This shanty describes the navigational challenge to sail from Spain to England, crossing the bay of Biscay. As the Isles of Ushant (north-west of France) and the Scillies (south-west of England), marking the entry of the english channel, are to far apart (about 180 km with 1 league = 5.5 km -> 35 leagues) to be used for navigation, sounding (measuring the depth) was used to determine if the channel of England was reached. This was the case, if the depth reached about 80 metres (1 fathom = 1.8 metre -> 45 fathoms = 81 metres) and the ground (bottom) of the sea was comprised of chalky, white sand. Hoving is a sailing maneuver to slow down/halt the ship, in order measure the depth (to make sounding clear). Then the song lists various landmarks along the english south coast, namely Rame Head (south of Plymouth), Start Point, Isle of Portland, Isle of Wight, Beachy Head, Fairlight Cove, Dover and the South Foreland lighthouse. "The Downs" refers to the sea next to the towns of Kingsdown and Deal, north of Dover. The "Shank Painter" is a leash, securing the anchor to the ships side. The beam, the anchor hangs from, is called the Cathead and the "Cat-Stopper" fastens the anchor. Letting go of both is simply the procedure to lower the anchor. "Clew", "Tack" and "Sheet" refer to the fastening of the corners of the sails. "Haul up your clewgarnets, let tacks and sheets fly" refers to the process of trimming the sails.
I'm an old fart now, but back in my youth I performed at a Ren Fest called Scarborough Faire in Waxahachie TX. Maybe you've heard of it? This song was a major staple. You could hear performers fill the air with the sound of it. Wasn't metal but... I just played a part, walked the lanes, and entertained the visitors as best I can, but The Scottish Rogues and other groups that played songs like that? They were the ones who could make a patch of Texas cornfield feel like medieval England captured with magic and aMUSEment. Good times. Imagine a "Ren Fest" with a steampunk retro future feel. That's where a song like this would fit right in.
YAY!! A new shanty from Jonathan and his crew! That's just what I needed to cheer me up after being stuck in traffic for the last goodness knows how long!! Thank you 😘 Great work by all, as usual 👍☺
coming from a chronically tired student - this is so much better than caffeine. if sea shanty metal gets me through embryology this semester i'll owe y'all a beer
Always nice to hear about another sea shanty. If you want a suggestion, "As the bottle runs dry", from Wolfsbanes. You'd be doing an awesome job on that cover.
Been trying to do a book on fantasy pirate novel, called the Lost Ghosts of The Bermuda where two brothers become nitrous pirates hunting slave ships until their untimely demise, the great grand daughter of one of the 2 would find the 3rd ship after escaping a slave ship after killing it's captain and most of the crew and freeing the slaves and eventually wreaking the ship on an island that holds a secret, a 3rd ship, spoken in eerie ghost stories of being cursed and haunted known only as the Wailing Banshee, for it name was given to it, because the last most enemy sailors saw, was the flash of 72, 48, 32 pounder guns, and steel of swords and flashes of pistols before plundering the ship and sinking it, but like it's name, it vanishes as fast as it came, a haul thick and durable, a length to great of most known countries to have built, and a speed that'd put most swift sailing navy vessels at the time to shame
I'm planning on running a pirate themed DnD campaign for my group in the future, and I would LOVE to use some of your music for it! On another note, ANOTHER BANGER!!!
I thought Rich had the best part in this, the rhythm of that part plus his delivery was really well done, and cool, just really fun. Added some really nice to it and every time I repeated the song I found myself looking forward to his part the most
Nice cover guys. Perfect timing for me since I just watched Jaws and with all the "pirate" song there is still a chance you might one day do "Master of the seas" from Ice age 4.
With the shanties, I do feel that some Great Big Sea is missing in the mix. Always good fun. Wave Over Wave would be a solid one to start with at least to see what they're like.
What if I made a whole album of Shanties???? Presave if you want it! ffm.to/seashantymetal
You have no idea how long I have dreamed of having this.
Yes!!
About time!
I want
yes please
"You go in the cage. Cage goes into the water. Shark's in the water. OUR shark. Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies..." ~ Quint
Still a great movie.
Quint who?

Give me ALL the Pirates! This is awesome!
TIL that Great Big Sea's "We'll rant and we'll roar like true Newfoundlanders" isn't the original version lol
Oh man, what a crew that made this one. Knocked it out of the park with this one.
I'm pretty sure they knocked it out of the darn country with this masterpiece!

Definitely the best surprise of the day!
I’m still advocating you all singing “bones in the ocean” it brings me to tears every time ! 🤣🤣🤣
This was my favorite shanty from AC Black Flag. I loved the longest johns version, and now I am blessed with a superior metal version. \m/
Stars above, another amazing metal shanty to add to the album!! Absolutely phenomenal job, as always!!!
i was kinda expecting a sea shanty version of "all the single ladies" but am pleasantly surprised of this song. is very good
It's actually a map in verse of how to sail from s Spain to London . It's pretty cool, historically speaking
I think we're gonna need a bigger ship to carry this crew of legendary voices
I've JUST decided to replay AC4 after 10 years and this just dropped, can't be a coincidence

Jonathan Young is the best Pirate Metal group on RUclips :D
Alestorm is better imo
I love how it sounds like you're not so much master sailors as you're just plain scaring the sea into not giving you any trouble.
When Captain Jon releases a Sea Shanty Metal it's definitely a good day. But now you need a name for your crew sir!
Magnificent as always, if I was a Spanish lady I would be flattered and sad having to say goodbye to such fine sailors.

I am now begging for a metal cover of “You Are A Pirate” 😂
Goddamn! The first time I heard this was when David Warner sung it as the insane Capt. James Sawyer in Hornblower. THIS IS AWESOME!

TRUE BRITISH SAILORS WHERE YOU AT
This one was truly insane, keep the pirate shanties coming!

Found your channel when "Santiana" had just came out, now the same thing happened. I think it's time to subscribe.
I feel like you're trying to summon Quint from his watery grave!!!😅😅

Stunningly! I once made guitar tab for this song, but of course I’m far from reaching such an epic level )
Ah, perfect timing. I was starting to starve for new metal sea shanty content
Thanks for more shanties

Bro like what is this voice? xD it speaks to my soul
long live sea shanty metal!
Fantastic
YES! LOVE IT!
I really hope the Pirate Byndo art keeps coming. So good.

Holy smokes! Awesome!
Now this is indeed ranting and roaring like true British sailors! (Or Irish sailors, in Colm's case.)
Letsgoooo
Like true English sailors we all have American accents
Except for the Irishman, of course.
Spanish lady that follows you till the hell! Present 🇪🇸
Nice cover guys. Perfect timing for me since I just watched Jaws and with all the "pirate" song there is still a chance you might one day do "Master of the seas" from Ice age 4.
Day 1 of begging Jonathan to cover "Loser baby" from Hazbin (w/ Caleb as Angel Dust)
This is amazing
YOO HOOO ANOTHER HEAVY METAL SONG WOOO 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Nicely done
Hell yeah
How's that possible for this incredible song to have nearly 5k likes.
With the shanties, I do feel that some Great Big Sea is missing in the mix. Always good fun. Wave Over Wave would be a solid one to start with at least to see what they're like.
Please make vinyl presses of this album and starship velociraptor too
If Alestorm could listen to your metal shanties!
Excellent
We’ll rant and we’ll roar like true Newfoundlanders
Beauty! 🤘🙏👏
