    Gadi won, big time.
    I was in Germany in 1999, 10 years after the fall of the iron curtain. Back then, a German (a West German) basically said:
    "we can help the East materially so that they can catch up with us in terms of development, economy, etc... But we cannot help them to think like us, growing in a "free" society and think for themselves, because they were used to be forced-fed with propaganda, and it is very difficult for them to think "freely" and not blame the "evil capitalists" for every disadvantage they perceive they had. The generations that grew up under communism must day out before Germany can be more or less uniformed/leveled , East-West-wise."
    I think the so-called Palestinians are much worse than the former East Germans in terms of the sheer quantity and intensity of the propaganda that they were subjected to. They are next to irredeemable.

      The good thing, to the degree it's feasible, is that most of the Palestinians are young. But I agree, the only way that the US won over Germany and Japan was total dominance and submission and creating a controlled economy, educational, and culturally different life. But the entire country went from blaming the Jews for every ill to blaming itself for the Holocaust in 60 years or so. But I'd also not be surprised if the old guard was seething underneath the veneer of acceptance of the Marshall Plan and US/Anglo/Franco dominance after the war.

    Both are right. But Mr. Doran, may I remind you that after '67, Israel appointed moderate, good, talented young Arsb men to head Arab communities in the West Bank, who were then gunned down, each and everyone one. Part of the Arab mind is love of conflict AND need to protect the honor of the tribe from shame. Compromise means shame to them. And a necessary aspect must be -as Gadi states- that they must be made to feel extreme Arab and Moslem shame.
    Trump's gradually forming plan to ship the Gazans out , assuming use of massive financial pressure, is refreshing.

    The difference between the opinions of Gadi and Mike comes down to Gadi believing that Hamas’s jihadi ideology is too ingrained among Gazans to be able to eliminate it any time soon and Mike believing that it doesn’t matter as long as the Gazans are unable to take action against Israel once a demilitarized Gaza is created; Gazan hate towards Israel will be their own philosophical dilemma as they will have no means to exact the revenge they so yearn for.

    • @Donkraman
      @Donkraman День назад

      Trump’s embryonic idea of moving Gazans to a different location would be best for them and the whole region given the utter destruction that Hamas brought to the land and the lack of a solution after more than a century. Not only would the Gazans have a better future, Moslems in Judea and Samaria would be next in line for relocation if they decide to destroy their own lives by continuing to attack Israel.

    • @slantwild
      @slantwild День назад +2

      I think you're right. And although Gadi has valid points, I tend to agree with Mike (I think Schueftan would say the same thing). The ideology isn't going anywhere, because it is essentially the Palestinian identity. Even if you take land, the change isn't happening in the next 50 years. The culture has to change. Taking land doesn't change any of that. Like Schueftan says, there are different types of problems, some with solutions and some without. The Gazan's and broadly speaking Palestinians are not changing any time soon, and Israel needs to treat it like crime or poverty - fighting to reduce it but not expecting to eliminate it. The idea that Gazan's will "wake up" and change their ideology because they lost north Gaza is misguided

    • @Donkraman
      @Donkraman День назад

      The problem with Islam is that change is not part of its philosophical makeup. The jihadi mentality is not forged in the crucible of competing philosophical forces, but instead stems from a monolithic 7th century mentality that is Islam as a whole. It lacks self-correcting reform mechanisms and, as such, the only viable solutions given the repressive theological mindset are the most extreme ones, a fight to the death or relocation. It’s obvious that short of Iran getting a nuclear weapon (killing Jews and Arabs alike) , Palestinians have no chance to militarily defeat Israel. Relocation is the better alternative even if individual Palestinians choose their beloved afterlife early over life now.

    Loved the discussion and even if it did get a bit pugnacious and heated at times it was all in good fun. Mike, if you don't mind, I'll offer my opinion on the reason for your "generous" attitude and belief that it is possible to re-educate Gazans to drop their visceral hatred of Jews. I think it stems from your Judeo-Christian background (which by definition Gadi must also have) where redemption, forgiveness and loving thy neighbour can be transformational. The problem with this line of thought is that the Palestinians have a very different civilisational ethos. I certainly don't wish to patronise you because you are coming from a position that is admirable, but ultimately futile where the Palestinians are concerned.

However, the continued existence of the Palestinian problem allowed fringe elements in both countries to use it as the main political platform. Which means if there was no Palestinian problem, not only Iran in Turkey, but the entire Middle East would have become friendly with Israel. Yet I’m putting most of the blame on the Israeli Political elites who have failed to see from early on that relocation of the anti-Israel Arabs out of its territories has been the most humane and strategically effective solution of the conflict.

