    I was a 'kernel hacker' backer. They double sent me my final reward. Wound up with 2 pocket chips, 2 chips, 2 vga and hdmi boards. I left one set sealed in box. Also have an alpha and a beta version of the chip. It's pretty neat. I've used to program Arduinos. Also has come in handy as a pocket terminal that is a bit more user friendly than a phone app IMHO.

      @OpenTechLab  7 лет назад +5

      Didn't know you could do that. Thanks for the tip. There's some info here: bit.ly/2mGxFSK
      Unless I missed something, this isn't explained in the official docs, right?

    • @heyarno
      @heyarno 7 лет назад +2

      Oh, I referred to to one of the first grey welcome screens you skipped through. There was something that looked like a picture manual, on how to calibrate the touch input. I'm re-watching the video now to give you a time mark.

    • @heyarno
      @heyarno 7 лет назад +3

      Ok, I remembered seeing the screen from 18:14 when I commented. It's not what I thought. But a quick search shows a rudimentary method of calibration www.chip-community.org/index.php/Calibrate_Touchscreen

    • @Dessimat0r
      @Dessimat0r 7 лет назад +1

      Isn't it also a resistive screen? In which case, use a better stylus (like the type a 3DS might use, etc).

    • @WorldInThe
      @WorldInThe 6 лет назад

      I was thinking this aswell. Since it's resistive that would be a big reason he was having the issues he was having. Even a mechanical pencil with the lead retracted would work better than the stylus he was using.

  • @Datan0de
    @Datan0de 7 лет назад

    Hands-down, this is the best video I've seen about the CHIP and PocketCHIP! Tons of great info here. Now I want to pick up a GPS receiver and duplicate what you've done here with my own PocketCHIP.
    Two questions: Did you ever find a workaround that allows you to boot the PocketCHIP with the GPS connected? If so, would it be possible to permanently connect the GPS to the internal solder pads and fit everything inside the case?

  • @EdwinFairchild
    @EdwinFairchild 7 лет назад +4

    you can get a Wireless USB keyboard Mouse Combo and it will only use one USB port for the receiver , hence no need for a hub

    • @UNSCPILOT
      @UNSCPILOT 5 лет назад

      Unless you also want a flash drive or other device linked up, but cheap simple hubs are a dime a dozen so not a huge deal.
      That said it makes me wanna put my Pi 3 or Pi 0 to work, kinda impulse bought them without a plan XD

    That's the most odd Colorado accent I have ever heard. However, I got most of the words. But, seriously, folks. this is an excellent presentation. However, as with all presentations of the "$9 Computer", it quickly becomes obvious that by the time you get enough stuff to make it work, you are at about 3 times the price of a Raspberry Pi 3 which is at least 4 times faster than this dog. I won't be buying one but have learned a lot from this presentation. Thanks a lot for preparing it. Made it all the way through!

    Chip - a $9 Mini-Computer which has USB port and Headphone Jack.
    iPhone 7 - a $649 Smartphone which has Lightning port.
    So, at less than 1/65th of the price, the Chip still has a Headphone Jack, and can basically do the exact same things as the iPhone.
    That iPhone sure seems like great value.

      Tomas Maliauka Consider getting a RaspberryPi 3 kit. There are different levels of kits for different levels of skill, cost, and ambition. I've been using mine to learn Python, but it has become my main computer - especially after my Windoze desktop died. The RaspberryPi marketing aims for kids and school projects, but don't let that turn you off. With a fast microSD card, it is a fully functional and usable everyday computer.
      The Raspbian operating system comes with a full set of LibreOffice software, several programming languages, browser, Mathmatica, and games. Other operating systems are available if you would prefer those as well. Learning Linux is a matter of reading, searching, reading or watching some more, and trying things out.
      I suspect I will be learning a lot more Python and Linux over the coming months. I've already written an snp file to SPICE model converter to use in my engineering work, as well as an LFSR counter designer in Python.
      How much you can learn is up to how much effort you put in! Good luck!
      Cynthia

    • @OpenTechLab
      @OpenTechLab  7 лет назад

      It's Isopropyl Alcohol a.k.a. IPA. You can get it bottled or as a spray.
      The result wasn't perfect - the CHIP has matt-black solder-resist, and the sticker seems somewhat metalic, so I think I ended up with small amounts of conductive debris ingrained into the solder-resist. Fortunately it didn't seem to break anything.

    I have to say, putting a wallpaper on the desktop and also using XFCE (which is definitely not that lightweight but I guess if you compare it to GNOME or KDE then yes, it is) is a very peculiar choice for such a device. I would have done a minimal LXDE install (if the goal is a more traditional desktop look and feel) with 99% of the software I see in this video completely gone and (of course) no wallpaper.

      Unfortunately not - it's a completely different thing. I would love it if there were a standard for such things - but unfortunately every type of device: Arduino, RPi, RPi Zero, BeagleBone, Papillio Board, etc. they all have their own kinds of Shields/Hats/Wings etc. which are not compatible.

    It isn't really like a supercomputer. It doesn't even have the IO bandwidth of a high end "mini" computer! In the 70s it would have been an expensive co-processor, but it would have really sucked for the things supercomputers were doing. Don't get confused by clock speeds. To actually make it as powerful as a supercomputer from when you were a baby it would have to cost many thousands of dollars even today.

      It's gone up a lot since then. I've even got Patreons now! It's not making me rich, but I'm having doing it, and getting a few sheckles to help buy supplies is really nice.

    Don't give the pocket chip company your information, they are thieves. I bought one it's been over 9 months and I still have not revived anything. I have not been refunded my money either. I call and write and the company blows me off, saying one excuse after another.
