      It didnt work under MS-DOS.
      Although, it could... it had it's own engine, maybe some games worked, because some of the 3dfx Glide worked. But it was very rare to use 3d cards under DOS. Almost non-existing.
      It was used under Windows 95.
      It arrived in late 1996, so everyone was using Windows 95 already.
      But nice try for a joke.
      It required DirectX for Direct3d application and for that, you need Windows 95/98
      But... as it had own Matrox 3d engine, it could (not sure) work under DOS, because 3dfx and Glide worked in some very rare expections under DOS. But it's only my speculation, I dont have it confired, maybe it didnt work under DOS in any case.
      Not sure about ATI CIF.

    Also, that segment at the beginning showing games, judging by the texture filtering being present I'd say that's definitely NOT running on the Mystique. :)

    I had all the Matrox cards and Rainbow Runners from the late '90s/early 2000s. The original Rainbow Runner was terrible -- PC-VCR Remote couldn't capture MJPEG video without dropping frames and skipping all over the place. Thankfully Matrox included that MediaStudio software as well and that worked much better. I remember the later Rainbow Runner G-Series (which was a separate PCI card, not a daughter card) also was much more stable.

      I contacted Matrox directly and asked some years ago.
      The lady told me they actually got many such requests for the clown poster. But they didn't have any left.
      What is it about the image of that creepy clown on the box of the video card that makes it so interesting to me. I'm not sure. But it sure is eye catching.

    Matrox trolled us with that trash pseudo 3d accelerator ... no filtering etc ... games looked like trash. It was more of the perfect 2D GPU... I bought a Voodoo 1 half a year later... it was like another galaxy of gaming with 3dfx :D

    • @warrax111
      @warrax111 2 года назад

      Yes, but thank to missing bilinear filtering, it was actually fastest. :D Just pixels remained like in software mode.

    • @warrax111
      @warrax111 4 месяца назад

      no, it WAS 3d accelerator.
      main purpouse of 3d accelerator was to accelerate 3d scene, so it can run faster, and thus, higher resolutions and hi-color mode (16-bit color mode aka 65k colors) remains playable.
      It was also designed to unload CPU, and take part of calculations on itself. So frames can be rendered faster.
      Matrox fullfilled all of this. It was actually fastest 3d accelerator, until 3dfx voodoo appeared.
      It completly wrecked S3 Virge and Ati Rage, in 3d computing power.