    Sadly, the argument started when Mike (IMHO rightfully) suggested Israel needs to go after the head of the snake, Iran, and Gadi said that there were other existential threats (about which he is also correct). Then they argued back and forth mostly making the same point, with a difference in that Mike says that you have to start with Iran first and then deal with other secondary and tertiary issues later. Then they both agreed that HAMAS needs to go and then Mike says that his whole argument started when he said that you have to start dismantling HAMAS (which is incorrect) was that Israel needs to destroy HAMAS now. (that sums up, oversimplistically how minutes 34-58 went. Then Mike decided that all were in agreement and that Israel should take over Gaza, root out HAMAS, and begin reforming what's left of Palestinian society.
    But the 5 points Gadi outlines was disagreeing with Mike that it wasn't enough to just focus on Iran and leave the Palestinians.

  • @leonid3438

    These are different ways to look at the issues. Mike is right that Iran is the more immediate problem, but then, since the Pals are not an existential threat right now, he doesn't think about them too much. Gadi is right that the Pals are no less an existential problem that has to be attended to just as urgently. It's not just a religious thing. Westerners tends to downplay the importance of ideology in general, which is why the Soviets got as far as they did - destroying Western institutions in the West itself, gobbling up half the planet and being within reach of winning the Cold War, while Western strategists couldn't even keep their own students informed about their countries' history and heritage. That said, Mike is right that the Pals are reprogrammable, as are any people. So Israel better get to the task of de-programming them away from hate.

    I would like to add this thought to the discussion….what makes the situation with the inhabitants of Gaza and Judea etc so different than the citizens of Germany and Japan in the era of WWII is that the Gazan and so called Palestine people are supported in their religion/ ideological beliefs in a greater or lesser degree by the people in the surrounding countries (Middle East) and other countries even further away (think the European Union, etc.) Most of the countries supporting the Palestinians today would have like the European Union for example not supported Germany and Japan after they started their expansion, destruction and killing. The Allies fought a righteous war the Israeli’s are not allowed to be thought of as fighting such a war even though they are. These things are much making the odds against Israel winning so much higher. I love the back and forth between you two.

    Mike clearly doesn't understand incentives. He was also being disingenuous with his arguments. Taking the land doesn't solve the problem, but that wasn't what Gadi was saying. He was saying it would deter them. STRAW MAN DISINGENUOUS ARGUMENT MIKE.

    Trump’s relocation solution makes sense on many levels, especially considering that Gazans themselves want to leave. If the center of gravity of the war moves from Hamas in Gaza to Hamas in Judea and Samaria the Palestinians would have to consider whether they want relocation or destruction of their communities.

      They should be relocated to Saudi Arabia and it’s the only thing Saudis really have to offer Israel. If Saudis don’t agree there should not be any negotiations now. Wait until their oil dries up and they come begging for Israeli technology and help.

    What a fantastic debate between Mike Doran and Gadi Taub on IsraelUpdate20250128!
    By raising the energetic quotient of the conversation, you have inspired me … no you have aroused me, out of my customary indolence, to respond. I have been mulling in my mind a response to several of Caroline Glick’s recent InFocus interviews, which, in respect to the content of the conversations cause my blood to boil, but because the conversations are conducted in such a genteel manner, I haven’t been compelled to leap headlong into the fray. So, thank you both for your passion, and an extremely informative debate.
    But to the point. Rather than analyze the pros and cons of each argument put forth, I think it would be more useful to move straight to the crux of the issue, and solve it. That, obviously, is what should happen in Gaza after the Israeli operations have ended Hamas’ military control. Fortunately for us, a clear plan for a political solution in Gaza, which Mike laments is missing, is in fact already fully worked out, and with the support of the Trump administration, can be quickly implemented to bring permanent resolution to this conflict.
    By the way, the solution is one that both Mike Duran and Gadi Taub, as well as Caroline Glick, are familiar with, although I never hear them mention it. Nonetheless, there it is: a perfect solution that has been thoroughly studied and worked out by … well, by at least one of the greatest minds to address the problem.
    Now at this point, if by some miracle Mike, Gadi and Caroline were to read this comment of mine, I would love to know what each of them would guess that I’m referring to. I’d guess that at least one of them would guess correctly. Anyway, since I can’t really, for the sake of increasing the suspense, drag out this delay much longer, I’m just going to tell you the solution as I see it, and only then give credit to the genius that worked it out.
    -1- Israel announces that it is going to annex all of Gaza and Judea & Samaria (the West Bank) to the state of Israel. (Finally, from the river to the sea Israel will be Israel.)
    -2- Simultaneously, Israel announces that it will be accepting applications from Arab communities currently existing on these lands to form tribal-based sovereign city/states (in Arabic emirates) for those communities willing to sign specific Peace Agreements with Israel. Israel then grants land to those emirate city/states in perpetuity, provided they don’t breach the Peace Agreement.
    -3- The Peace Agreement which each emirate city/state signs with Israel stipulates that they recognize Israel’s existence and that they wish to live in peace (and prosperity) along side of Israel, that they renounce terrorism in all its forms and will not permit terrorists (such as Hamas) in their midst, that they will not allow military weapons in their territories (other than those for personal protection, like hand guns), that they will not permit tunnels to be built, and that they recognize that Israel will maintain security forces in all areas not granted to individual emirate city/states, and recognize that the IDF may intervene if necessary to stop terrorism.
    -4- With the Peace Agreement, Israel recognizes the sovereignty of each emirate city/state, allowing the citizens to form their own government and handle all civic affairs other than military, which ultimately belong to Israel, since all emirate city/states are within the boundaries of Israel proper.
    -5- Israel will allow all permitted emirates to affiliate in a federation, modeled on the States of the United States, linked by transportation and communication networks, thereby creating a “Palestinian State”, which can maintain airports, sea ports and other collective endeavors among the emirate city/states.
    Well, I guess this is enough for starters. As you can imagine, there are myriad details to be worked out. For me, the reservations for Native Americans in the U.S. serve as a rather imperfect model … imperfect because the citizens in the emirate city/states are not granted Israeli citizenship, as was done in the U.S.
    Also, it is clear that Israel will undertake financial programs to help build and establish the emirate city/states, in order to cement the success of those Arabs who voluntarily agree to be friends and good neighbors of Israel.
    But there is one last issue I’d like to mention before concluding, especially since it was at the heart of the disagreement between Mike and Gadi. It is the question of how many Gazans support jihad and the terrorists. Whatever the number, under this solution, there will be one additional community among the emirate city/states, and it will be a prison for those Arabs who refuse to make peace with Israel. Not an open air prison, but unlike ordinary prisons, the inmates can leave at any time, provided they leave the country and never return.
    Finally, I wish to recognize the genius of Mordecai Kedar, the Israeli scholar who laid out the foundations of this plan many decades ago. Thank you Professor Kedar! I predict that you will bring peace, not just to the Middle East, but to our human globe.

