  • How to fix the top 5 head construction drawing mistakes: www.thedrawing...
In this session I go over some tips and techniques for drawing Goblins. Covering the basics of Structure, Gesture, and Adding Detail.
These are the basic ideas that underpin the drawings I do all day every day.
It's easy to get discouraged with structural drawing and learning the fundamentals. In the beginning these concepts seem very technical.. but it's critical to understand that you get better as you practice and that they unlock a lot of creative potential.
The more you practice in a technical manner the less technical you need to be in your day to day drawing.
I recommend a small but steady percentage of your time as an artist be spent studying the craft.... 15-20% in the beginning. Fold these techniques into your normal everyday drawing bit by bit. And keep the focus always on drawing fun stuff you enjoy.
    Happy Drawing!

I’m an art student currently studying in Adelaide. Was introduced to your channel by my lecturer and I’ve been watching your videos for a few days now. These are some of the most valuable and practical drawing videos I’ve ever seen, it’s insane to me that this is free. Please keep up the good work, this content is invaluable.

Nice stuff!! Would your course work for a beginner? Feels like I lack a kind of road map or process past the sketching phase

Thanks! The Lines And Colour Academy course can work for a beginner for sure. But it doesn’t place a lot of focus on basic drawing skills. Instead it focuses on building a ritual and mastering simple reliable processes for creating illustrations etc. so its less useful if you are after simple beginner how to draw tutorials (I have a lot of that planned in future courses but nothing is available at the moment). It’s designed to get you creating art on a regular basis in the beginning. I hope that answers your question!

@@TheDrawingCodex nice! Yea mostly looking for the right mindset when creating and maintaining a habit whether it's beginning drawing drills or anything else aswell as how the process is digitally. The course looks very very good and the price is a killer

I love this video style. Though lenghty I think that's also the strength. The format is simple and honest. It shows that drawing is a skill that takes time to develop but you also explain very well what you're doing and why.

    Hello! awesome video as always!
I'm sorry to make it to you but, I have a question about materials. In the older videos you used to use HI-UNI pencils (what hardness?) and now you've apparently switched completely to the Blackwings.
Living here in Brazil both are pretty difficult to get, but I live the Uni 4B graphite that I use in my 2.0mm lead holder. I'm in the market for a more expensive pencil. How would you say the two of them compare and why did you switch from one to the other (if you in fact did)?
Thank you for all the videos!
PS: BTW why did you rename part of the courses from "The Drawing Codex" to "Line and Color Artisan"?

    • @TheDrawingCodex
      @TheDrawingCodex  2 года назад +2

Yeah I have mostly switched to the Blackwing Matte (black one) for the demos and drawing lessons here. It's honestly mostly because it gives such a dark line... it makes it easier for the camera to see. I have gotten quite used to the blackwing though and I really like the smoothness of it and the ability to get a nice line with such low pressure of the hand.
I was using the HI-UNI because it was a bit bigger (that one was actually a Uni Penmanship Writing Pencil - Triangular Body - 4B I think) and it was easier to get nice thick lines the camera would pick up.
For my sketching when I am not recording I have gotten used to the Matte Blackwing (the back one, which is the darkest lead). So I normally just grab that. I find sometimes the Grey 602 Blackwing can work better depending on the paper as it is a bit harder.
The Pencils I normally go to over the years have been the Tombow Mono 100, The Blackwings, Or the Mitsubishi HI-UNI (all wooden pencils). There are probably other brands that are just as good but those are the ones I have used.
I also spent a lot of time drawing with a .5 mechanical pencil with B lead! But this smaller lighter line does not show up well in these demos, so I don't use it much.
The bottom line is that the Blackwings are just very nice and smooth... They do seem to have something about them that makes them smoother and nicer.... hard to explain :) But ultimately the best tool is the one you know, so if you have something that works for you don't feel like something new and more expensive will be much better! It's certainly fun to play with different pencils and see what they do. I find that different tools do tend to bring out different lines and feelings somewhat.
The naming of the courses is mostly redundant at the moment. I have a lot of things planned for the site and many courses I want to build over the next few years. In the end there will be courses that focus on mastering the line and color style (Like and Color Artisan). Ones that focus on drawing fundamentals. And I will also have some that focus on comics which will come under a different section called 'Sequential Artisan'. So in the end it will be a way to differentiate the separate parts of my site and help explain the courses. But for the moment it's probably confusing! Apologies. :)
At the moment I am mostly just focusing on getting better at making youtube videos though. So the new courses will come later on.
      Thanks for your thoughts Tim!

@@TheDrawingCodex Thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful answer!
The thing about the pencil is just that when its time to go to the art store for need art supplies one starts to think: should I go for something different? Your answer will help me a lot in making my decision. (Buying a pencil shouldn't be such a big fuzz but in Brazil these thing get expansive really quickly due to our under valued currence, heavy taxation on imports and scarcety of art stores and the art market as a whole. So they turn into a kind of luxury item. Regular stores just carry the Bic Evolution and that's that.
I also have sketched with th .5 mechanical pencil my whole life, but I'm finding it gets too tight, little gesture and movement when I use that tool. And then I see Jaw Cooper and other peoples stuff and I think, maybe I'm in need of more freedom with my tools.
Thank you for the explanation of the naming change. I'm looking forward to your drawing fundamentals course. But if that has to wait I'm quite happy with your youtube content.
Some suggestions for videos when you run out of ideas: in the concept art side, taking a brief and developing it explaning your decision making process; on the comics side, getting a script and running dow some options of pannels layout on a page and the advantages, disadvantages of each for that particular case. Vlog like, talking about your learning/job history in more details, showing your work at that time to illustrate progression. And drawing animals and fantasy animals. :) What goes on your head when desiging fantasy animals for your own sketches or other peoples projects.
Just some ideas that could be useful if you think they are interesting.
Thank you once again for the answer, the videos and the drawing codex!
