Rolling Stone rated him #61 their top 100 drummers list. Maybe millennials and Gen Z fans don't give him enough credit, or know who he is, but Blondie sold millions of records, and he's played with everyone from Bob Dylan to Joan Jett, Eurythmics and many others.
I went to school with Clem (Bayonne High class of '72). He mentions his first band, Total Environment, and we actually came up with that name in freshman science class. The band that followed was called Sweet Willie's Jam Band. Not long after he disappeared to NY and the rest is history. He was always a great guy and fantastic/passionate drummer. Just saw Blondie's show a couple of weeks ago in Atlantic City (X opened for them). If they tour in your area, definitely check them out.
I've admired Clem Burke for many years, one of the all time greatest drummers, he doesn't get enough credit for his ability in my opinion, so tight and beautifully executed drumming.
Great interview! I like hearing about all of those times. I had stacks of Rock Scene magazines! You know Clem is not just a great drummer, he’s one of the most together, responsible guys I’ve ever met which accounts for him seamlessly fitting into other great bands through the years.
Plastic Letters was my first introduction to Blondie. I’ve been in love with Debbie ever since. I recently started to listen to their catalog again. Clem is all I hear now. Absolutely brilliant and insanely talented drummer.
One of the most underrated drummers IMHO......"Dreaming " is still one of the best "drum: songs!...could listen to it all day and that says a lot.....I sincerely think his drumming has helped Blondie become the group it has become....
I don't understand these under appreciated remarks about Clem Burke. He's widely acknowledged as one of he best drummers of all rock and roll history, Rolling Stone rated him #61 on their top 100 drummers list, and he's played with the Eurhythmics, Bob Dylan, Joan Jett (all of whom certainly appreciated him), and Blondie sold millions of records. Millions. He's been acknowledged as a drum god for decades, literally, decades.
He was always my favorite member of Blondie, along with Jimmy Destri. I think it'd be cool if Clem, Jimmy and Frankie got together for a project for old time's sake-now that would be rockin'!
I met Clem a few years ago in LA at the NAMM Show in Anaheim and had him sign my " Legends of the Groove" Signature Cymbal as he is part of the history of music with Blondie. The purpose of the Signature Cymbal is educational showing a wide variety of drummers, percussionists and drum educators in all genres of music over the past Century. The collective Discography of these drummers represent an enormous recorded history and accounting of the worlds of music. Presently , there are nearly 150 drummers who have Signed on to the Legends of the Groove Signature Cymbal. Clem Burke's signature was a welcome addition to this musical history.
Best drummer of his era. Blondie and Dramarama. I’ve seen interviews where he’s a little full of himself but I’ll give him a pass just because he’s the best.
Eurythmics are one of my favourite bands, "When Tomorrow Comes" love that song in particular. Wow thanks for that, gonna check out Clem's drumming there. 😀👍
No like most drummers he takes energy shots before going on stage it looks like he has just come off stage in the interview so he must be pumping still. Blondie do not allow drugs in the band no more all are healthy. Its not a wig its the same haircut liam Gallagher and Paul Weller has but his is messed up after coming of stage. One of the best drummers ever if not the best.
I'm surprised at comments about Clem Burke being "under appreciated" Rolling Stone rartes him #61 on their top 100 list of drummers; Blondie the band sold millions of records, Heart of Glass was #1 on the charts, and he's played with such musicians as Bob Dylan, Eurythmics, Joan Jett....who exactly is under appreciating him?
Best Drummer ever!!!! Doesn't get enough Credit!!!!!!
Absolutely agree 100%
Definitely one of the best 2-4, hard-hitting pop drummers ever

sigh. only one of the most famous drummers of the era. Yes, Ringo Starr might be better known.
Great interview! I like hearing about all of those times. I had stacks of Rock Scene magazines! You know Clem is not just a great drummer, he’s one of the most together, responsible guys I’ve ever met which accounts for him seamlessly fitting into other great bands through the years.

Brilliant album bud

I agree...without his tight drumming, Blondie would've sounded amateurish.
If all he ever did was his drumming in "Dreaming", that alone ought to be enough for a lifetime achievement award. Yes, it is THAT good folks. Epic.
Too right re Clem's drumming on Dreaming. Blown away by his animalistic energy there, best drumming I have ever seen, hands down!
Dude is a kick ass drummer. Waaay under appreciated. Love his drum work on Blondie's "Dreaming".

As someone curently learning to Drum, I love Clem's style with 16ths on the Hat, so prominent in the Blondie tracks. Drum Hero!
Love this guy on "Dreaming" with Blonde
Clem is criminally underappreciated and underrated for his skills. He made Blondie IMO.
He was always my favorite member of Blondie, along with Jimmy Destri. I think it'd be cool if Clem, Jimmy and Frankie got together for a project for old time's sake-now that would be rockin'!
Frank infante was the punk and had the look clem burke great style...all got overlooked because of deborah
Clem Burke's incredible knowledge of the " Rock Scene." I'm stupefied.
Thanks for everything Clem! Thanks for posting this Rock Scene Magazine
Great drummer!one of my hero's
Clems the best fucking drummer ever!!!!!!!

Great drummer.
Clem Burke, one of the Best Drummer's I've ever seen. ...He must've burned up thousands of calories every time he played!
certainly not #61 -that is insane - has to be in top 20 - thanks to Clem for being the guy behind the comeback of Blondie and their web success
Sincere.
He is one Cool guy!!
What a guy what a drummer
wicked drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just 'discovered' him really. Very Cool Dude, some of that drumming is mind-blowing.
Wow, this is great. Thank you so much!
Fantastic drummer, does not get the kudos he is deserved
Oh , he does ha ha

He was also the drummer of Eurythmics, listen to "When Tomorrow Comes"! Grrreat!!!
And Eurythmic's Thorn In My Side.
Eurythmics are one of my favourite bands, "When Tomorrow Comes" love that song in particular. Wow thanks for that, gonna check out Clem's drumming there. 😀👍

Wow... How many times does he touch his face or the side of his head during this interview?
Wow, yet another very insightful and deep question. Cool.
He's sweating it looks hot where he was.
Perhaps if you're that interested, you could check for your own lazy self...
Uh, why didn't Clem mention Danny Fields when discussing 'Rock Scene?'
How much do you think his wig cost?
Wow, such a deep and insightful question posed. Let us all ponder on such profundity.
That's his real hair.
I want to do a duet with Stevie!
Not my cup of tea as a drummer! But none the less he was power house drummer just didn't like his sound much?
