I attended a protest rally, I've called my representatives, I donated to Palestinian Children's Defense Fund and World Central Kitchen, I downloaded books about Palestine, and I'm following creators who are Jewish, Palestinian, or from Congo on TikTok. It's overwhelming, but it makes me feel slightly less helpless to try to take some action. At the same time, a big TikToker is getting dragged for having suggested people take breaks when they need to, but that wasn't bad advice. It's not about looking away and pretending these awful things aren't happening. But you can't pour into others if your cup is empty.

I think it's because I think I know the tiktoker you are talking about. Unfortunately, the people of Palestine 🇵🇸 don't have the luxury. Children have died from panic attacks, and the people can not escape the violence. Also, well, if you're marginalized or poor, you can not take a break and focus on your mental health because it is ingrained in society. Also, the tiktoker seems very biased as they did the: Israeli Jews were KILLED and Palestinians DIED. It's a way to deflect from the violence and use language to fit the narrative they want.

@@cardcaptor1792 I get that argument, but what do you do if you’re a marginalized person trying to do something? Now you’re getting accused of taking a break from others’ marginalization while having to carry your own 24/7. Giving from your well of abundance is so important and having community supports/self-care is vital to be able to pay it forward.

@@cardcaptor1792 I understand but people are still humans, and it is human to take time away from the news and the horrors going on. Yes we can acknowledge this is because we are privileged enough to do so, but again we are human. Not everyone can be looking at atrocities 24/7. You are right, Palestinians do not get the luxury of just taking a break. But if we don’t take breaks, we won’t be able to consistently be in support and solidarity with Palestine. A break doesn’t mean we stop caring, it means we take the time to recoup ourselves so we can CONTINUE to protest and organize and support Palestine. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free 🇵🇸

I think we need to be a lot more OK with people (including everyday people) in the internet not sharing an opinion on every political topic that ever comes up. I think a lot more harm can be done by people regurgitating an opinion they heard based on a 30s TikTok they watched (I HAVE seen this done, frequently, especially recently), than by people staying silent. And I think it's OK too for people to say "I am not well-informed enough on this topic to feel like I should share an opinion on it." Or you can say something simple like "It is awful to see civilians dying/refugees be turned away/rise in intolerant beliefs, and this should not be happening" without sharing an extreme stance or condemning a country or group outright. Maybe after researching you'd come to that stance anyway but at least you would have come to it responsibly. Politics are COMPLICATED. It's OK not to know everything about everything. And please have done your own research (looking at both sides of an issue, from verified sources) before sharing an opinion. I think some situations are certainly more straight-forward than others, but it's always a good idea to do research before spreading potentially false information.

I thought my needs as a human being would be met by now but I have yet to get to where I want to be. Things have gone to shit for me in general since Covid. I feel so burnt out and tired all the time. I thought I’d be in therapy by now and have a drivers license but I’m no where near achieving both those things. And for the first time ever I feel like my beliefs r so different from my family. I think they’re automatically siding with Israel as they’re very Jewish and I feel so weird abt it cuz. They’re all just like “did u hear what happened in Israel” and I just wanna say “did u hear how many innocent people they’ve killed (so far 😢)” but I don’t have the guts. And a couple days ago I actually cried abt the war knowing how many innocent people and animals are dying and suffering. With the situation I’m in I can’t donate or anything cuz I genuinely don’t feel safe to. Lots of people feel at peace knowing they can’t control or do anything but I’m the exact opposite. Seeing my own government fail so spectacularly when it comes to calling for peace and reducing harm or addressing civil rights issues has moved me to act in ways I never did before. Volunteering and activism took me into the streets to see how it affects people on a personal level and also on a community level. It is exhausting, but it is too scary to watch the endless parade of online commitments to ignore or encourage this violence and harm against people around the world, especially the targeting of people who are of specific faiths, cultures, sexuality or gender identity. And that outward look at what's happening elsewhere, has motivated me to address issues faced in my own community, and taught me how to welcome people escaping that violence into my community with care. Folks from Uganda, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Venezuela, and also folks from other states seeking refuge from anti-LGBTQ+ or anti-choice laws. The news will keep breaking my heart indeed. But I want that care to continue to motivate me to find community, not isolate myself in the hurt or antipathy. Having that community doesn't make the issues go away, it just helps me delegate where I put my time and what needs still aren't being met that I can help with. Resistance is necessary.