    Mike's issue here is that I believe he is operating in a past reality where land for peace is a workable solution here. It works in some circumstances (Egypt) but not in others. If the objective of the Palestinian government and the people is still to destroy Israel even after making a land deal that establishes borders and a Palestinian state - the whole argument surrounding deprograming propaganda/re-education becomes moot. That is currently where we are at today. It isn't the 1990s anymore. People have learned that even offering something as generous as the Clinton Parameters gets you nowhere after the PLO/Arafat refused them.

    A former Israeli Arab Knesset member, Hanin Zuabi, was honest enough to say just a few weeks ago that Hamas represents the Palestinians and that on Oct7th they did not invade Israel but rather returned to their own land. The only way to do what Mike is suggesting is to stay in the Philadelphia corridor and to block Egypt from entering weapons into Gaza, but that would mean a war with Egypt that nobody wants.

    Three of the issues which emerged from the intriguing debate are:
    (1) Why did the IDF adopt the "in and out" strategy in Gaza that it did ? I think it likely that this strategy rather than a "take and hold" approach was seen as the best way to limit Israeli casualties and increase Hamas casualties. If that was the advice given to the PM and he accepted it then Mike's hunch that the policy was not simply a failure of the IDF to do what it had been told it must do could well be right . Even more so if Bibi understood that the US admin would make life even more difficult if it thought Israel was going to hold territory on a long term basis ( whether or not Israel was justified in so doing ).Gadi's claim that Israel did not want to share its plan with the US seems to mirror that concern but if so then Bibi's acceptance of the problematic hostage deal points to an abandonment of that secret plan.
    (2) Gadi's view that Israel taking Gaza (or some part of it ) on a permanent basis would act as a deterrent against further attacks against Isreal has, it seems, gained quite some currency in Israel and not simply from the Smotrich/ Ben Gvir elements. I think it would be instructive to hear whether there is any empirical / historical support for this view and for the panel to discuss this dramatic idea in depth including whether such a course remains open to Israel as a practical matter having regard to the recent hostage deal and the US's and other powers' likely positions.On the one hand Israel's victory in the 1948 war and the 1967 War did not deter further attacks but on the other its failure ( because of US pressure ) to retain territory in the 1956 War and its departure from Lebanon did not achieve peace either; the Peace Treaty with Egypt is in a class of its own and could be thrown into the discussion as well.
    (3) Iran's abilty to seriouly damage Israel is not soley a product of its Hamas proxy. Changing facts on the ground in Gaza will not impede the Iranian nuclear weapons program ( Mike's point ) and ironically destroying Iran's nuclear program, however desirable and necessary, will not end Israel's problems in the region ( Gadi's point ). At least Israel's limited success in weakening Hamas politically in Gaza has not prevented it from changing the landscape to Iran's disdavanatge.in Lebanon and indirectly in Syria.
