    I encountered this peculiarity (and more) after replacing the old throttle body with a less-old, freshly-cleaned throttle body on my 98 with a 99 motor. I just finished following your instructions; idles right and runs like the masterpiece of German automotive engineering that it is. Many thanks!

      Thank you! I bought this 98 Jetta last spring, along with a nearly identical parts car, as a temporary car during hard times. It became something of a project for me until a person I loaned it to nearly totaled it in a front-end collision. I've been struggling with oddities since last August and it has been difficult to find good Volkswagen info online. This one short video has provided me with more help than nearly anything I have found in the last nine months. Keep up the good work.

      Hi, thank you for watching! I use "brake parts cleaner" to clean the IAC / Idle Stabilizer. I remove the valve and then I spray it with brake cleaner (you can also use MAF cleaner). After it is full with the cleaner, I use a fuel injector tester to "trigger" the valve, so that it opens & closes rapidly. I do this a few times and then install the IAC valve again. I will try to remember to make a video about this... but not sure how soon I will get the chance.

    tanner rubottom The rpm code too low at idle is the result of whatever is causing the idle to be too low (rich mixture, lazy O2, bad MAF, etc). Solve the rich running issue and you will probably solve the rpm code at the same time.

    I was wondering on my 95 Jetta 2.0 aba, two things....
    I have a rather low idle, anywhere from 500 to just under 750,i also for other easons replaced my air filter,and cleaned the maf and the throtlle body, I am wonderring what to do next?
    And also I get A LOT of oil in my intake and, air filter, is this due to a faulty pcv?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  10 лет назад

      stupidrelaoded If you have an idle stabilizer to the right of the intake manifold, cleaning the throttle body will not change anything... since the stabilizer is used to adjust idle, not the throttle body.
      The intake boot has been redesigned a few years after 95. You can install the updated version that has a PCV heater & vacuum hose, that reduce / limit the amount of oil in the intake.
      Go to a wrecking yard and remove the intake boot from a 98 model 2.0 and install on your car.

    Maybe you can help me solve an issue with my mk3 (aba motor) ... bought it for dirt cheap just to flip. And it ran good on my hour drive home but a little cold. Replaced the thermostat and it solved the problem. But the car doesn't want to idle. It won't idle. I will keep dying, also hesitates and jerks when driving. I cleaned out the intake and throttle body (entire intake soaked in oil, including maf) cleaned out the maf and it fixed the issue for about 10 minutes and now it keeps doing the same thing. Any suggestions? Thanks much appreciated.

    • @EXOVCDS

      Motorized throttle body or idle stabilizer next to the intake? Not sure... could be fuel related. There's a TSB that addresses the oil in the intake... install the later style intake tube that has the PCV heater & vacuum hose. If it runs better after cleaning MAF, start with the oil issue.

    Im a bit confused, so the high idle was the result of dirty battery terminals and dirty connections?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 года назад +2

      No.
      The high idle was due to the fact that the ECM was holding the throttle open in the old "learned" position. As the throttle bore gets dirty, the ECM opens the bore more and more to maintain a correct idle. Once the dirt is wiped away, lots of air can get past the throttle... usually the ECM will "relearn" the new idle setting (will lower the idle speed over time as it learns it). A quicker way to "teach" the ECM a new idle speed / stop, is to disconnect the battery, touch the cable clamps together... this wipes the memory of the "old learned throttle position". I usually use a scan tool, but I made this video to show that it can be done without a scan tool.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  10 лет назад +1

      It might take a bit of time to relearn on its own... I'm not sure if there is a specific procedure that needs to be followed after cleaning (Throttle Adaptation) like on VW & Audi engines. Have you already tried to disconnect the battery and doing a capacitive discharge like in this video? I can not guarantee that it will work, or that something goes wrong. The fact that it eventually does come down to 800, tells me that the ECM has control of "whatever device is used to adjust idle" (throttle plate or Idle valve / solenoid).

  • @robcottam2
    @robcottam2 11 лет назад

    This is a great video. i actually took throttle body off my tahoe and cleaned it. didnt move the throttle door much. but now i have 900 at stop light and sometimes when i put it in park it jumps up to 1500-2000 and wont go down. think this will do the trick?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  11 лет назад

      If you cleaned dirt from the throttle bore, you will now have more air flow, which can account for the higher idle. I'm not familiar with the Tahoe Idle Control, but if the throttle is used, then yes, it could help. The capacitive discharge clears "learned / stored" Idle / Throttle positions, the ECM then reverts back to Factory Values. It should relearn on its own, but might take a while.