being an anti-zionist jew right now is really weird emotionally. i dont want to say its hard because palestinians have it so much worse and it feels wrong to even slightly compare my privileged discomfort to their pain, but its a really really strange and scary place to be. nobody trusts me and im back to being secretive about my jewish heritage because this is violence being committed supposedly in the name of jews. its horrible and i feel like a nazi by proxy. ive been to protests, sent letters to my representatives, and it still feels like nothing will ever be enough to help. its why i never went on the ‘birthright’ trip to israel- its not our birthright, i’m ukrainian and puerto rican and thats not even close to my birthright. im sorry if this comes off as self centered, its just a really strange place to be emotionally

Your back to being secretive about your Jewish heritage? That is incredibly sad. There is a community of Jewish people out there for and to support you. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. The situation truly has nothing to do with Jewish people vs. Palestinian people. I am Jewish and I used to feel like you do. I was ashamed I went on birthright, I didn’t think Israel should exist, I didn’t feel proud of my Jewish heritage, but then I realized my Jewish identity is something nobody can take away from me. We have been through immense struggle during the holocaust and throughout history- thousands and thousands of years-getting kicked out of every Arab country… Antisemitism is the oldest trick in the book! Now it’s under the guise of the left. I am as liberal as they come and I can’t stand so strongly for the people of Palestine without acknowledging the suffering and history of Jewish people. There is so much hate and antisemitism out there and happening right now before our eyes… why contribute to that when addressing yourself? Jewish people are beautiful.

I've been depressed for a long time, so it always feels weird to me when I see people say "don't loose hope" or "don't become pessimistic" because I've never been the most hopeful person, and I'm not very optimistic. I care anyway. I can't fully say what drives that, but I am trying, and I do agree that it's the job of the privileged to keep going. So I suppose I'm saying not to get hung up on words like hope and optimism if they conjure up an image of a person you don't think you can be. Just keep going, and if you're like me and don't have a real friend group, focus on being informed and donating and sharing information, it's not the safest to in person protest alone.

It has been quite possibly the scariest and depressing month to be Jewish. The silence, denial, or outright joy over Jewish suffering and death, the dehumanization and suffering of Gazan civilians, all of it has just made me hate being alive. I’ve been so afraid for my family and my friends and I have nowhere to put it, because everyone thinks they’re an expert on Jewish history and persecution in one way or another, and either using it as an excuse for war crimes or using it as a means to express glee at our suffering. It’s just… horrible, man. Anyway, I say all this to say, the opening of this video reeeeaaaally spoke to me.

    • @LaurenCheriSOCFI

What you need to remember is that everyone has reasons to fear others for their survival and that being Jewish doesn’t make you special or make the struggle of survival extra hard for you. This has been the scariest and most depressing month for anyone with an ounce of humanity because this is the biggest humanitarian crisis of our time. Stop speaking as a Jew and start speaking as a human. You must live a life of safety and privilege if you have the audacity to say that you hate to be alive rather than appreciating that you are alive while thousands of people lie dead under rubble and suffer horrific injuries. Imagine your ancestors surviving the holocaust hearing you say “I hate to be alive this month because I’m depressed and afraid.” To say that you hate to be alive because you are a Jew is profoundly offensive to the people who fight every minute of the day right now to cling to life and hope. Only someone who has never truly actually almost lost their life can say “it all makes me hate to be alive”. Think about your privilege and how LUCKY you are to not have been a child born in Gaza right now and how you may use your privilege to help them rather than waste it feeling sorry for yourself.

@@LaurenCheriSOCFIim sorry, I don't agree with you. I don't know in what country so you live, but this month has been absolutely hell for jews and Palestinians. I lost a lot of friends on the terror attacks of october 7, and since ive been recruited back to the military, still haven't processed the pain and the lost. I know for a fact the Palestinians in gaza suffer right now, and i have no idea how it will stop. Im scared for my life, and my life are indeed in danger. Plus, jews around the world see sights that where not seen since the Holocaust. Antisemitism is on the rise like we haven't seen in years

@@LaurenCheriSOCFI How would you know they are living in privilege? Like several Jews were just taken captive, threatened to be bombed, etc. That's privilege to you. The oppression olympics needs to stop. This is the problem I have with online discourse like this. Let other people speak their truth. You have no right to infringe your OWN privileged feelings on a person who is fearful of their own lives. Gaza is not the only place suffering. Think about the countries in Africa who had to endure much worse for much longer, yet still we're supposed to feel more sympathy for one place over another? Comments like this don't help at all.

