Great set up, however you could take it to the next level by adding some pea gravel to the top of your biofilter and planting out. You could even grow lettuce, celery, herbs, impatiens, papyrus grass, water iris etc.
What do you do with the open top of the planter box? Doing something similar and brainstorming ideas for the plsnter box cover/ how to add plants on top and still be able to access filter
Hi Cole, I have had this filter for year and a half. I am making a bog filter now. Similar look, however water flows from bottom and travel up before going back to the pond. This filter design required biweekly sponge cleaning with increase in pond fish. Bog filter will be more efficient and requires less maintenance. Just my feedback mate
@@Fishaholic nice and agreed. I still want to use the planter box around the filter either way but not sure how to cover the planter box as mine will only be waist high and don't want the filter seen from the top. Did you leave the top of the planter box open as in the video?
@@Fishaholic gotcha. Like I said my planter will be at waist level, pond is in ground, so I'm think I'm gonna try to fit some sort of indented top/lid to act as a container and add soil and plants on top to look like a legit planter box. Then I gotta figure out how to drain said plants so soil doesn't overflow into pond with rain🤔 so much planning lol. Bought a house last year with existing pond, waterfall leaks all over the place and after a year of patching I've torn down the waterfall and now rebuilding on opposite end of small pond
Hello. First of all what a great video you have. Can I ask what did you use as a filter spillway and did you paint it with pond paint (black) or did you apply pond liner on it? Lastly, how did you seal the spillway to the plant box please? Thank you for your lovely video. Hoping to hear from you.
Hi Ren, I have used a storage container for the spillway and used Krylon fusion spray paint in black colour. I have used ideal seal ms290 for sealing the spillway to the plastic planter box. Sealant was leftover from affixing glass to the epdm pond liner. Almost 1 year has passed with no leaks.
I have placed the pump on its side, strainer part facing up elevating it at the same height as I would have placed it on top of a brick. It should address the issue you have mentioned Ryan.
That method works well if it is a bog filter and you follow the steps of adding rocks and pebbles. Have a drain hole so filter can be clean by rinsing with pond water as sediment will be trapped at the bottom of filter. I hope it make sense
Hi Abe, I don't remember exactly. It should be in one of the pond video descriptions. However, it's roughly 87 inches in length, 47 inches I width, and 47 inches in height. Overall, it's not a massive pond due to space constraints in my backyard.

Pretty little filter just wouldn’t of wasted my money on matrix biggest rip-off in the hobby it’s just pumice stone. Seachem swear it’s not. But I have the two side by side and I can’t tell the difference
Yea I know but found these on special. I am thinking of converting the filter into a bog filter and growing some herbs for added filtration. Appreciate your feedback, thank you
I grow house plants over my aquarium to remove nutrients it took a little while for them to get established but now they’ve taken off their growing so fast unlike any House plants. I’ve ever had and I’ve got zero nitrate all of the time
I have pothos peace lily monstera three different kinds. And a few other plants I think it’s great I want a completely new dimension to the aquarium and is also extremely beneficial especially when using it as I do in a overhead sump bog filter set up. I have a canister filter feeding it with an overflow back into the tank which means no detritus builds up in there because it’s prefiltered and I use expanded clay pebbles which act as a very efficient biological media and the plants love to grow in it. Apart from cleaning the canister filter which I would have to do anyway there’s no added maintenance it just looks great and serves the purpose also improves the air quality in the house so it’s a win-win all round
I've seen alot of the filters videos on RUclips and I have to say this one probably my favorite one but for sure in the top 3.💯👍✌️
Thank you Mark, so far it is doing a good job in keeping water clean. Hopefully pond and filter will have some established bacteria in coming weeks.
Super cool dude like how you built the box around it….it made a great waterfall and love the light mount too😀😀👍👍
Thanks Gents, took quite a bit of time building this filter but am happy with the end product
That's brilliant, nice bit of power in the waterfall plenty of oxygen.
Thanks Heap, will add some more fish once filter and pond is established.
@@Fishaholic nice, this whole thing as been one of my favourite projects of yours.
Thanks mate
Nice job with an easy to clean filter system… Well done 👍

I covered the top with 8mm thick plastic sheet, was able to find the right size.

That sounds like a great plan. Fixing the pond and building a nice planter box should add value to the house. Congratulations
I made a bathing tub in my greenhouse. Maybe this kind of filter would keep the water clear?
It should do, adjust your bio media and mechanical media according to the pond requirements. Adding live plants would definitely help with clear water
Your pond is very clean. I want to make this filter too
Thank you heaps
Great idea mate
Thank you heaps
Have you got a materials list? I fancy having a go at building one of these 👍🏻
I’m new to all this, all the various layers of material you put in, how often does this need changing?
The filter pads are rinsed once a week. I replace them after few months which usually depends on how dirty they are

good idea

Do you have a uv light as well?
Hello, nice idea. Roughly how much did it all cost to make?
The whole pond cost me a fortune, I believe somewhere around $AUD 4,500, major contributors were cost of timber, liner and glass
U should put a brick in the pond for the water pump ,if anything happen like leaking at least the water would not be drain out completely
I have placed the pump on its side, strainer part facing up elevating it at the same height as I would have placed it on top of a brick. It should address the issue you have mentioned Ryan.
is that a white guppy? coz I also have one
Why did you paint the spillway? Hopefully nontoxic paint, looks can kill.
This spray paint is aquarium safe. I painted it black, so spillway blends in with the rest of the filter
Want to make one for my pond
It has been doing a good job so far, hopefully it lasts long.
Watched another filter build were water enters at the bottom of filter and leaves at the top because sediment doesn’t rise.??
That method works well if it is a bog filter and you follow the steps of adding rocks and pebbles. Have a drain hole so filter can be clean by rinsing with pond water as sediment will be trapped at the bottom of filter. I hope it make sense
bog filters work well if you want to place plants on the top. the plants get to enjoy the nutrients in the sediment.
What is the size of your pond sir? By inches maybe?

Can you send me the link to buy the products you used for the pond filter please 😊
Thx
Products were bought from various places, and the majority of the goods used were purchased in person from the store.
@@Fishaholic What was it that you patched the drain holes with?
@1DanielleLouise I have used idealseal ms290, great product. I have used it to attach glass window to the pond.
@@Fishaholic thanks!
What type of silicone you use?