    • @EXOVCDS

      If it's an electronically controlled throttle body, then the ecm needs to relearn "idle". It is still using the old / dirty idle throttle position... which is now clean and allows more air past the throttle (hence, high idle).
      The quick way for the ecm to relearn the new idle position, is to use a scan tool that can activate the relearn setting.
      The ecm should be able to relearn without a scan tool... just like it learned to adjust / compensate over time for the dirty throttle body. Driving for a day or so "should" give it a chance to relearn.

    I drive a 96 Mk3 (A3) GTI 2.0. After killing the battery one day, the throttle began acting very strange. When depressing the accelerator, there is little or no response for a moment. If I hold it at the same position, after about a second the revs will jump to where they should be. The same happens if I manually press the throttle. Idle is just fine. -- Do you think a capacitive discharge would solve this?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  11 лет назад

      A discharge can't hurt, so give it a try. Be sure to clean the throttle bore first or you might end up with a low idle or stalling at idle. If your throttle body is not motorized (only a cable is attached) the issue is not with the throttle. I have a feeling that this symptom is not a throttle issue... see how the discharge goes and let me know. You will have to enter your radio code if still a stock unit.

      It could be (just like with these older VW's)... that after cleaning the throttle body, the ECM has a hard time relearning Idle Speed Settings. It should be able to do so "over time"... in some case, a scan tool is needed to "force" the relearn process.

    Do u guys ever notice a high idle after replacing a battery or clearing codes on a vehicle with a highflow aftermarket filter? My theory on why that happens is the the car won't start making idle adjustments until hundreds of miles so it goes to a default idle not designed for a high flow filter and that's how u get high idle. Does that theory make sense?

    • @805fpv3
      @805fpv3 3 года назад +1

      yes this theory does make sense , very interesting

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 года назад

      As the throttle body bore gets dirty/ restricts air flow (at idle) the ECU has to open the throttle more to get the correct idle. Once the throttle bore is clean, because the ECU is still using the learned position (of a dirty throttle bore), the idle is higher than it should be, due to the higher air flow. Over time, the ecu should relearn / lower the high idle. The quickest way is with a scan tool or capacitive discharge. Newer vehicles with faster ecu processors can relearn idle speed much quicker.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 лет назад

      If it ran fine before the timing belt job, it should run the same after... if not, double check what you did.
      Depending on how / where the break is... it can affect air flow through the MAF... which can / will affect engine performance. You can block off the PCV where it enters the intake tube (ahead of the throttle) to see if it runs better (remove the pcv hose from the intake tube and block the hole in the intake tube somehow for testing).

      Touching the battery cables together "should" reset the computer... if you still have a high idle, the computer "should" relearn and lower the idle by itself. The buttons in the instrument cluster are used to reset the clock. For the radio, you need to enter a 4 digit pin number when the radio says "Safe". Press am/fm & Scan at the same time until you see 1000, then enter the pin number using the station numbers. If you do not have a pin number for the radio, you will need to contact a VW dealer so that they can give you the pin. They will require the VIN number from the vehicle as well as the Serial number of the radio.

      No... this engine / year of 2.0L ABA does not have an IAC. The ECM adjusts the position of the throttle plate to increase or decrease the engine rpm / idle. 2.0L ABA engine from 1994 to 1997 used an IAC valve... located to the right of the intake manifold above the valve cover.

      Not sure, sorry.
      EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) will lower rpm, not raise it.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 года назад

      Cleaning the throttle body & resetting it, is always a good first step... if it has not been done in a while. P1128 is a problem with the air fuel mixture while the vehicle is being driven / not at idle. Since you have already covered the "prime suspects", the only thing that I can think of, is an air leak into the PCV system / engine crankcase. At idle, there is no vacuum to pull PCV fumes from the crankcase / valve cover (because the pcv hose is attached in front of the throttle body). Once the throttle is opened, vacuum is present at the pcv hose that is attached to the air intake tube. A broken dipstick, bad crankshaft or camshaft seal or valve cover gasket... can let air into the engine, that is then routed into the air intake ahead of the throttle body. Even though some parts are new, you'd still want to confirm correct operation. Fuel pressure & flow rate. O2 sensor heater function & signal frequency... MAF sensor signal / load confirmation: (last paragraph in this link)

      Have you cleaned the throttle body already? Cleaning the throttle body is always the first step. Once clean, let the engine idle for 10 minutes (if you do not have a scan tool to reset the adaptation). If after 10 minutes the engine idle still goes up & down, you can try the battery disconnect method in this video. If the problem is still present after that... you may have a different problem that is causing the up & down idle ( vacuum / air leak, fuel mixture problem, O2 sensor problem etc).