We can call out the Israeli government without denying the very real pain a Jewish people are feeling right now. And the fact you seemingly separated Jewish people from humans, intentionally or otherwise….. there’s layers of antisemitism so intertwined in this I’m not even sure you see them.

And we need to acknowledge that Zionism and the Israeli terror state makes things worse for Jewish people all over the world. Here in the UK there is a rise in antisemitism precisely because of the actions of those attempting the genocide of Palestinians. Knowledge of history is a tool too. Thanks for the solidarity here. Those of us fighting for the same causes appreciate those others who do have a platform and are prepared to stick their necks out. I was just talking with a work friend about how all the things are happening and I've been so stressed and fried just trying to keep on top of the ways that the world is falling apart. Socially, Economically, Environmentally. And he told me the same thing that these things are bigger than me and my reach. So it's okay to want to change them, but don't burnout trying to move a mountain alone. One if the things that help me is recognizing that there is community in wanting change and it's okay not to be "on" 25/8. Other people are also helping and want to make this better, so if you need a break take one. Change doesn't halt when you leave the room.

I'm 16. I really care a lot about issues like these and seeking change in the world, but at the same time, I sometimes feel rather hopeless to do anything. Some days I spend hours and hours learning and taking in new perspectives, but other days I struggle to even get out of bed. I guess I just sort of teeter in between activism and utter hopelessness and distress, and a lot of my life feels like that as well. Just a teetering between emotions where I'm not sure what I'll do or care about each day. I want to do so much, but then I feel like doing so little. It's confusing, and at the same time I know I can't just do nothing, but a lot of the time it feels like I can't even bring myself to do anything. I also feel like a lot more tangible action such as protests just aren't accessible to me, as I suffer from MD, as well as being incredibly anxious around crowds. I don't know, I know I'm lucky to be able to even *choose* whether or not I do something. I just wish it could be easier to make the right decision, the one I know I want and should make. I guess I just need to sort out myself first, before I truly tackle issues like this. Either way, I love your ability to word things. Down to just how you explain your ideas can make me think of things so much differently. I especially love how you said "it's not for you," because that's so important. It's so easy for people to conflate doing things for others to give peace of mind, and doing things for others *to benefit others* as one in the same. But it's not for you, it's never been for you. I just love to see RUclipsrs like you who can word things in such a way and make me think of things in ways I never even knew I could.

Thank you. I've been trying to tell people to realize that change takes time and that doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything or that things won't change for the best but we've got to be realistic we're laying a lot of the ground works, we're not going to see the majority of it.
We gotta find the hope that we're doing right from the small changes and successes. Or everything that doesn't work feels like a step backwards and makes activism feels insignificant. But if we frame things in terms of history as a bigger picture we can see how closer we are to have a better, decent world, we can see how the changes that people have fought for do have an impact.

Because of people like you, educating and spreading the message and not giving up on it. I used to think it was some evil agenda or conditioning itself, and now I see it’s just basic human fucking rights and love for all. Never feel like you’re losing, or feel defeated- because people may not wake up when you want them to or right away but they will continue to be able to see past what they hold within themselves on a cellular level., piece by piece. Celebrities who haven't spoken up by now won't ever speak up. Expecting someone who benefits from your oppression to speak against it and the system is incomprehensible, insanity at its finest. People need to realize that the change they want to see starts with them, not with Beyonce or Lady Gaga. Will it take twice the effort to get the message out? Yes, but it takes less time than waiting for a person who is paid to entertain the people with their boot on your neck, to speak up and act. Look at Selena Gomez, a UNICEF ambassador. It took days of cyber-bullying for her to finally give a wishy-washy statement and donate proceeds to an Israeli cause. People need to stop waiting and start making moves.

They believe we should all be leaders in our own way, so if one falls down, there are others to step up. I also feel like we can't look away, but we also need to balance that with looking for local community efforts to diversely divest as much as we can from increasingly unsustainable corporate interactions. Don’t think I’ve ever commented on a RUclips video before, your recent vids have made me feel less alone. I’ve been having a hard time reconciling with certain people not taking action and this just took a huge weight off my shoulders…thank you❤
