Kudos to DFW Honda in Grapevine, Texas. If you are in trouble or in doubt, seek a professional like Mark, truly a consummate Pro, long on experience at DFW Honda. Jacob will get you scheduled asap. You paid way too much for these motorcycles to be left to shade tree mechanics. 100% agree on a belly pan. A must. Thank you Cruiseman for your clarity & honesty.
This is a simple obstacle to overcome, I have had a similar situation with a stuck oil filter on my last bike. Solution: take your oil filter wrench and drill two 1/8” holes into the bottom of the wrench opposing one another then put the wrench on the filter and using a cordless drill insert two self tapping screws into the holes that you drilled into the wrench bottom. Now take your socket wrench and slowly exert pressure to loosen the filter, no jerky movements. I have used this method several times since and it works like magic. One note though: do not place the holes too close to one another but keep them as far apart as you can while still allowing the screws to engage the filter so as to provide better leverage on the filter. If you place the holes too close to one another you risk tearing the bottom of the oil filter.
I’m a bit jealous that you have a place like DFW Honda to go to. I was in my local Honda dealership the other day and they had a brand new Goldwing bagger on the floor with its windshield installed upside down. So glad I bought your videos as soon as I got my bike home from there.
The 65mm, 14 flute filter from Walmart fits snug, but will slip on a very tight filter. Buy the 64mm, 14 flute, also from Walmart, and it will fit perfectly and not slip. I'm speaking from experience.
Yep, it sure did happen to me. Picked up my new 2024 DCT Goldwing three weeks ago. Jumped on and got 500 miles the first weekend. OK it's a good time to do the first oil change and yes the oil filter didn't want to part way with the engine. Thanks to your video that I watched only a few days before I was able to remove the oil filter. I did use the cheap oil filter wrench and put two holes about one inch apart, tapped them, used two set screws and it worked. Thank you for the advice.
When I first saw the video about this, and even today I believe the oil filter wasn't on too tight, but the dent in the filter had caused the diameter of the filter to be reduced, thus causing any oil filter wrench to not be able to sufficiently grip the filter. The filter being damaged was the cause of this situation. This is a good video on what to do if someone needs to remove a filter that has been put on too tight and the filter is not damaged.
I’ve always had good luck with using Channellock model 209 oil filter pliers for stuck filters.
Cruiseman thanks for update and sharing my input on subject. 😊
Thanks, Chris, for a great follow-up video on the Honda Gold Wing oil filter removal kerfuffle. I'll be executing an oil change on my 2024 Gold Wing in the near future, so the timing of all this information is absolutely perfect. Will keep you posted on what worked for me and what I encounter. Hopefully nothing! Cheers.
I will be changing the oil on Snowee in a couple of weeks. It will be her first oil change. Hope i don't have an issue. Good video in case i do. Thanks, CM
I just did my second oil change last week on my 2018 GL1880B, 6,000 miles. I had a heck of a time getting the filter off, and I put the last one on. As you mentioned the filter wrench from Honda just slips when you try to remove it. I ended up drilling a hole through the side of the wrench and then ran a short screw through it, into the filter. Wish I had taken a picture of the filter, what a mess. None of the flat wrenches work because the filter doesn’t extend far enough below the engine case to be able to get it on. I’ll be buying the Amazon or Mac tool filter wrench ASAP. I only screw the filter on hand tight and can’t believe how tight the bond, oil filter to engine case is. Another awesome video. Wish you would have dry fit the 3 prong wrench on the oil filter on your bike prior to the video, but you probably had your belly-pan in place. Glad I’m not the only one who’s had this problem.
I've not had trouble with any filters, but I did have trouble getting the oil drain bolts removed from my 2018 DCT. The shop had done the first oil change and I was doing the second. I pulled so hard on those bolts I was honestly concerned I would strip them or break them off. Even the DCT transmission filter bolts were so tight that I truly almost packed the bike on a trailer and took it back to the dealership. I've also found other fasteners either broken or so tight they break. Those shallow 5mm bolts have stripped out a couple of times trying to remove them. I can get them out, but have to use an easy-out. That's BS for those bolts.
