Are you tired of bloating, stomach issues and too much sediment in your small intestines? Well this is the video for you ladies and gents. Let's talk about creatine, the different types and why you should or shouldn't throw dollars at them just because they have neato letters at the end of their name.

The only reason I’m taking HCl instead of mono hydrate is because of stomach discomfort . Would love to save money but the stomach problems outweighed the benefits. I was just happy there was an alternative that didn’t make me feel like I was going to always poop myself 😂

Makes sense to me. If creatine HCL is more soluble in water that means that a higher percentage of creatine monohydrate won't dissolve in the stomach and would just pass through, probably giving the user diarrhea. For example, if only 1/7 of the the creatine monohydrate vs creatine HCL dissolves in the stomach, then only 1/7 would ever get to the muscles to saturate them. Despite being cheaper per gram, most of it gets wasted.

I had bloating and gas using monohydrate. I tried HCL and I noticed 2 things: Great reduction of bloating and gas (I suffer IBS so almost impossible to get rid of all the effects, but the improvement is noticeable), and my stamina and strength while training has also increased. I don't know if the difference is due to regular creatine vs HCL, or maybe I am buying a premium HCL while I used to buy generic creatine, but in any case, at least for me, it does work much better with far better results.

Hi, I really appreciate the info you present and your youtube content.
At ca. 3:45 min you stated that the HCl concentration in the human stomach is about 6 mol/l, which I would consider as a very high concentration (even if it is still diluted HCL) and quite aggressive to the tissue.
As far as I know the concentration should be somewhat around 0.1 mol/l (still pH=1).
But as a disclaimer, I didn´t look deeper into it than a quick peek at Wikipedia to reinforce my belief.
Is the concentration you mentionend related to the production of the HCl?
    Youst curious :)

What about creatine in conjunction with HMB? Any benefit? I had been taking chewables of monohydrate that stated the serving was 4 chewables per day. It goes for $30 and it lasts a month of you're taking the recommended 4 tablets. I definitely benefited from it, but I peaked and no amount of food or quality protein helped me past that hump. I started taking pills that were Creatine HCl with HMB and I recently added 10lbs to my max bench after about 2 weeks of taking it. These aren't chewables, but just pills. The serving is 3 pills and the bottle comes with 180 pills, so I get 2mo out of it for the same price. Actually roughly a few cents cheaper at $29.95. I get both from Amazon. So am I crazy or lucky? I don't get the dosage aspect of creatine hcl. If creatine monohydrate has a near 100% absorption (once ingested), (meaning if you take in 3g-5g nearly all of it will be absorbed) why would you need to take less creatine hcl (1g-2g). If in both cases a large proportion of creatine is absorbed, the dosages should also be roughly the same. I would figure HCL's solubility is irrelevant in terms of digestion because the stomach has acid which digests both forms well.

Hey, I have a question. I have an issue with frequent urination when I take monohydrate. I’m talking almost every 25-30 minutes. In the middle of the night I wake up from urgently having to go. It’s not an ideal situation for me while at work/home and it’s very irritating. I just recently discovered HCL and I don’t seem to have this issue anymore and I’m drinking the same amount of water as always. Do you know why that is? For me, the price point is worth it just for that reason alone. Not having that insane strong urge to go is a relief!

Same here with constant urination. I’m thinking of switching to HCL to monohydrate mostly to look leaner

I don't mix my creatine. I put the pure powder in my mouth and then wash it down with a big swig of water. Doesn't seem to make a difference compared to when I was mixing it. It all gets in your system. From my experience taking either one of them hasn't had much of a difference in performance but the hydrochloride doesn't make me feel as bloated.

I've been using creatine monohydrate for a month, without the loading phase, and it definitely got me bloated, i'vd also had problems with my stomach, i think it's very much about the single person, there's not a right answer.

    • @macnfoster

Very correct. It is definitely about the individual experience, and how your body reacts. I used monohydrate for a couple years and noticed the bloating, constantly feeling dehydrated, while having to get up 6 times a night because I needed to pee every hour, on the hour. Changed to hcl about 8 years ago, and haven't noticed a single side effect. Also noticed that I can take a couple months off from the gym and hardly notice any loss in mass and cut so long as I continue taking the hcl.

I've had the same GI issues. Respectfully, to the channel, HCl has helped me greatly. Monohydrate would absolutely wreck my stomach, but it was something that I needed to take; side effects be damned. Got talked into trying HCl out, and aside from the taste, it has helped tremendously.

I've had trouble with muscle cramps when taking creatine monohydrate, not any GI issues but pretty severe cramps in my neck, hamstrings, calves, etc. I have never loaded, but the cramping started happening after maybe a week or so after taking it. When I then stopped a few weeks later, it stopped after a while, when I started taking it again a few months later the cramps came back. However, most people seem to consider creatine causing cramps a myth. Would creatine hcl be better for me or is there something else I could try? I am pretty sure it wasn't a hydration issue either.

probably you are getting dehydrated as creatine pulls water into the muscles and you need to have an adequate water intake . HCL might be better for you . test it and see but you still need to have enough water intake .

I never considered the fact that creatine HCL is just getting dumped into more HCL lol
Also the sedimentation of creatine predominantly happens in cold water below about 50°f where is the human body it's going into is 98°f. And even at 50° If you shake it enough, you'll get it mixed and eventually and it won't come out of solution. Also gets into solution better if you mix it with warm water of idk, ~105°f.
One personal anecdote with my experience on creatine. I take 5g of micronized monohydrate everyday. I once ran out and had to order more I ordered regular granular monohydrate. After using my scale to confirm that my old scoop also yielded 5g of the new product. I mixed it in with 12oz of juice from the dining hall as usual. Drank it while fucking around waiting for the boys. By the time the boys were prepared for shenanigans I was in moderately excruciating gastrointestinal distress. Thought nothing of it, that's just life. This then continued to happen for the next 5 days. At which point I said fuck it and either threw away or gave it to a friend who could tolerate it.
Anecdotally, I now only take micronized monohydrate 5g everyday I have never experienced a negative side effect.

I agree with Athlean-X.

I have a very simple reason for HCL..... if taken in pill form you need six to seven monohydrate tabs vs. 1 or 2 HCL tabs. Of course this assumes that the HCL is absorbed better and you need less MG. At any rate, pills are convenient but not if I need to take 6 or 7 at a time.
