K Michael I totally agree with you. Not being yourself is basically the same as being a very manipulative person. Maybe she's worried about political correctness and not being able to say what she really wants to say. Whatever the reason is, it's still a very strange philosophy.
People don’t usually know who they are. So, be yourself is horrible advice. It’s not helpful. It’s not advice at all. The “self” can be a horrible thing some days, so why encourage me to be that. The “self” is not always kind, polite, self-kind, etc.
When people say be yourself, I think what they mean to say is be authentic. But when you are trying something new, like trying to be kind, or trying to be nice, or trying to be helpful, it does not always feel authentic, but you keep trying… You authentically tried. I think better advice would be, “be who you would most like to be”...”be who you yourself would respect”.

Christina has fans. She just prefers to keep to herself. One time when I was watching a video of her, she said that she hates being filmed by phones. She said it very politely in a kind of "it's not you, it's me" way but it's clear that she doesn't like being treated like a zoo exhibition. This is also reflected in her choice of movies. Christina could be in the spotlight much more than she is but she prefers indie movies, presumably because they give you more creative freedom and less pressure from suits and the media.
