It is so funny how the wheels of life go round & round. I see all those records on the wall behind them, including Hendrix, and can remember seeing him in Toronto in 69, like it was yesterday. Now I am listening to a couple kids, whose parents probably weren’t born yet, reacting with appreciation and love to the music many of us grew up with. It’s a small world.

I was 18 years old in 1985, standing up (stupidly) in a sunroof singing this with everyone else in the car the night before high school graduation. I cannot hear the song ever without that memory.

This is on the screen at the beginning of The Breakfast Club, and I use that lyric to remind myself not to become a cranky old man. I see people who were hippies shitting all over current music and media and it's so hypocritical. Like, it's ok to not like it, but when I hear "they didn't have our music" I immediately think "that's a cranky old man."
Exacting! Seeing people of the Hippie era bitching at the young just is astounding . I guess every generation rails against the dying of the light but the hypocrisy of trying to stop the young from directing their own music lives. ☮️
@@AP-gb3ehI don't think its necessarily hypocrisy. Plenty of people change as they get older and form new perspectives sometimes. Also, the opinions of every new generation aren't exact equivalents to previous generations. So I think it really depends on what opinions and views are being spit on. Being outraged by long hair isn't exactly the same as being outraged by seeing 6 year olds getting lap dances from 45 year old men dressed like strippers...
To be fair, I think pop music in particular used to be a whole lot better, but there's good stuff being made now.

As a 53 year old man, I can't listen to the warning to "look out you rock and rollers" without a lump forming in my throat. I've loved that song and lived that song (even used it in a college presentation once and often as a writing teacher). Rock and roll songs like Changes foretell and intimate the days of our lives. I know, it's only rock and roll, but... 😉✌️

Gentlemen, two trivia points on this classic Bowie song. First, that was Bowie playing the saxophone on this. Second, a whole new generation was introduced to this song by the use of the quote of the line from this song ("And these children that you spit on as they try to change their world...") in the 1984 John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club.
And then 20 years later, in 2004, it was introduced to another new generation when Shrek 2 came out
1972 graduated high school in 1974 saw an ad in Detroit free press Bowie tickets $15.00 got 10, me and my friends were in the 3rd row of a fancy theater in downtown Detroit, Bowie came out over top of the audience on a crane above our heads, hands down best concert I've ever seen!😊 Gary

Why? The music is still here to listen to, and tons of amazing music has been released since then. I listened to this as a young teen too--30 years after it came out, alongside the contemporary music of the time that I loved too. Music is timeless.
Also I feel sorry for anyone who thinks amazing music isn't still being released just because you gave up looking a long time ago.
The albums Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, and Aladdin Same came out in less than 3 years. All epic albums.

'Kooks' is one of my favourites, a love song to his son. It has some glorious lines.
David Bowie is my absolute hero but he's made the odd dud track. Shake it on let's dance is pretty crap and his cover of God only knows on the Tonight album is possibly the worst song he's ever done. The guy was a genius but surely you can't like every song he's put out? If so fair enough. Everyone is different and entitled to there opinion.

It's about time! This was the song that started his fantastic 50 plus year career. He was an unknown, until "Changes." This is one of my favorite songs , of any artist. It's got everything. Music, the lyrics, and a message.
Bowie was far from "unknown" when this song was first released, it's just that this album did poorly. Space Oddity was 3 years before this and even then Hunky Dory only gained recognition after "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars" was so successful the following year. Maybe you're thinking of 1975 when Space Oddity and Changes were re-released as the A and B sides respectively of Bowie's first #1 hit?

If you are ever in a mood to do a trilogy of Bowie songs that are all connected by a common theme... or character. Look into these three in this order...
Space Oddity telling the story of Major Tom and represents Bowies first commercial success.
Then Ashes to Ashes in which we find out some unsettling truths about Major Tom which Bowie recorded nearly a decade after Space Oddity.
And finally one of the very last recordings Bowie made before he died, Blackstar in which we learn the fate of Major Tom. You need to watch the official video however because Major Tom is only shown visually and not mentioned in the lyrics.

