You need to watch more episodes and videos of Shark Tank especially when Barbara is on the panel.. The Quality of deals made trumps Quantity of deals made.
At the end of the day when you come to someone asking for money that person is able to say what he wants in return, it is then your decision wether you want that deal or not. Fair is fair to me.
It's kind of a bad deal for the entreprenuers. Basically Barbara gives them a loan for and still gets 22%. You could say Bababra is getting 22% for free.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but for my understanding of the royalty system: It really doesn't matter how much of a royalty the Sharks are asking for because no matter what, it simply is to pay back what they invested. If one Shark wants a $10 royalty and the other wants a $5 royalty, the only difference it makes is how long it takes for that Shark to get their money back. Obviously, a $5 royalty would take longer to earn back vs a $10 royalty, but in the end it ends when the total amount is reached so it's not like the company will be losing out longterm. Anyone have insight?
To further clarify, considering Barbara asked for a $10 royalty and decided to drop it down to a $5 royalty which sparked the deal to be made, she technically didn't offer anything different to the company. The only difference is it will take her longer to earn her $100,000 back since the new royalty was for the same $100,000. Obviously there is a risk factor if the product doesn't sell $100,000 worth of revenue, but I don't think that is a concern for the Sharks. So in my eyes, Barbara didn't even technically offer anything different in her second offer and it was a game changer for the two to make the deal. Am I missing something?
Hi, @jtd978, The way I look at it is that : Let's suppose your product costs 30 Dollars and you're selling x amount of those products in a day/week/month or so, Having to pay a fixed sum of royalty per product, makes you have lesser cash to spend/re-invest in business at the end of day/week/month. In this case, if you're paying a 10Dollars royalty for every product you sell, you basically ending up with 66.66% of the revenue (Example taken only for understanding, Actual royalty is quite low) which isn't preferable for you at all. As a businessman or the owner who is just starting their entrepreneurial game, I feel it is better for them to have more cash in hand to re-invest rather than paying off to a shark who has countless number of companies under his belt. I might be wrong but this must be the case.
Also the value of money reduces every year due to inflation. If Barbara kept the money in a 0 risk savings account with a minimal interest, it'd still be worth more than it was initially. A $10 royalty paying back her money would mean that she'd recoup her money in a shorter duration than she would've with a $5 royalty. So you could say that the real value of her money would lower in both scenarios. Looking at this from the firm's perspective, the real value of mey they'd have to pay back Barbara if they owed her a $10 royalty would be higher than the real value of money they'd be paying her with a $5 royalty.
You're exactly correct about the royalty in this situation. No insight is needed. The issue is she gets 22% of the company as well after she gets her money back. 100,000 will be paid back fast but that 22% they gave up will make it a slow profit for them if it's successful. So, say the first year they make 500,000 in sales. Barbara will get 100,000 from that and 22%. So she gets 210,000 and they get 290,000. She not only got paid back but got a hefty profit. Sales will slow down after the first year, and she still gets almost a 1/4 of the sales ever year. So, if they are lucky enough to keep product interest and have yearly sales of 100,000 they only get 78k a year and you can make that working a 9-5 vs the stress and 24/7 hours of running a business. Meanwhile, Barbara has done well and everything else to her is found money with very little to do with the company.
Barbara: I love your product. I think you're fantastic, your business is phenomenal, and your valuation is perfect. I've been waiting for years for someone like you to come into the tank; in fact, I dare say you are the single greatest entrepreneur we've ever seen, with the greatest business we've ever seen. This product will change hundreds of millions of lives for the better, and generate hundreds of billions in revenue. I think you're beautiful, and I love you. For those reasons, I'm out.
Rivalries in the Shark Tank always makes it a bit more interesting. It seems that Barbara's rivalry with Kevin is the most heated in the tank, though I've seen a few others gnaw at each other. Which other Sharks have an entertaining rivalry on this show?
It’s not for free at all when your money is tied up in a investment that has risk. When it could be tied up in a different investment with return and very low risk.
It's almost like if you can somehow pull off getting sharks to get involve in an ego fight with each others. You always get a deal, and a good one too.
With ABC, get either the pitch, the offers, the counteroffers, or the outcome. And bonus spoiler in the title from time to time so you can just skip to the next video.
I would never ever ever, give away royalty in exchange for funds; you re basically losing liquidity which is the most important thing in an entrepeneurhsip; youll need that money to pay credits, expand the business, etc.
Mr. Wonderful has been one of my faves since he was on Dragon's Den. The Canadian version that Americans got this idea from. Britain has a Dragon's Den as well.
These royalties mean minor investors are going to be taking a bigger payday from the business than the entrepreneurs who need cash flow to grow the business.

But their interviews together and interactions in Instagram is really cute and fun.😂
Yes it would

I think the show would be pretty good without Barbara.

Barbara has such an awesome social media reach. She also relates to them as she has tiktok.

Royalty deals that only returns back 100% is a good deal for the entrepreneur.
Perpetuity deals are absolute bullshit
But she gets 22%
@@FireStormBaller they were already offering 22% for less cash. Barbara offered more cash in order to get some security.

Higher royalties would also significantly impact cashflow in the short term.
