I saw this show when it was originally on TV and I've heard the theme countless times since, but never clocked that about the hi-hats until you pointed it out. What great writing
On old trains in the UK, a bell would go ding ding when it's about to leave the station. Until recently on electric trains the conductor would do the same on a switch to tell the driver to go and you can hear it in the whole train.
If you listen to train horns they're pretty jazzy. That and the sound of train tracks directly inspired rock, city music of the past inspired by a symbol of the city.
For anyone that cares why this is so jolly yet dissonant, train horns are typically two tones split at a major 7th. Dissonant by itself, but by being in major it lends itself to a bouncy upbeat rhythm :)
Missed the chromatic eighth 'low wind' notes before the main melody reprised ;) and the ending piano arpeggio should span a whole rising octave -- but aside from that almost totally perfect! A real core childhood memory evoked, I must have heard this theme hundreds of times when I was young.
Man this theme song will ALWAYS hit. Definitely like a top 3 theme song of my childhood. That percussion just holds things together so well. Great work man!
I wonder if there was ever an ad played at the beginning of a VHS, where the piano track was replaced with a voice over announcing another VHS collection. I feel like a mix like this lends itself well to that
Just want to make a mention that the picture in this video is one of my all time favourites. Absolutely love the reflection of Thomas and Annie and Clarabel in the water. Used to actually find it quite eerie to look at as a kid, but now as an adult I appreciate it for its mood and aesthetics.
Looking at this show now feels strange... the style gives it a genuinity and personality while also sometimes feeling somewhat surreal, like that hot air balloon picture
This is nice. It reminds me of an old steam engine I saw a little ways away from my town. Its out in the woods pretty much abandoned. All that’s left is the smokebox, boiler, and firebox. It was surreal to see it in person. You can see the controls and a small portion of the running board. Next to it there’s an old shack that’s abandoned as well. There’s pipes running from the engines dome that lead into the shack, and others that feed into a big metal box nearby. It’s interesting because it seems like it was used as a generator for a short time. It was kind of sad to see but it was thrilling anyways to see a piece of history like that. The wheels were scattered a short ways away as well.
I always was more fascinated with the backing instruments from the intro. Especially the deep toned Bass so it’s pretty neat to hear a No Lead version of the main theme. Amazing! 🤩
I don't know why when I was a kid I would always hum the tune to the theme like this without the piano included. Glad someone made a version that resonates well with my childhood!

Thanks. I believe they used a Prophet 5 for that song. Using a square wave very similar to the Jupiter’s clarinet. Lots of old synthesisers are like that, as much I like that song. I wouldn’t want Thomas fans to butcher that into another ‘Break My Stride’.

Holy cow, dude! This theme is MEGA accurate! You nailed everything from the Jupiter 6 “whistle” patch to the synth brass, I can’t even fathom how good this is. May I suggest though, if you want to get the “lead piano” sound, I’d suggest you reach out to OneTramBand, as he was the one who composed the original Thomas theme for “Project Tiger Moth.”
Most people don't know that the whole music track was recorded at Abbey Road studios and a full-size locomotive was brought into the studio to get the whistle sound. Ringo played all the instruments as well as performing the voice-over for each episode.
Thomas The Tank Engine, but you could only bring that synthesizer .Comparing to original, it misses that synthesizer 'solo' around 0:45, but it still fits the lighter version of this track. Also, comparing both makes me realize how aggressively 80's this track is.
If you want to record the piano live, you'd need not only a grand piano, but also to voice it like they used to do. Nobody voices their grands like this today (literally no one does), but back then, this sound was on every single Steinway and Yamaha you could find in a professional studio. A very clear and bright bell like sound. Today, as a general rule, all grands are voiced softly and with little overtones, just a pure and arguably pretty boring fundamental. Well done mate! :)
This must have been the hardest one you have ever had to do. When I heard this, I thought it could be part of a scary episode, because of the way it sounded. But I must congratulate you on making this 😀.