Always loved this. Hunky Dory was released when I was a freshman in HS. Changes wasn't a hit until a few years later when Ziggy Stardust became popular and the single was re-released. But it fits in really well with the more mature material he was releasing later in his career...

Proof that when A&A are dialed in, like here, they're the coolest time travelers and bringing the best of the rock era to their contemporaries (and people who witnessed it).
I never get tired of any of Bowie's music. This was one that I used to blast at home while cleaning. My teenage daughter, who hated everything, loved this song.
His loss was one of the greatest in modern times. He was a true artist and entertainer without any pretentiousness.
David Bowie was and still is one of my favorite artists. All his different styles were amazing. Check him out with Bing Crosby singing Little Drummer Boy.
I won this album at a High School Fair in 1973 and was a Bowie fan for life. "Bewley Brothers" from this album is one of the "sleepers" that will surprise you! Bowie on sax!
I'm a massive Bowie fan, and I would say that this is my all time favorite song by him. The lyrics...my goodness they lyrics...just SO thoughtful and thought provoking. S Tier all the way.

I definitely see how you could hear the Bob Dylan-thing in Bowie's vocals--however, his early vocal model was a guy named Anthony Newley, a British Broadway-guy with a unique dramatic vocal style. In Bowie's earlier albums (like this one) he sounds very much like him.
Im a long time bowie fan but recently in the last fast few years i "discovered" a couple tunes i didn't know...stay and width of a circle. Im 57 and still exploring new old music.

This is a Top 10 song of the rock era for me. Absolutely perfect.
I love watching these guys discover the music that moved me when I was their age. These are the best songs of that era, and while they stand the test of time, they should be viewed in the context of when they were written. Bowie’s “Changes” spoke to what we’d experienced through the rapid social and political upheaval of the 60s and helped to mellow my heart during that heartbreaking time.

Ahhhh. One of my all time favorites. Maybe in the top 10 or 20. I have heard this song a thousand times. Maybe more. I was 20 when I first heard it. I love the bass/ progression in the chorus. I love the intro and outro. I love the unexpected changes . I love the message.

As I said when Bowie died.....he was always pushing the envelope....I didn't always appreciate what he was doing at the time...but I always respected him for going to places that made me joyful, uncomfortable , awed and inspired! We lost a musical genius!

OGWT is a legendary UK music programme,huge in the 70’s and are in possession of some of the very best live performances from massive bands and artists.
As a teenager,I got into many a band in those magical days because of seeing them on Whistle Test.

Even in the 90’s it was Bowie who in my youth made me feel it was ok to be weird and misunderstood and he still makes me feel that way.
I love Bowie and I love this song. He was a top tier, class act all the way. Forever reinventing himself, you never knew what the new album was going to bring but you did know it would be a masterpiece. Bowie does play the sax though I don't think he does on his albums but so many of his great songs will have that sax creep in at just the right moment and that is my aha moment when I remember oh yeah, he is a sax player.

My favorite Bowie song is "Heroes", but this is my second favorite.
I'm sure it is highly relatable to many people, like me, who have been through a bunch of stuff that falls into the category of "only happens to other people, not me".

I’ve seen Bowie from Ziggy on, every tour in NYC plus the Glass Spiders tour in NJ. Plus on Broadway in the Elephant Man. Saw him at the opening of an after hours club (Continental in midtown); and at a few other clubs in NY. He lived a few blocks from where I worked in SoHo and I knew he frequented a specialty food store, Dean and DeLuca, which I went to daily (to and from subway to work/work to subway) but never was lucky to see him though I saw so many other notable folks.
A college buddy would see him occasionally in Woodstock after he bought a house nearby that town.
I get sad every time I think of him. He’s given me so much joy. I miss him.
