longer with an occasional waxing. I hate to paint but I hate ugly sun burnt cars even more. Older cars don’t look good or right to me with clear coat anyways and I don’t drive newer vehicles anyways. Single stage let’s me sand my way out of problems painting at home. I asked the airplane guys how they were doing it . Now I know why so many planes are white.
I disagree with single-stage being an economy paint job only for fleet vehicles and cheap paint jobs a good quality single stage paint job can be rubbed out in buff to amazingly high loss
What was the bill on this job?? I’m a body guy about to spray single stage for the first time but it’s ford red JM and I’m wondering about coverage… maybe I’ll seal the entire truck in grey sealer
I'm gonna be shooting my car in single stage white this summer. I can't afford to get base clear. Plus single stage white is easy to match. And I still have more custom work to do. This way I can do it gradually and not have a bunch of different colors or shades
I must remember on the very final coat to slow down a bit as apposed to the first top coat. I had runs on the bus i painted today, only on the final coat.. I went to fast and go further enough over my overlaps/ Too much paint on the masking ran onto the surface.. I'm a rookie and the company allows for mistakes.. But I'll practice more on some panels for a few weeks before going onto the vehicles .. Great video and hands down to that experienced painter.. No substitute for experience, very clean professional work.
This is very humble and remarkable for you to post your mistakes.....thank you! This allows us to learn, and for you to learn. If you learn from your errors they are not mistakes but I call them training aids....lol!
Is this shot in Ontario? Pretty sure I worked with Everett when I started in the trade 13 years ago. Almost didn't recognize him without all his gold chains.lol
Hey guys. I have a lot to learn. I am still confused between sealer and primer and epoxy primer. And there is paint with just reducer and paint with hardener and reducer and paint with a clear coat. I painted my interior with single-stage paint. It looked great when I was finished, but it became dull in about a month. It was mason paint I think from Napa. So many questions and not as many answers. Thanks for sharing.👍👍
Hey, I’ll try and clear some things up for you. Sealer always refers to a 2 part primer that doesn’t require sanding before paint. Epoxy primer uses a different resin than a regular primer(primer surfacer). Epoxy provides superior protection, but it is slow drying and doesn’t fill as well. Epoxy can also be used just as a metal treatment or sealer, many of these primers can be versatile and combined in the process in multiple ways. I could not answer as to why it went dull, that would require a deeper understanding of the process you followed.
@@Refinishnetwork Thanks for your input. I am just doing my own ride. I don't plan on doing this for a living. When I get my truck ready for paint, I want to do it once. Right now it is sitting with some parts in red primer of who knows what it is, Paint is dark blue and who knows how old and some bondo areas and bare metal. I was thinking maybe I should spray it with some kind of primer or sealer when I finish the body job and then paint it. I am going with a flat black os hot rod black as my topcoat.
Looks great..."if" someone decided to clear it, would you want the second coat to dry and fix any spots before clearing or while second coat is tacky? Cheers! 🍻
I think the premium lines, such as UNO would hold up incredibly well for a long time. UV holdout, especially when blending is required, clearcoat would be optimal.
I do paint and body work and paint manufacturers base their longevity on a car that is sitting in full sun. Single stage paint in full sun will last roughly 7 years. Base coat clear coat with a production clear will last roughly 11 years in full sun. If you use a high solid clear and do 3 coats of clear instead of the normal 2 coats then you increase how long you're clear will be resilient to the UV rays.
@@Refinishnetwork also it might sound as a stupid question but you do not need to clean the spray gun between the coats? No risk for the paint inside to dry ? Thank you!
The gun man did a great job, his consistency and skill is evident.
I like how he picks up his wet edges as he moves around the car ..... inspiring me to paint my car myself
Great voice over! Explained alot bery Nice job! Love the yellow!!!!

I here ya painted plenty of single stage back in the day, plenty of depth not like the junk sprayed today with no shine or depth.
With the high metallics, and tri coats, it would be next to impossible to spray the new colors and duplicate the depth with single stage.
Talking chalk and cheese
Nicely done- good even motion on the part of the painter; still learning, thank you PATRICK.P
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. UNO is an excellent product.single stage is the way to go on solid colors.
Yellow pigment will safe the world...from red :)

Yellow has to be one of the worst colors to spray if not green
How long should one wait in-between laying the second coat?
Depends on the air temperature and if your using a slow or fast hardener. After 1st coat touch a part of the masking tape. If it feels sticky like tape, its ready for the second coat. If its not sticky and feels wet..... Wait longer.
Excelente trabajo. Gracias por enseñarnos
Nice yellow! One question. Do you have a link to the silver container you mixed the paint in? I like it’s design. Thanks, Tom
Nice, but the technique is really bad... Its always amazed me when people make vids of painting and have such sloppy technique. Stop tilting the gun and turning it sideways. Youre supposed to use the entire fan, not the bottom of the fan pattern.

What gun settings was used in the video?
Thanks for posting this! I'm spraying a VW Beetle with single stage paint and this video reinforced my thinking.
Good luck 🤞
He’s 70 he should be good by now that color is horrendous :( so why single stage and why in the old days ssd single stage popular
Most high end hot rod shops use a high end single stage on there solid colors
Very true at our shop we done 90k car restorations with a badass one stage
You can still sand and buff.

Great Job. What pressure is optimal for single stage?
A lot depends on your paint choice and gun but standard is around 2 bar or 28 to 30 psi.
Why does clear burn off factory base clear paint jobs ? 🚩

Beautiful job.. do you sand it and polish after?
Nice work! Did you only give the car two base coats and stop, or did you also apply a clear coat after your two base coats?
It’s 2 coats of gloss

This is 2k urethane, not enamel. Sprayed with a 1.3 tip and the HVLP aircap.

A good single stage will last years. That's all that people used before base clears became popular.

I'm about to paint our 96 Impreza in single stage white. It will be used our recce car for rally in the US.
Really nice spray technique 👌
Do you add additional reducer to the 2nd coat? Though to me my a Dupont tech rep in the 70s, for painting helicopters
The car looks great.
F base clear I like real paint
how much do you leave between coats?thanks for upload
Do you cut and buff after the paint is cured or once it cures is it 100% done? Thanks

I used to shoot 3 coats in twice around the vehicle, ENAMEL!
SS is not color mixed in clear ..... it’s it’s own thing entirely
Whoa! Banana peel

Whays the proper psi for single stage and amount of material
That is good for tractor renovation
Awesome

How long do you have to wait to apply the second coat?
How many gallons of paint did you use for the two coats?
Don't go out in the spring with this color
Looks lovely , if you get a run in the first coat of single stage do you still continue with the second coat or stop painting
What's the best gun tip size for single stage?? Thanks
Nice job thanks
How much paint did you use to cover the whole car?
That’s gonna be beautiful when it’s done
Put your paint in a freezer its going to last for months
Nice. I think single stage looks different. (According to how you like it). I like it with solid colours.
Can you spray Single Stage without sealer? For instance simply fine sand existing paint on the car and then do 2 coats of Single Stage?
Yes, you can. It may require more coats though depending on the transparency or the color. Yellow is usually fairly transparent.
Looks good how many litres did the car take for both coats?
TE20 air cap?? 1.3-1.4 needle? psi??
I like Everetts style.Hes got his fluidity down pretty good. I really enjoyed the narration. Thank you for this great clip!