I will not allow them to change my tires any longer either. I bought a Rabaconda and will do it myself. They are great about getting me in there, but when I was forced to change out my rear tire myself the bolts were so tight I broke an impact socket trying to get them out. I ended up buying a 24 inch breaker bar and new sockets and then got the bolts out. I'm done with them touching my stuff.
My dealership has a great parts department, sales people and even the service writers are great people, but their primary Goldwing Tech is not my favorite person on the planet. Because they allow him to touch my bike I will never let them work on the bike again. I will still buy from them and get parts, but they aren't putting a single accessory or doing any work on it until that guy is gone. (I also found I was missing clips and some panels had broken tabs when I changed my filter. They were the only ones in the bike prior to that discovery.)
I use the flat wrench like you showed there with the drain bolt hole on the handle end and the filter wrench on the big end and it works quite well for me on my 2007.
My 2018 was the same way first oil change. Sometimes one can put a hose clamp on the stamped steel filter wrench and get them off. You can tighten down the hose clamp on the outer edge of the filter wrench and it will grab those filter flats. A slightly smaller strap wrench used correctly would have got it. Or a band wrench and I have two of those Blue Points that I added set screws to but they are larger filter wrenches. Once the standard stamped steel unit slipped I got out my never fail Channellock 460 16.5" pliers. I could have got it off with the hose clamp trick and other tools. But the tips of the Channellock's broke it right lose. It can be a challenge to use the big boys. But I got just enough of the tips of the jaws on two flats and broke it right lose. You did right by not exercising the screwdriver option. You don't have to punch the screwdriver all the way through to get most filters off. The risk of over doing it and punching a hole or cracking the case makes it a no go to people that understand tool craft and what could go wrong. Taking the bike to the dealer taught you some tool craft and your gut feeling served you well. Oil filter was locked on my new MT-09. The filter on the Yamaha is much more accessible and one sight of the Channellock's and the filter quietly accepted eviction as have many motorcycles, cars, trucks and such before. Good Luck
I love my metal strap type and put rough sand paper in between all clean surfaces and boom it’s out
The question nobody is asking is why the hell does Honda torque the filters so much from the factory in the first place? I experienced this with my ST 1300 and will likely experience it again with my first oil change with my Wing.
Good feedback, thank you Sir.
Hi cruiseman you did the right thing rather than destroy the filter and as your goldwing is under warrantee it was the right thing to do , imagine if you had gone ahead and cracked the casing would honda have covered it ? Another point is how many owners world wide have had the same frustration on a new bike ,imagine the mechanics "oh heres another one" this says to me that the checks are not being done on there production line at honda and i would say someones butt would be in the sling as i am sure honda would be aware of it ,anyway some good ideas but you wont have to worry anymore as now you will put it on at the correct torque ,i wonder how many goldwings have had this problem it would be interesting to find out globally .
I just did the first oil change on my 2024 Goldwing, I had no problem, it was tight, it came off ok.
I had the same issue twice. Once on my 23 and again on my buddies 23. Could you tell me what Honda is thinking here? We got lucky with an Amsoil wrench that was, ever so slightly too small and a persuader tool, [that would be a small hammer]. It worked I will be getting one of those new wrenches for the future. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. be safe everyone.
I still like the idea I sent you for modifying the cheap style black socket type wrench, but any choice you use that works for you, just be very (very) careful around that shifter boss (manual) just forward of the filter, because it wouldn't take much to cause a major problem if you were to come up against that applying torque with the wrong tool and crack that at the engine case. Honda should have designed that better (shorter). Cheers
I guess I'm not the only one had problems taking off the filter.
Glad to see this video. My 2020 is stuck with 5k miles & I thought the 1st oil change guy put the filter on too tight. Thanks.
There are certain tools I will always pay more for just because of the quality but more importantly that will do the job safely and correctly, without causing additional stress/ problems- just an important point to part with my fellow riders ( as per spec book there is an actual torque limit setting for the oil filter and as such if your attempt exceeds that spec and damage is caused ie cracking of the housing ect your warranty could be void. It is best to get the dealership to remove the first oil filter. I have had many a conversation with Honda on this issue only to be told it is not their issue ( even though they use a pneumatic tool to install the oil filter ) I have seen and heard of many cases where the dealership/ mechanic or the owner has been out of pocket due to damage caused from the removal of this filter. Just a suggestion have the filter removed and replaced prior to first picking up your new pride and joy. Please if possible when you experience this issue ( sadly you will ) send feedback to not only your dealer but also directly to The manufacturer- hopefully they will address the issue and resolve the problem.Awesome Vlog again my friend. Stay safe , Stay upright everyone.
I am hoping to purchase my first GW in October and already decided that prior to taking delivery of the bike I will ask the dealership to break the oil filter loose, just so I don't run into that issue. Then each oil change I do I will use a K&N filter as they have the 17mm welded nut on the end.....problem solved
I have a 2008 wing and have for years used a large pair of channel locks. Don't know if it would work on a newer wing.
What an ordeal… couldn’t get mine off with the Walmart version, but was successful using the Honda OEM wrench.
Mine is a 2021. I got the Honda OEM filter wrench from Wingstuff. The filter definitely seemed like it was overtightened at the first change, but the OEM wrench did work for me, thankfully!
It seems to me that the oil filter being stuck usually is a problem on the first oil change or if you have the oil change done at a shop then change it yourself. I prefer to just change it myself and not have to worry about it
i got the 3 finger tool from harbor freight. it doesnt fit between the filter and the engine case.
Yep, @cruisman you might want to remove that one from the description. It doesn't fit. I have an even more slimline version of that one and it doesn't fit either.
Just did first oil change on my 2024 goldwing. Got a cheap filter wrench at Napa auto parts. Guess I’m a lucky it came right off . Was a little tight but no problem. Everything went smoothly. I did put the wrench on filter the tapped on it to make sure it was all the way on. Didn’t tap to hard though. Why didn’t they make it 5 quarts?
As a professional auto tech, I’ve never not been able to get an oil filter off with a pair of oil filter pliers. Granted some of them are a real bitch. But they come off eventually.
The finger one isn't strong enough to remove the filter on the first oil change if the filter is on tight. I used one and broke the teeth in one of the fingers just trying to get the thing off.
@@KreepnSlayer11 Wow. How did you finally get it loose?
Why do you think it is so hard to remove the factory installed filter? Do they not oil the gasket first? Do they tighten it down to where it's metal on metal? The factory is obviously doing something wrong.
Half a turn past contact...always. Another reason to do as much of your own maintenance as possible.
No such a thing as a simple job!
If would be nice if the oil filter manufacturers made a filter with a nut spot welded to the bottom of the casing, so you could get a wrench or socket on it without having to resort to a cup. Also got my fuel pump changed out today. Top notch service and only took about 1/2 hour.
Several years ago I came across K&N oil filters that have a hex nut welded exactly as you suggest. I had similar trouble removing the oil filter from my Harley where the filter mounts horizontally in front of the forward cylinder. With the nut and a socket on it removal is now easy. One caveat is to only use the nut for filter removal not when installing because there have been instances where too much pressure on the nut could cause the filter to leak oil around the nut.
@@studmuffin8859 I use a K&N filter on my Harley, makes life much easier. However I do use it to put the new filter on as well as it makes easier to get the filter in place and started, after it seats and just give it ¼ turn to nip it up and jobs done.
There is a K&N filter for Goldwings, no more costly than OEM and filtration is just as good
That tool is for Toyota canister oil filters.
It's not a problem if mechanics/people remember that oil filters are only supposed to be tightened finger tight. Don't get a damned gorilla to do your oil and filter change.
@@Jim-nm1en this one came from the factory over-tightened
What's odd is that the Honda service manual specs the oil filter to be installed at 19 ft lbs, so yeah that's pretty tight, I can't get close to that with using my bare hands in that tight space....hmmmm.
